You can’t manually choose the matchmaking datacenter for regular Overwatch 2 games. Matchmaking selects a datacenter automatically, while Battle.net’s region control is for logging in—not a way to force a particular match server. The documented exception is custom games, where a datacenter may be specified.
What “region” means in Overwatch 2
Three different settings or locations are easy to confuse:

- Battle.net login region: The region selected in the launcher for logging in. It does not force Overwatch matchmaking to use a server in that region.
- Matchmaking datacenter: The server location used for a particular match. Overwatch chooses this automatically, based in part on ping and matchmaking needs.
- Battle.net account country or region: An account detail that may be changed through Blizzard’s support process if you meet its conditions. It is not a matchmaking-server setting.
Blizzard’s Global Play guidance explains that Overwatch players cannot select the play region and that the game places them in a suitable match based on ping. It also says game progress and collectibles are shared across Overwatch play regions, with the public test region excepted. Playing in another region may affect connection quality, and differences in patch rollout can prevent play where a region has not yet received the update.
1. Change the Battle.net login region only if you need to log in elsewhere
The Battle.net launcher’s region selector controls the region used to log in. It is not a supported method for choosing the datacenter for a regular Overwatch match. Switching it may be relevant for access or region-specific patch timing, but it does not guarantee that matchmaking will use a server in the selected region.

2. Check which datacenter your match used
To inspect the connection during a match, press Ctrl+Shift+N to open NetGraph. Look near the displayed IP address for a short datacenter code. This can help establish whether a match connected somewhere unexpected.
A 2021 Blizzard forum explanation of Global Play describes this check, but its code-to-city associations are historical community guidance, not a current official server map. Don’t treat an old code list as authoritative proof of a datacenter’s present location.

3. Let matchmaking choose the server for regular games
There is no supported manual matchmaking-datacenter selector. Blizzard forum guidance dated June 22, 2021 says the matchmaker may use a farther datacenter to accommodate factors such as group combinations, skill rating, or low-population periods in a datacenter. That is an explanation from a dated forum post, not a complete or newly confirmed description of the current matchmaking algorithm.
If you repeatedly connect to distant datacenters or see unusually high ping, treat it as a connection issue to investigate rather than assuming that changing the launcher region will pin you to a server. A 2022 Blizzard forum response cautions that the Practice Range is not a reliable way to identify the connected server and points to Quick Play or Arcade as better examples for checking. This is dated guidance, not a comprehensive diagnostic procedure.

4. Specify a datacenter for a custom game
The cited Blizzard forum guidance identifies custom games as the exception: a datacenter can be specified there. This applies to the custom game, not regular matchmaking, so it will not change the server chosen for Quick Play or other matchmaking games.

Changing your Battle.net account country or region is an account-support process, not a way to force an Overwatch match server. Blizzard’s country/region change guidance describes eligibility conditions, which can include account balance and residency documentation. The article distinguishes account country or region from the country where you physically reside; an approved account change does not promise a different matchmaking datacenter.

If you’re getting high ping or distant matches
- Use NetGraph in a match to see the datacenter code rather than inferring the server from the launcher region.
- Remember that a farther datacenter can be selected for matchmaking reasons, according to Blizzard’s 2021 forum explanation.
- If distant connections happen repeatedly, consult Blizzard support about the connection rather than relying on a VPN, firewall rule, account-country change, or third-party tool to select a server. The cited Blizzard sources do not establish those as supported server-selection methods.
