If you want a different partner, avoid the romance choice or choose someone else in New Game+.
What happens when you choose a romance?
The relationship begins when you select the romantic response during the relevant Confidant story. Choose the friendship response instead and you do not start that romance. Push Square’s Persona 5 Royal romance guide says that after entering a relationship, you are committed to that choice for the rest of the playthrough; it identifies no later breakup option.

How can you choose a different partner?
- You have not made the romance choice yet: choose the friendship response in the Confidant story to avoid starting that relationship.
- You are already dating someone: finish the current run and choose differently in New Game+. Push Square says romance choices reset when you start New Game+, letting you pursue another partner in the new run.
Can you date more than one character?
Yes. Dating multiple characters is possible, but it can lead to a Valentine’s Day confrontation. The Japanese Persona 5 Royal strategy wiki describes the confrontation as unavoidable once you have at least two romantic Confidants. This is a relationship consequence, not a game-ending or progress-blocking penalty.
How many romance options are in Royal?
Push Square lists ten romance options for Persona 5 Royal, compared with nine in the original Persona 5. Use a Royal-specific guide if you are checking the available choices: the two versions do not have the same count.

Why do Confidants matter?
Atlus describes Confidants as people Joker builds trust and alliances with; deepening those bonds can broaden and improve Phantom Thief abilities. The official Persona 5 Royal website explains the role of Confidants, while the specific rule about not being able to break up is documented by the romance guide above.
