Yes. You can change the Epic Games display name used for Fortnite without buying a rename token or paying a fee identified in Epic’s instructions. The change is made in your Epic account settings, not in a Fortnite-only name menu. Your email address must be verified, and Epic permits one display-name change every two weeks (14 days).
There is one important exception for console players: Fortnite can show your PlayStation Network Online ID or Xbox Gamertag instead of your Epic display name. In that case, changing the Epic name will not change the name shown on that console.

What your “Fortnite name” actually is
Fortnite generally uses the display name attached to your Epic Games account. It is not a separate Fortnite-only username with its own in-game rename screen. For players on PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch and mobile, the Epic display name is normally the name other players see.
That distinction matters because an Epic display-name edit changes the account identity used across Epic-supported platforms, while a console account name is controlled by the console provider. If the name you see in a match comes from PlayStation or Xbox, you must change that platform identity instead.

Epic specifically says that changing its display name does not affect your PSN or Xbox gamertag/display name. As a result, the same Fortnite account can appear under different names depending on whether you are playing on a computer, Switch or mobile device versus a PlayStation or Xbox console.
How to change your Epic display name
Use a web browser and sign in to the Epic Games account that is linked to your Fortnite progress. The account must have a verified email address before the display-name control can be used.
- Sign in. Open Epic Games account management and log in with the account you use for Fortnite. If you have more than one Epic account, confirm that this is the one holding your cosmetics, progress and purchases.
- Open Account settings. Go to the account settings page rather than looking for a rename option inside a Fortnite match or lobby.
- Find Display name. Locate the field labeled Display name. This is the Epic identity that can be changed for supported platforms.
- Enter the new name. Type the name you want to use. Check the spelling carefully before saving, because another change may not be available immediately.
- Select Continue. Use the Continue button to submit and save the change. If Epic accepts it, the new display name becomes the account name for platforms that use Epic’s identity.
If the display-name field has a lock, do not keep submitting the form or create another account to work around it. The lock normally indicates that the account is still inside Epic’s waiting period. Hover over the information icon beside the field to see when the previous change occurred and when the control should become available again.
How often can you change it?
Epic’s documented rule is one display-name change every two weeks. In other words, the waiting period is 14 days measured from the last successful change. It is a cooldown on the Epic account, not a daily allowance that refreshes at midnight and not a pool of rename credits that can be saved up.

For example, if you save a new display name on a Monday afternoon, the account remains unavailable for another change until the corresponding two-week point has passed. Changing devices, reinstalling Fortnite, signing out and back in, or opening the account page in a different browser does not shorten that interval.
The lock icon is therefore an expected status indicator, not evidence that the account is broken. The information icon is the useful check: it identifies the timing of the previous change so you can return after the restriction expires.
Is the change really free?
Epic’s official instructions describe the operation as an account-setting change and do not identify a fee, paid token, V-Bucks charge or other purchase. On that documented basis, changing the Epic display name is free. You only need access to the correct Epic account and a verified email address.

That answer applies to the Epic display-name procedure. PlayStation and Xbox manage their own Online ID and Gamertag systems, so a console name change is a separate action governed by the relevant platform account. Epic’s display-name page cannot change those platform identities.
Why your name can look different on PlayStation or Xbox
PlayStation
When Fortnite is running through PlayStation, the visible identity may be your PSN Online ID. If that is the name appearing to friends or in matches, use PlayStation’s account controls to change it. Editing the Epic display name alone will not alter the PSN name.
Xbox
On Xbox, Fortnite may show the Xbox Gamertag. Change that name through the Xbox account system when the Gamertag is the identity you want to update. An Epic display-name edit does not rename the Gamertag.

Mixed-platform accounts
A player who uses the same Epic account on several devices can see apparently inconsistent results: the new Epic name on PC, Switch or mobile and the older console identity on PlayStation or Xbox. That is a platform naming difference, not a failed Epic change. First identify which service supplied the name on the screen you are looking at, then change the name in that service.

What to check before you submit
- Correct account: Confirm that the signed-in Epic account is the one connected to your Fortnite profile. A successful change on another Epic account will not change the name attached to your main progress.
- Email verification: Complete Epic’s email-verification requirement before expecting the Display name field to work.
- Platform source: Decide whether the visible name comes from Epic, PSN or Xbox. This prevents changing the wrong identity.
- Spelling: Read the proposed name once more before selecting Continue. The next Epic change may be blocked by the two-week cooldown.
- Community standards: Choose a name that is not offensive, misleading, rights-infringing or otherwise against Epic’s rules. A name that passes the form can still be changed later if it violates the rules.
What happens if Epic resets your name?
Epic’s Terms of Service allow it to change a display name that is offensive or misleading, violates the Community Rules, or infringes someone else’s rights. This is different from a voluntary rename: Epic can replace the violating name with a random display name.
After a reset, Epic’s support guidance says you can choose a new name once the two-week interval has elapsed. The reset does not remove your Fortnite gameplay progress or purchases. Your account remains the same; the visible display-name value is what changes.
A reset is not a way to obtain an extra rename. Treat the replacement name as a temporary account label and wait for the normal availability period before selecting a compliant one.

Epic display name versus a console identity
These are separate account properties even when they are connected to the same Fortnite experience. The Epic display name belongs to the Epic Games account. A PSN Online ID belongs to PlayStation, and an Xbox Gamertag belongs to Xbox. Fortnite can use the appropriate platform identity when you play through that console.

This separation explains why changing a name in one place does not synchronise every screen. It also explains why a player may need to use two different account-management pages to achieve the desired appearance across PC and consoles. Decide first whether your goal is to rename the Epic account, a console account, or both.
What the change does not affect
A display-name change changes the label other players see; it does not create a new Fortnite account. Epic’s support information also states that a name reset does not remove gameplay progress or purchases. The important practical safeguard is signing in to the account that already contains those items before editing the field.
Because the Epic name is an account setting, reinstalling the game is unnecessary. The web account page is the control point for PC, Mac, Switch and mobile, while the console provider remains the control point for a PSN Online ID or Xbox Gamertag.
