It depends on which resolution you mean. Viewers can change their playback quality, but that does not change the resolution your encoder sends to YouTube. For a broadcaster changing encoder output while already live, YouTube’s public guidance does not say whether the change is seamless or whether the encoder must restart. Test the exact setup privately or unlisted before relying on a midstream change.
Two different resolution controls
Broadcaster: the encoder’s outgoing resolution
Your encoder sends video to YouTube at a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube detects the encoder’s settings by default. You can also select a resolution manually by creating a custom stream key and enabling manual settings under Stream Resolution in YouTube’s Live Control Room. The encoder, together with the stream configuration, determines the incoming feed.
YouTube’s current public encoder guidance does not explain whether changing the encoder’s outgoing resolution during an active broadcast is supported or whether doing so interrupts the live session. Do not assume a change will be seamless. If uninterrupted playback matters, treat an encoder restart as a possible interruption until you have tested your precise encoder, stream-key settings, and workflow.
Viewer: playback quality
A viewer’s quality selection affects playback on their device, not the resolution your encoder sends. YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers across different devices and networks can watch. Which options a viewer sees can depend on processing and playback context.

How to handle an encoder resolution change
- Choose the target settings before going live, if possible. YouTube’s encoder setup connects your encoder to the platform with a stream URL and stream key. Set the intended resolution and frame rate in the encoder before starting the broadcast.
- Decide whether to let YouTube detect settings or select one manually. YouTube recommends automatic detection by default. For manual selection, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room.
- Check current encoder recommendations and your upload capacity. YouTube’s current guidance recommends the following H.264 bitrates for these incoming video settings:

These are YouTube recommendations for incoming encoder video, not a guarantee about switching resolution while live. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, up to 60 fps, with a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds and a maximum of four seconds. Recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; check YouTube’s current settings guidance before configuring a production stream.
- Rehearse the change on a private or unlisted stream. Use the same encoder, stream-key configuration, and procedure you intend to use live. Verify whether the stream remains healthy and what viewers experience when you apply the change.
- For a continuous production, schedule the change or have a recovery plan. The official guidance does not establish a universal restart rule. Avoid promising a seamless transition to viewers until your own test confirms the behavior.
- Watch stream health. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-quality warnings during the rehearsal and production. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend monitoring stream quality.
24/7-specific considerations
Archive the program separately if the full recording matters
Resolution changes and archiving are separate issues, but the duration of a 24/7 stream creates an important archive risk: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete record of the program, arrange a separate local recording rather than relying on the YouTube archive alone.

Match backup encoder settings
If you use primary and backup streams, keep their resolutions matched. Google’s API documentation identifies a resolutionMismatch health condition when the primary and backup streams have different resolutions. This is guidance for failover consistency; it does not establish what happens when one encoder changes resolution mid-session.
