Not directly. A standard Xbox One or Xbox Series controller cannot normally pair with a PS5 through Bluetooth or work by simply plugging it into the console. To use one, you need a compatible controller converter—such as the Brook Wingman P5—and you must verify that the converter supports your exact Xbox controller model.
For the simplest and most reliable experience, use a DualSense. An adapter is worth considering if you already own an Xbox controller, prefer its offset-stick layout, or need a specific accessibility setup.

Can you connect an Xbox controller directly to a PS5?
No. The PS5 does not normally recognize an Xbox Wireless Controller as a native controller. You cannot pair it through the PS5’s standard Bluetooth process, and a regular USB cable does not convert it into a PS5-compatible gamepad.

There is one important distinction: an Xbox controller can work indirectly through a compatible USB controller adapter. The adapter translates the controller’s signals into a format the PS5 can recognize.
What you need to use an Xbox controller on PS5
For PS5-format games, the strongest current option is a PS5-specific converter such as the Brook Wingman P5. Brook says it supports PS5, PS4, and PC X-Input and lists more than 100 wired and wireless controllers, including the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2.
That does not mean every Xbox controller will work. “Xbox controller” could mean an Xbox 360 wired pad, an Xbox 360 wireless controller and receiver, an Xbox One controller, an Xbox Series X|S controller, an Elite Series 2, an Adaptive Controller, or a third-party licensed model. Compatibility can vary by model revision, firmware, wireless protocol, and connection method.

Check the converter manufacturer’s current compatibility list for the exact model before buying. Brook says only controllers on its official Wingman P5 list are guaranteed.
How to set up an Xbox controller with a Brook Wingman P5
- Identify the exact controller. Check its model and whether the converter supports it in wired, wireless, or receiver-based operation.
- Update the converter firmware. Use Brook’s official downloads and support page before troubleshooting.
- Connect the Wingman P5 to the PS5.
- Change the PS5 communication method. Open Settings > Accessories > Controller > Communication Method, then select Use USB Cable. Brook recommends this setting for smoother operation.
- Connect the Xbox controller. Use a USB cable if wired operation is supported. If the compatibility list permits wireless pairing or a 2.4-GHz receiver, follow the adapter’s model-specific instructions.
- Test the controls. Check the PS button, sticks, triggers, menu controls, and in-game inputs.
- Correct the mode or mapping if necessary. A recognized controller may still have incorrect button assignments if the converter is in the wrong mode.
Brook’s FAQ documents these Wingman P5 mode shortcuts:
- PS + Up: PS5 mode
- PS + Left: PC mode
- PS + Right: PS4 mode
- PS + Down: Auto mode
Those shortcuts apply specifically to the Wingman P5 and should not be assumed to work on every converter. See Brook’s Wingman P5 FAQ for reset and remapping procedures.
Does an Xbox controller work with PS5 games?
It can, but only through a PS5-compatible converter and only when the controller is supported. Brook markets the Wingman P5 for PS5 and PS4 games, subject to its compatibility-list and setup limitations.

Do not confuse PS5 hardware with PS4-format software running on a PS5. Sony says a DUALSHOCK 4 works with PS4-format games played on PS5, but not with PS5-format games. Sony also limits licensed PS4 standard gamepads to PS4 games on PS5, as explained in its PS5 FAQ.
Older converters can therefore give misleading results. Brook’s Wingman XE2 may support various Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers for PS4 games on PS5, but Brook’s FAQ specifically limits XE/XE2’s PS5 use to PS4 games. It should not be the default choice for PS5-native games.
If a game has both PS4 and PS5 versions, launching the PS4 version may change controller compatibility. That is title-dependent and should not be treated as a guarantee.
What features will you lose?
An adapter can make an Xbox controller usable, but it does not turn it into a DualSense. Expect some limitations:

- Haptic feedback: DualSense-specific haptics will not be reproduced in the same way.
- Touchpad: Touchpad actions may require emulation, remapping, or a special button combination.
- Gyroscope: Motion-control functions may be unavailable or unsupported.
- Headset and microphone audio: Brook lists sound as unsupported for the Wingman P5, so do not assume that a headset plugged into the controller will work.
- Button labels: Games may display PlayStation icons while you are holding a controller marked A, B, X, and Y.
- Vibration: Brook lists vibration support, but actual behavior can depend on the controller, game, firmware, and connection mode.
The physical positions of Xbox A/B/X/Y broadly correspond to PlayStation Cross/Circle/Square/Triangle, but the printed labels remain different. Menu, View, Share, Options, Create, and touchpad commands may also require adjustment.
Troubleshooting an Xbox controller adapter on PS5
The PS5 says the controller is unsupported
- Confirm that the controller is connected through the converter rather than directly to the PS5.
- Check the exact model against the manufacturer’s compatibility list.
- Update the converter firmware.
- Set Communication Method to Use USB Cable.
- Select the appropriate PS5 mode and reconnect the controller.
- Test a wired connection before attempting wireless pairing.
It works in menus but not in a game
Check whether the game is running in its PS5-native version and whether the adapter is intended to support PS5-format games. Also check whether the specific controller revision is listed. A controller may appear functional in system menus while lacking a feature required by a particular game.
The buttons are swapped
Check the converter’s mode and remapping settings. If the game shows PlayStation prompts, remember that the labels on an Xbox controller will not match the on-screen icons.

The wireless connection drops
Start with a wired test, reseat or replace the USB cable, update the converter, and pair the controller again. Keep the converter away from crowded wireless devices and possible USB 3.0 interference. Wireless reliability depends on the controller, adapter, firmware, and surrounding environment.

There is no headset audio
This may be a product limitation rather than a fault. Brook specifically lists sound as unsupported for the Wingman P5. Use another audio path or a native PS5-compatible controller if controller-connected headset audio is essential.

Choose an adapter if you already own a supported Xbox controller, strongly prefer its ergonomics, need a particular accessibility configuration, or want to avoid buying another full controller. Accept that audio, touchpad behavior, haptics, wireless stability, and firmware support may be less convenient.
Buy a DualSense instead if you want reliable plug-and-play compatibility, adaptive triggers, full haptic feedback, the built-in microphone, or the fewest variables for competitive play. The official DualSense support page is the appropriate starting point for native-controller setup.
Mayflash’s MAGIC-S Pro is another possible converter, but its documentation includes model- and connection-specific restrictions, including wired-only conditions for some Xbox One and Xbox Series configurations. Treat it as an alternative only after checking the exact controller and required connection method.
Bottom line
You cannot normally connect an Xbox controller directly to a PS5 through Bluetooth or USB. You can use one indirectly with a compatible converter: for PS5 games, check the exact controller against a PS5-focused adapter such as the Brook Wingman P5; for PS4-format games, older adapters such as the Wingman XE2 may be suitable. Verify compatibility before buying, and do not expect DualSense features or controller audio to carry over fully.
