No. Sony does not let you change the country or region on an existing PlayStation Network account. If a game is sold in another country’s PlayStation Store but not in the US store, the supported practical route is to create a separate PSN account registered to that country. Keep your US account for its existing purchases, trophies, saves, subscriptions and account history.
Can you change the country on an existing PSN account?
There is no settings switch that migrates a US PSN account to Japan, the United Kingdom, Europe or any other storefront. PlayStation Support states, “Once created, your country/region can’t be changed.” Sony’s US Terms of Service use the same rule: “Once your account is created, you will not be able to change the country or region code associated with your account.”

The restriction applies to the account itself, not merely to the store display language or the address attached to a payment method. Changing your console’s language, time zone or user profile does not move the account to another storefront. Creating a new email address and registering a second account is the supported way to use another country’s PlayStation Store.

PlayStation uses the country selected during account creation to determine which store you access, which transaction rules apply and which vouchers can be redeemed. Sony’s purchase documentation says you cannot purchase or download items from a country or region other than the one selected when the account was created.

Country matching also affects physical games and downloadable content. PlayStation Support warns that an add-on cannot be used with a game on disc when the add-on’s country or region does not match the country or region of the disc. A game can therefore run on your console while its expansion, season pass or in-game currency fails to recognize the installation.
Your realistic options
| Route | Account continuity | Payment requirement | Main compatibility concern | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep using the US account | All existing purchases, trophies, saves and subscriptions stay together | US payment method or US voucher | The unavailable title remains unavailable in the US storefront | Best continuity, but it does not unlock another country’s catalog |
| Create a separate regional account | New purchases belong to the second account | A payment method or PlayStation Store voucher accepted in the target country | The base game and add-ons must use matching country or region licenses | Provides access to the target storefront while adding another sign-in and ownership record |
| Try to change the US account’s country | There is no supported migration | Not applicable | The account country remains the original selection | Not a workable route under Sony’s account rules |
The second-account route is the only practical storefront option established by Sony’s published rules. It does not merge libraries: the account that completes a purchase remains the account associated with that purchase.
How to use another country’s PlayStation Store
- Leave the US account unchanged. Do not try to replace its country or region. Its existing library, account history and subscriptions are tied to that account.
- Create a separate PSN account. During registration, select the country whose storefront sells the game. Use accurate registration information. Sony’s US Terms of Service require accurate account information and allow Sony to suspend, terminate or restrict an account that uses false information.
- Confirm that the title is sold in that storefront. A listing in another country does not change the catalog on your US account. The new account must be the one accessing and purchasing from the target country’s store.
- Arrange an accepted payment method. Sony says transaction eligibility and billing can be tied to the account’s country or area. A card whose billing information does not match the account’s country may be rejected. If a card is not accepted, use a PlayStation Store voucher issued for the target country, provided the voucher is valid for that marketplace.
- Buy the game with the regional account. The purchase is recorded against the account that made it. Signing in with your US account later does not transfer ownership or change which account owns the purchase.
- Plan add-ons before buying them. Check the country or region of every expansion, season pass, bonus item and disc edition. For an imported physical game, buy add-ons from the same country or region as the disc’s licensed version.
A PlayStation Store gift card for the target country can be useful after you have created the matching account, but verify the specific marketplace listing before buying. Sony’s rule is explicit: voucher codes and the account’s country or region must match for successful activation.
Will a Japanese or European PSN account work on a US console?
The account country is selected during account creation, so a separate Japanese, European or other regional account can provide access to that region’s storefront when the game is offered there. The important distinction is ownership: the second account is a separate identity, not a conversion of your US account.

That separation affects how you organize your library. Your US account continues to represent its own purchases and history, while the regional account records the imported title and any content bought for it. Keep track of which account bought each game before troubleshooting downloads, licenses or add-ons; signing into the wrong account can make an item appear to be missing even when the purchase is valid.
Why a foreign credit card may be rejected
Payment failures on a different storefront are usually a country-matching problem rather than a console fault. Sony ties transaction eligibility and billing to the country or area selected for the account. A US card, for example, may be declined when its billing information does not match an account registered to another country.
Use a payment method that matches the storefront
For the regional account, use a payment method accepted in that country. If you cannot use a matching card, a voucher issued for the target country is the alternative identified by Sony’s guidance. The voucher must match the account country; a code purchased for a different marketplace may fail at redemption even if the currency appears similar.

Check the account before redeeming a code
Verify that you are signed into the intended regional account before entering a voucher. Because the code and account country must match, redeeming while signed into the US account will not convert the US account into the target country or make a foreign code valid for it.

Will DLC work with an imported PS5 or PS4 disc?
Only when the add-on’s country or region matches the licensed country or region of the disc. This is the most important compatibility check when importing a physical game. A Japanese disc paired with US DLC, or a European disc paired with Japanese DLC, can result in an add-on that cannot be used with the installed game.
Before buying an add-on
- Identify the country or region for which the physical disc was licensed.
- Open the store associated with that same country or region.
- Buy the expansion, season pass or other add-on from the matching storefront.
- Keep the base game and downloadable content associated with the account and marketplace that support that edition.
Do not assume that identical game titles, language options or a compatible console make DLC interchangeable. Sony’s published warning is specifically about the country or region of the disc and the add-on.
What happens to your US purchases, trophies and subscriptions?
They remain on the US account. Creating a regional account adds a second ownership record; it does not relocate or merge the US library. The comparison is straightforward: keeping one account preserves continuity, while the second-account route supplies access to another storefront at the cost of an additional sign-in and separate purchase history.

Does a VPN change your PSN region?
The official pages considered here do not establish that a VPN changes PSN eligibility or provide a supported method for bypassing country restrictions. A VPN should therefore not be presented as an official region-change solution. It cannot alter the country code already attached to your PSN account, and it does not remove Sony’s requirements for accurate account information, matching payment details or matching voucher codes.
Using inaccurate registration information creates a separate risk. Sony’s US Terms of Service require accurate information and permit suspension, termination or restriction when false information is used. The safer interpretation of Sony’s rules is to create a separate account only when you can register it accurately and fund it with an accepted regional payment method or voucher.

“I cannot find the game on my US account.”
That is expected if the title is not sold in the US storefront. Leave the US account unchanged and check whether the game is offered in another country’s store. If it is, create a separate account for that country rather than attempting to edit the US account’s region.
“My foreign voucher code will not redeem.”
Check the account country and the voucher marketplace. Sony says the voucher code and account country or region must match. A code for one country is not a general-purpose credit balance for every PlayStation Store.

“My credit card is declined on the foreign store.”
Review the billing information and country associated with the regional account. Sony notes that transaction eligibility and billing can be tied to the account’s country or area, so a card from another country may be rejected. Use an accepted payment method for the target country or a matching regional voucher.
“The imported game works, but the DLC does not.”
Compare the disc’s licensed country or region with the add-on’s country or region. Sony warns that an add-on cannot be used when those regions do not match. Obtain the DLC from the storefront that corresponds to the disc edition.
“I bought the game, but it is missing from my US library.”
Sign into the account that made the purchase. Purchases remain tied to that purchasing account; creating a second account does not add the item to the US account’s purchase history.

Decision checklist before you create a second account
- Is the game actually listed in a non-US PlayStation Store?
- Can you register the regional account with accurate information?
- Can you obtain a payment method or voucher accepted in that country?
- Are you prepared for the second account to own the purchase?
- For a physical import, do the base game and every planned add-on share the same country or region license?
- Are you comfortable managing an additional sign-in and separate ownership record?
If any answer is no, retaining the US account and waiting for a US release avoids payment, ownership and DLC complications. If all answers are yes, the separate-account route follows Sony’s published account, purchase and voucher rules without pretending that the original US account has changed region.
