Yes. You can use a Sony DUALSHOCK 4 on a Windows PC without Bluetooth by connecting it with a compatible micro-USB data cable. Bluetooth is needed only for a direct wireless connection. Sony documents both wired USB and wireless-adapter connections for PC use: PlayStation PC support.
What you need
- A Sony DUALSHOCK 4 controller. Third-party PS4-style pads may behave differently.
- A Windows PC with a working USB port.
- A micro-USB cable that supports data and charging (also called a sync cable). The DUALSHOCK 4 uses micro-USB, not USB-C.
- A game that supports the controller directly, or an input layer such as Steam Input or DS4Windows.
A cable that only charges cannot carry controller input. For a first test, use a short, known-good cable connected directly to the computer rather than through a hub. Sony lists a compatible micro-USB cable as a supported PC connection method and notes that features vary by game or application: Sony’s PC controller guidance.
How to connect a DUALSHOCK 4 with USB
- Start Windows and sign in.
- Insert the micro-USB end into the controller.
- Insert the USB end directly into the PC.
- Press the controller’s PS button.
- Wait for Windows to install or recognize the device, then open your game.
A successful connection may produce a Windows device sound, show the controller in Steam, or make the buttons and sticks respond in a game. To check Windows independently of any game, press Win + R, enter joy.cpl, and press Enter. Select the controller, choose Properties, and use the test panel. If inputs appear there, Windows is receiving the controller signal.

- Open Steam > Settings > Controller (the wording can vary slightly between client versions).
- Confirm that Steam lists the controller.
- Launch the game. If it does not respond, open that game’s controller properties and enable Steam Input for the title.
Steam Input can translate DUALSHOCK 4 signals for games that expect a more conventional PC gamepad. A normal trade-off is Xbox-style button prompts even though the controller is working. Steam also documents support for features such as the trackpad, gyro and light bar, but an individual game must request and support those features.
Non-Steam games: Epic, Xbox app, GOG, emulators and standalone titles
Some Windows games recognize a DUALSHOCK 4 directly. Others accept only XInput, the format commonly associated with Xbox controllers. If the game works in joy.cpl but ignores it, use one compatibility layer rather than several.

Option 1: Use the game’s own controller settings
Check the title’s input menu and select a gamepad or PlayStation controller if offered. Emulators generally require their own button and axis mapping even when Windows detects the pad.
Option 2: Use DS4Windows
DS4Windows is an open-source mapper that can expose the DUALSHOCK 4 as a virtual Xbox-style controller. It is not a Sony or Microsoft utility, and several projects use the same name. Use a clearly identified repository, such as this maintained fork and its release instructions, rather than an unknown download mirror. - Install and open the selected DS4Windows build.
- Complete its first-run driver prompts.
- Confirm the controller appears and select or create a profile.
- Start the game after the virtual controller is available.
Do not normally run Steam Input and DS4Windows on the same controller at the same time. Two layers can create duplicate or “double controller” input. DS4Windows setup guidance discusses hiding the physical device with HidHide when required: DS4Windows installation and setup.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Windows does not detect the controller
- Replace the cable with a known-good micro-USB data cable. A charging-only lead is the most common mistake.
- Try another USB port, directly on the PC and not through a hub.
- Reseat the plug; a worn micro-USB socket can provide power while losing data contact.
- Check
joy.cpl. If the controller is absent, open Device Manager and watch Human Interface Devices, Sound, video and game controllers, and possibly Universal Serial Bus controllers while reconnecting it. - Restart Windows and test again with the controller disconnected during startup.
Turn off or move the PS4 away while testing, disconnect the controller from other devices, and press PS after plugging it into the PC. You can also press the small reset button on the controller’s back, but resetting cannot repair a damaged cable or USB socket.

Windows detects it, but the game does not
- Verify buttons and sticks in
joy.cpl. - For a Steam game, verify Steam sees it and try per-game Steam Input.
- For a non-Steam game, try DS4Windows if the title expects XInput.
- Ensure only one remapping system is active.
- Close and relaunch the game after changing the input method.
A game can accept the controller perfectly while displaying Xbox glyphs. Prompts are a software choice, not proof that the USB connection failed.
It disconnects during play
- Try a shorter or better-fitting cable and another USB port.
- Avoid moving the plug in a worn controller socket.
- Test without a hub and close competing controller utilities.
What works over USB—and what may not
Basic buttons, the D-pad, analog sticks and triggers are the normal baseline. Touchpad input, gyro or other motion controls, rumble, light-bar behavior, headset audio and microphone input depend on the game, launcher and input layer. Sony explicitly says controller features vary by compatible game or application: Sony’s feature guidance. Do not assume that a headset connected to the controller will work in every PC title.

Need wireless without built-in Bluetooth?
A cable is the only no-Bluetooth hardware method. If you want wireless play, you need a radio accessory:

Sony’s wireless adaptor was designed to pair a DUALSHOCK 4 with a Windows PC or Mac: official adaptor instructions and Sony’s announcement. It is an older product, so avoid paying inflated used-market prices without checking alternatives. Which method should you choose?
- Need it working immediately: use a micro-USB data cable.
- Playing on Steam: start with USB and Steam Input.
- Playing outside Steam: try native support, then DS4Windows if the game requires XInput.
- Competitive or latency-sensitive play: wired USB avoids wireless variables and battery drain.
- Wireless is essential: add a Bluetooth dongle or locate a compatible Sony wireless adaptor.
If you need to buy a cable, verify “data,” “sync” or “charge-and-sync” support rather than choosing on charging wattage alone.
