Start with the text beneath “LowLevelFatalError.” If it mentions D3D device being lost or 0x887A0020, troubleshoot the graphics-driver and rendering path. If it says PanicSyncRead failed to read pak file, treat the installation or storage drive as the priority. A repeatable crash at one scene needs a different approach from a launch crash.
Identify which Stray crash you have
LowLevelFatalError is an Unreal Engine crash category, not a single diagnosis. The detail line determines which branch to follow.

One reported render-thread failure waited 120 seconds for the render thread, which indicates a rendering stall rather than proof that the computer lacks RAM. Player reports also describe D3D device being lost and 0x887A0020 during the Dead City paint-bucket sequence; those reports establish a recurring symptom, not a confirmed universal cause (Steam discussion).
Quickest triage sequence
- Restart Windows.
- Close Steam Overlay, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, OBS, RGB utilities, hardware monitors, VPN clients, ReShade and other injectors.
- Return GPU and CPU overclocks, undervolts, custom power limits and memory profiles to stock.
- Verify Stray through Steam: Library → right-click Stray → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam redownload damaged data, restart Steam, and test again.
- Install the correct graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. Use the installer’s clean or factory-reset option when available, then reboot.
- In Steam, open Properties → General → Launch Options and test one flag at a time:
-dx11, then-d3d11, or-dx12. Remove the flag between tests. These are compatibility experiments, not guaranteed repairs; Steam lists DirectX 12 as the formal requirement. - If the game runs, lower resolution or resolution scale, textures, shadows, effects and post-processing; disable ray tracing if exposed; cap the frame rate at 30 or 60 FPS; and test with one monitor and HDR disabled.
- Re-test the exact location that previously crashed. Record the result before changing another variable.
Check the hardware baseline
Steam’s current Windows listing specifies the following baseline (Steam store page):

Meeting the minimum is not a stability guarantee for every driver, resolution or scene. The separate macOS listing requires an Apple processor and macOS 13 Ventura; Windows launch flags and GPU-control-panel steps do not automatically apply there.
Fix D3D device loss and error 0x887A0020
Repair or roll back the graphics driver
Install the driver directly from your GPU manufacturer and select a clean-install option if offered. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, testing the previous stable driver is reasonable; “newest” is not always “working” for an older game.

Remove instability
Disable GPU overclocking, undervolting, custom fan or power profiles, CPU overclocks and memory overclock profiles temporarily. Check temperatures and power behavior, then test another demanding game or benchmark. If only stock settings work, keep the system at stock or retune conservatively.
Reduce the rendering workload
Use a 30 or 60 FPS cap, lower effects and shadows, reduce resolution scale, and avoid uncapped menus. Temporarily disconnect a second monitor and disable HDR or unusual display modes. These measures address device-loss and timeout symptoms; they will not repair a corrupted .pak file.

Use an alternate API carefully
Test -dx11 or -d3d11 alone. If the alternative path fails while the normal path does not, remove the flag. Community guides report these options as workarounds, not developer-confirmed universal fixes (community troubleshooting video).
Fix “PanicSyncRead failed to read pak file”
Do not begin with DirectX flags when the message names a pak file. Verify the installation first, ensure at least 10 GB of free space, and inspect the drive for errors. Avoid external or network-mounted locations that disconnect or report faults. If Steam repeatedly redownloads the same file, move Stray to another Steam library or drive and test again. Reinstall only after verification and storage checks fail. Never download replacement pak files or DLLs from third-party sites. Handle a crash at one repeatable scene
Repeated reports place D3D-device-loss crashes in the Dead City paint-bucket sequence and other rendering events (player discussion). Treat this as a reported failure mode, not proof of a universal bug.
- Reload an earlier save or checkpoint.
- Set graphics to low or medium and cap 30 or 60 FPS.
- Disable every overlay, mod and capture hook.
- Try
-dx11. - Pass the scene, then restore settings gradually.
If the same checkpoint still fails after file verification, stock clocks, driver repair and API testing, report the exact location and error text to the developer or Steam community.

Laptops and dual-GPU systems
On Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add or browse to the Stray executable, choose Options → High performance, save and restart. If Windows does not expose that choice, use the equivalent NVIDIA or AMD control-panel setting. Running the game on the integrated GPU can produce instability or very poor performance even when a discrete GPU is installed.
Secondary checks
Administrator permissions
As a temporary test, browse to the executable through Steam’s installed-files menu and choose Properties → Compatibility → Run this program as an administrator. Revert it if there is no change. This cannot repair a lost Direct3D device or damaged game data.
Visual C++ runtime
A missing or damaged runtime can cause launch failures, but it is not a strong explanation for every LowLevelFatalError. Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads, never a DLL-download site.
What not to do
- Do not download replacement DLLs, pak files, “all-in-one” fixers or driver-updater subscriptions.
- Do not make random registry or configuration edits.
- Do not assume every LowLevelFatalError is a GPU fault; pak-read failures point elsewhere.
- Do not reinstall Windows before testing files, drivers, clocks, overlays, storage and another API.
- Do not buy a GPU merely because this message appeared. Upgrade only when the hardware is below the listed baseline or demonstrably unstable.
When it is probably hardware or a game defect
If multiple demanding games crash, the display driver resets, temperatures are abnormal, or failures continue at stock settings on a verified installation, investigate the GPU, power delivery, memory and storage. If Stray alone fails at one reproducible scene while other games remain stable, a game-specific rendering incompatibility or defect becomes more plausible. Testing another drive, GPU or PC can separate the game from the local environment.

What to send to support
Record the full error text and line number; startup, loading or scene location; Windows version; CPU, GPU, RAM and storage drive; driver version; launch flag; whether verification repaired files; and whether disabling overlays or returning to stock clocks changed the result. Press Win + R, run dxdiag, and save the report. Also search Windows for View reliability history. These records help distinguish a game crash from a driver reset or broader hardware fault.
