Yes. In Baldur’s Gate 3, you can change a Dark Urge character’s mechanical build through Withers and edit many appearance and identity-presentation settings at the Magic Mirror in camp. These are separate systems: Withers changes how the character plays, while the mirror changes selected cosmetic settings. Neither option changes the Dark Urge origin or its story.
What you can change
The two systems answer different needs. If you want to turn a Dark Urge wizard into a fighter, replace an unwanted subclass plan, or rebuild ability scores and spell choices, use Withers. If you want to revise the character’s face, voice, pronouns, or genitals after starting the campaign, use the Magic Mirror.

The Dark Urge is eligible for the Magic Mirror. Larian’s Patch 7 notes also describe a fix for Dark Urge characters being renamed after using it, confirming that this is an intended supported use rather than an accidental workaround.

1. Go to camp after the character has been created
The Magic Mirror is available in camp once the feature is present in your game. Camp layouts can differ, so look for the interactable mirror rather than a particular fixed landmark. Select it to open the character-editing interface.

2. Edit the supported settings
Larian describes the mirror as allowing repeated appearance changes. The supported categories include:
- Physical appearance settings presented by the character editor
- Voice
- Pronouns
- Genitals, referred to in Larian’s notes as “nether regions”
You can use the mirror more than once. This makes it useful both for correcting a design choice from character creation and for changing the character’s presentation later in a campaign.
3. Confirm the edit before saving
Patch 6 notes contain an important save warning: changes that are still being edited are not saved if you save the game before confirming the update. Finish the mirror session and accept the changes first; only then create a save on which you intend to rely. If the old appearance returns after loading, repeat the edit, confirm it, and save afterward.

Race and subrace
Race and subrace are locked after character creation. The mirror cannot turn a drow into an elf, change a tiefling subrace, or otherwise replace the character’s racial selection.
Body type
Body type is also excluded from the mirror’s editable fields. Changing facial details, hair, voice or pronouns does not provide a way to switch to another body type.

Origin, abilities and story state
The mirror is cosmetic. It does not remove the Dark Urge origin, rewrite the character’s personal storyline, or change the narrative consequences attached to that origin. It should not be treated as a second character-creation screen with access to every original setting.
Characters that are not eligible
Larian’s Patch 3 announcement lists restrictions: Origin characters, hirelings and full illithids cannot use the Magic Mirror. The same official material identifies the Dark Urge as an eligible use case, so a Dark Urge run can use the mirror even though the restriction list includes other character categories. If the mirror is unavailable on a different party member, that may be an eligibility restriction rather than a missing camp object.
How to change the Dark Urge’s class and rebuild
1. Speak with Withers in camp
Withers provides the respec service. This is independent of the Magic Mirror: changing your face does not alter your class, and respecing does not open the appearance editor.
2. Choose the respec option
Use Withers’ conversation to select the option that resets the character’s build. The official description establishes the function of the service but does not specify a universal fee in the cited material, so do not assume a particular gold cost from this guide.
3. Rebuild from Level 1
A respec does not merely swap the name of a class at your current level. It restarts the build from Level 1. You make the character’s class and subsequent level-up choices again, which lets you replace the original plan rather than patching one isolated decision.

- Class and the resulting level progression
- Starting proficiencies
- Ability-score assignments
- Spells
- Cantrips
4. Complete the levels again
After choosing the new starting setup, proceed through the available levels and select the desired features at each stage. A character who was built as a rogue can therefore be rebuilt as a cleric, paladin, sorcerer or another available class, subject to the game’s normal character-building rules. The respec affects the mechanical build; it does not turn the Dark Urge into a different origin.
5. Check the result before leaving camp
Review the final level, proficiencies, prepared or known spells, cantrips and ability scores before returning to the adventure. If the new role depends on a particular weapon, armor proficiency or spell, verify that the rebuilt choices actually provide it. Respec is most valuable when you use the full level-by-level reset rather than expecting a single class switch to preserve every old choice.
Appearance editing and respec are separate
It is possible to use both systems on the same Dark Urge. For example, you can first use Withers to rebuild a melee character as a spellcaster, then visit the Magic Mirror to change the character’s voice and facial appearance. The order does not merge the systems: the mirror will not grant new spells, and Withers will not change the character’s body type or face.
This separation also explains why an appearance change does not solve a build problem. If the issue is low ability scores, unsuitable proficiencies or a spell list you no longer want, return to Withers. If the issue is visual design or presentation, use the mirror instead.

Patch history that matters for a Dark Urge run
Patch 3: the Magic Mirror was introduced
Larian’s Patch 3 announcement, published September 22, 2023, introduced the Magic Mirror and described its repeat-use behavior. The announcement specifically says that appearance, voice, pronouns and “nether regions” can be changed, while race/subrace and body type cannot.
Community Update #21: what respec resets
Larian’s Community Update #21 describes respec as restarting a build from Level 1. Its explanation covers new starting proficiencies, attributes, spells and cantrips, which is why Withers can support a complete class rebuild rather than a cosmetic class label change.
Patch 6: confirm before creating a save
Patch 6 documents that unconfirmed character updates, including Magic Mirror edits, are not retained when a player saves before confirming the change. This is the main practical safeguard when editing the Dark Urge’s appearance.
Patch 7: a Dark Urge naming bug was fixed
Patch 7 notes report a fix for Dark Urge characters being renamed after using the Magic Mirror. The fix is useful context: the mirror is intended to work with the Dark Urge, and the naming issue was treated as a bug rather than a restriction.
Troubleshooting
The mirror is not visible
- Make sure you are searching in camp, not at a normal world location.
- Check that you are controlling the Dark Urge rather than a hireling or another excluded character.
- If the feature was just added or an edit was interrupted, leave and return to camp, then check again.
The changes disappeared after loading
Repeat the edit and confirm it inside the mirror before saving. Patch 6’s warning applies specifically to changes that remain unconfirmed when the save is made.

You cannot find a race, subrace or body-type option
Those fields are not missing because of a failed interaction; they are locked by design. The Magic Mirror does not provide those changes.
Withers did not preserve the old level choices
That is expected behavior. Respec restarts the build from Level 1, so reselect the class progression, proficiencies, attributes, spells and cantrips rather than looking for a one-click class replacement.
The Dark Urge’s story did not change
That is also expected. Appearance editing is cosmetic, and respec changes the build. Neither system replaces the Dark Urge origin or rewrites its narrative content.

Use the mirror when the problem is presentation
Choose the Magic Mirror for a new hairstyle or facial design, a different voice, revised pronouns or a different genital setting. It is repeatable, so you do not need to treat the first post-creation edit as permanent.
Use Withers when the problem is combat role
Choose respec when your ability scores, proficiencies, spells or class progression no longer fit the party. Plan to rebuild every level from the beginning, and check the completed character before leaving camp.
Do not expect either system to alter fixed identity choices
If your goal is a new race, subrace or body type, neither the Magic Mirror nor Withers supplies that option. Those selections remain outside the supported changes described by Larian.
