If your World of Warcraft account has a recurring subscription, cancel it in Battle.net before the next renewal. Open Games & Subscriptions, choose Manage beside the relevant WoW license, and select Cancel Subscription. Blizzard says cancellation stops the next recurring payment, while your existing game time remains usable until its expiration.
If you are using the Modern WoW free trial, there is no recurring subscription charge for the trial itself. The trial allows play through level 20 without a subscription. A charge can still occur if you separately started a paid subscription or added paid game time to the account.

How to stop a World of Warcraft renewal
Cancel the subscription from the Battle.net account that owns the World of Warcraft license. The cancellation control is located in the account-management area rather than inside the game client.
- Sign in to the correct Battle.net account.
- Open Games & Subscriptions.
- Locate the World of Warcraft license you want to change.
- Click Manage.
- Choose Cancel Subscription and complete each confirmation prompt.
- Save the cancellation confirmation, then check the subscription status or transaction history.
Use the renewal date shown in your account as the deadline. A cancellation completed before that renewal is intended to stop the next automatic payment. If a renewal has already entered payment processing, stopping it through the account page may no longer be possible, so contact Blizzard Billing Support promptly.

What a successful cancellation should show
After the prompts are complete, verify that the subscription is no longer scheduled to renew. Keep the confirmation details in case you need to discuss a later transaction with support. Checking transaction history also helps distinguish a canceled subscription from a separate purchase of digital game time.
Why the button may be missing
Blizzard’s support guidance says that a missing Cancel Subscription control generally means either there is no active recurring subscription on that account or the subscription was already canceled. Check that you signed in with the Battle.net account containing the paid WoW license, rather than an account that only has trial access or a different game license.
What cancellation changes—and what it does not
Canceling a recurring plan stops the next renewal; it does not delete time you have already purchased. Blizzard says the account remains playable until the current paid game time expires. Once that time runs out, the account becomes inactive unless you add more game time or start another subscription.

The cancellation therefore affects future billing, not the remainder of the current paid period. You can continue using eligible content during that period, then decide later whether to purchase time again.
Recurring billing intervals
Blizzard describes recurring World of Warcraft plans that renew every month, every three months, every six months, or every twelve months. Each continues automatically until you cancel the subscription or the account. The length of the interval changes how far apart charges occur; it does not change the cancellation path in Battle.net.

Cancellation is different from account closure
Removing a payment method or closing an account is not a substitute for canceling a subscription. Deleting payment details does not automatically reverse a completed charge. Use the subscription controls first, and contact Billing Support if you cannot access them or a payment is already being processed.
Trial, recurring subscription, and prepaid time compared
These three access types are easy to confuse because they can appear under the same Battle.net account. Their billing behavior and playable content are different.

| Access type | Payment and renewal | Playable content | Is cancellation required? | Refund position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modern WoW Free Trial | No subscription is required for the trial; it does not itself create a recurring charge. | Modern World of Warcraft content through level 20. | No recurring plan exists to cancel unless you separately subscribed. | There is no trial subscription payment to refund; any separate paid transaction follows its own policy. |
| Recurring subscription | Automatic renewal monthly, every three months, every six months, or every twelve months until canceled. | World of Warcraft access covered by the active game time and subscription entitlement. | Yes. Cancel from Games & Subscriptions before the next renewal. | Subscriptions are generally non-refundable, with Blizzard’s stated unused-time review for purchases within 14 days and policy exclusions. |
| Prepaid game card or digital game time | Non-recurring; the purchased time is consumed until it expires. | Access provided by the amount and type of game time purchased; Classic versions and selected modes may require game time or a subscription. | No automatic renewal to cancel. | Any refund request is governed by Blizzard’s applicable purchase policy rather than recurring-subscription cancellation. |
The Modern WoW Free Trial is separate from access to every WoW mode. Blizzard’s support information identifies the free trial as limited Modern WoW play through level 20. Classic versions and selected modes require game time or a subscription, so reaching a mode-selection screen that asks for paid time does not mean the trial itself has renewed.
If the renewal is pending or the charge has posted
Payment still processing
When a renewal has entered payment processing, the account cancellation control may not be able to stop that transaction. Contact Blizzard Billing Support immediately with the Battle.net account details and the transaction status. Do not assume that canceling after the fact will automatically void a pending authorization.
Charge already completed
A missed cancellation is not automatically refundable. Blizzard states that World of Warcraft subscriptions are generally non-refundable, but it provides a refund-review process for possible exceptions. Submit the review request as soon as possible and explain that the renewal was unintended.
The 14-day unused-subscription wording
Blizzard’s published refund wording says: We’ll refund any unused World of Warcraft subscription within 14 days of the purchase.
That is a policy condition for an unused subscription, not a guarantee that every renewal request will be approved. The same wording says Blizzard will not refund subscription time lost because of a suspension or permanent account closure.

That stops future renewals; it does not promise a refund for time already lost during the suspension or closure.
What not to do
- Do not delete your payment method expecting a completed charge to disappear.
- Do not close the account as a billing workaround; account closure can affect access and does not create a general refund entitlement.
- Do not assume that an in-game uninstall cancels the Battle.net subscription. The subscription is managed through the account page.
How to identify which billing situation applies
You are playing only the free trial
If you downloaded Modern WoW and can play within the trial limits through level 20 without adding a subscription, the trial itself does not set up recurring billing. Review Games & Subscriptions anyway if you previously subscribed, because a paid license can coexist with trial access on the same account.
You see a future renewal date
A future renewal date indicates an active recurring plan. Use Manage and Cancel Subscription before that date, then confirm the changed status. Your current paid time remains available until its stated expiry.
You bought a game card or digital game time
Prepaid cards and digital game time are non-recurring. There is no subscription renewal to cancel, although the time can expire. If you later start a recurring plan, that separate plan must be canceled through Battle.net.

You see a transaction but no subscription
Check transaction history to determine whether the entry is a recurring renewal, a one-time purchase of digital game time, or another account transaction. A one-time purchase does not create the same cancellation control as an active recurring subscription.
Timing mistakes that cause unwanted charges
Waiting until the renewal day
Blizzard’s instructions focus on canceling before renewal. Because a payment that has begun processing can be difficult to stop, do not wait for the renewal day if you already know you will not continue. The account page’s displayed date is the practical reference for your plan.
Canceling the wrong Battle.net account
People can have more than one Battle.net login or more than one WoW license. A missing cancellation button or an apparently unchanged renewal often results from checking a different account. Sign out, sign back in to the account that owns the subscription, and confirm the license name before changing anything.
Assuming cancellation removes current access
Cancellation is not an immediate lockout. Existing paid time continues until expiration, so seeing playable characters after canceling does not mean the cancellation failed. Verify the renewal status rather than using continued access as the test.
Blizzard’s automatic-payment terms
Blizzard’s End User License Agreement says that choosing a recurring subscription means payments will be processed automatically until the subscription or the account is canceled. This is why an active plan needs an explicit cancellation action. It also explains why a one-time prepaid purchase and a recurring subscription behave differently in the account interface.

- Master the Path of the Monk - Learn the mystic powers of the Monk, World of Warcraft's newest playable class. Destroy foes with the Windwalker's devastating attacks, replenish allies with the Mistweaver's spiritual energies, and shrug off enormous damage with the Brewmaster's unyielding strength.
- Battle to level 90 - Ascend to new heights of power as you explore the verdant reaches of the Jade Forest, war with the terrible Yaungol on Kun-Lai Summit, and unlock the secrets of the Mogu'shan Vaults.
- Unleash the Mighty Pandaren - Set out as a member of the enigmatic Pandaren -- World of Warcraft's first neutral race -- and join the ranks of either the Horde or Alliance as you enter the conflict brewing on Pandaria's shores.
- Discover a Lost Continent - Explore the ancient kingdoms of Pandaria and mount your defense against a newly awakened evil stirring in the continent's dark corners.
The same policy framework does not create a broad refund right for digital purchases. Treat cancellation as a way to prevent the next charge, and use Blizzard’s refund-review process separately if a renewal has already occurred.
A practical checklist
- Identify whether you are on the Modern WoW trial, a recurring subscription, or prepaid game time.
- For a recurring plan, sign in to the correct Battle.net account.
- Open Games & Subscriptions and select Manage for the WoW license.
- Choose Cancel Subscription and finish every prompt.
- Save the confirmation and verify the status or transaction history.
- Continue using remaining paid time until it expires; cancellation does not erase it.
- If a charge is pending or posted, contact Billing Support promptly and submit the refund-review request rather than deleting payment details.
Bottom line for common situations
“Can I cancel before WoW charges me?”
Yes. Cancel the active recurring subscription in Battle.net before its next renewal.
“I am on the trial—will I be billed?”
The Modern WoW trial through level 20 does not require a subscription and does not itself create a recurring charge. Check for a separate paid plan if you have subscribed previously.
