For a wired picture on the laptop, use an HDMI capture card with an HDMI input and compatible software. For a no-capture-card option, use PS Remote Play over a network; for a direct HDMI connection, use a monitor with HDMI input.
Why a direct HDMI cable usually does not work
The PS5 sends video through its HDMI OUT connector, as shown in Sony’s PS5 setup and support information. Ordinary laptop HDMI ports are generally outputs, not inputs, so they cannot display a signal from the console. A Microsoft Q&A response from an independent advisor on January 17, 2026, describes that limitation and the capture-card workaround; it is practical guidance, not a specification for every laptop. Check the manual or specifications for your exact laptop model before assuming what its port supports.
If your PS5 HDMI is not showing on the laptop, the likely issue is that the laptop port cannot accept video—not the cable. Repeatedly changing HDMI cables will not turn an output port into an input.
Option 1: Use a capture card for a wired laptop display
A capture card can accept the PS5’s HDMI signal and pass it to the laptop for viewing in compatible software. This is the wired route when you specifically want the console’s picture on the laptop screen.

- Connect an HDMI cable from the PS5’s HDMI OUT to the capture card’s HDMI input.
- Connect the capture card to the laptop using its supported connection.
- Open capture or viewing software that supports the card, then select the card as the video source.
Check the capture card’s specifications for HDMI input, laptop connection requirements, supported software, and compatibility with your laptop. The available information does not establish specific card models, supported PS5 resolution or frame-rate combinations, or preview latency. Do not assume the picture will feel like playing on a directly connected monitor; verify the details for the card and software you intend to use.
Option 2: Play on the laptop with PS Remote Play
PS Remote Play streams the PS5 to a Windows PC or Mac over a network. It does not send video through the laptop’s HDMI port. Sony’s PC and Mac Remote Play instructions cover the app, system requirements, setup, and video-quality settings.

Sony’s Remote Play guidance calls for at least 5 Mbps upload and download; its support pages recommend 15 Mbps or higher for best performance. These are network recommendations, not guarantees of smooth play or low latency. Actual results depend on the network and setup.
Option 3: Connect the PS5 to an HDMI monitor
If an external screen is acceptable, connect the PS5’s HDMI OUT directly to the monitor’s HDMI IN. Sony illustrates this setup in its guide to connecting and using its 27-inch gaming monitor with PS5 consoles. Check your monitor’s inputs and display capabilities in its model specifications.
