A Realm is optional: you can join a friend’s world, play over a local network, connect to a multiplayer server, or use split-screen on a supported console. The right option depends on whether you use Java or Bedrock Edition, whether players are nearby or online, and whether the host needs to keep the world available when they are offline.
Which Minecraft multiplayer option should you choose?
| Option | Where it works | Must the host be online? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Join a friend’s world | Bedrock; players need the same edition | Yes. The friend hosting the world must start it. | Occasional online sessions with a friend |
| LAN | Java or Bedrock on devices that support it; players share a local network | Yes. The host opens the world. | Playing together at home or on the same network |
| Online server | Java players join Java servers; Bedrock players use Bedrock servers | Not necessarily. Availability depends on how the server is hosted. | A server-based world for a group |
| Split-screen | Console versions of Bedrock | Players share the console and screen. | Local couch co-op |
| Realm | Java or Bedrock, with separate versions | No. Minecraft describes Realms as private servers that stay online. | A private world friends can access while the owner is offline |
Java and Bedrock are separate multiplayer ecosystems: players generally need to join a world or server running their own edition. A console’s online-play subscription, when required, is separate from a Minecraft Realms subscription.
How do I join a friend’s Minecraft world?
Bedrock: join online
- Make sure you and your friend are Minecraft friends, signed in as required, and using the same current game version.
- Ask your friend to start their world with multiplayer enabled.
- On your device, open Play, choose Friends, and select the host under Joinable Friends.
This option depends on the host being online with the world open. If it does not appear, check multiplayer permissions and account settings; console players may also need the platform’s online service.
Bedrock: play over LAN
- Connect both devices to the same local network.
- On the host’s device, open the world settings and enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Start the world. On the other device, open Play, go to Worlds, and select the LAN world when it appears.
LAN is for players sharing a network, not for joining remotely over the internet. Devices need to support LAN play and use the latest version.

How do I play on a Minecraft server?
Java Edition
From the main menu, select Multiplayer, then choose a saved server or select Direct Connection or Add Server and enter the server address. Use a compatible Java version and connect to a Java server. Minecraft says a Java online server supports two or more players without a Realms subscription (Minecraft Help).
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock has a Servers tab for online play. Online servers connect players over the internet, while LAN servers are for people on the same network. Featured servers and other server options can have their own access rules, so check the server’s instructions before joining.

Can I play Minecraft multiplayer on a console without a Realm?
Yes, but online play on a console may require that console’s separate online subscription. Minecraft lists Xbox Game Pass Core for Xbox, PlayStation Plus for PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Online for Nintendo Switch multiplayer. These platform requirements are not the same as paying for Realms; check Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements for current details.
Console versions of Bedrock also support local split-screen. This is couch co-op on one console and screen, not remote internet multiplayer. Split-screen is available only on console versions, according to Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock comparison.

What can stop you from joining?
- Different editions: Java players need a Java world or server; Bedrock players need Bedrock. Ordinary Minecraft multiplayer does not connect the two editions.
- Version mismatch: Update to the latest release; incompatible versions can prevent a connection.
- Wrong connection type: LAN requires the same local network. Online play requires an internet connection.
- Account or permission settings: Console and mobile players must sign in or link a Microsoft account for multiplayer, and child accounts may need multiplayer enabled in parental settings.
- Console online service: Check the platform subscription requirement if you are playing online on a console.
If you are trying to join a Realm rather than a friend-hosted world or server, ask the Realm owner for an invitation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does a Realm add?
Minecraft describes Realms as personal, private, cloud-hosted servers that stay online, so invited friends can play when the owner is offline. That persistence is the main distinction from simply joining a friend’s open world. An invited friend does not need to buy a Realm subscription to join.
