Why direct Bluetooth speaker pairing is not a supported PS5 audio route

Sony’s PS5 FAQ, published November 9, 2020, says third-party wireless headsets that use Bluetooth will not be supported, although most USB and analog headsets will be. Sony’s guidance for error CE-109531-9 likewise identifies a Bluetooth audio device that triggers the error as incompatible.

The practical takeaway is narrower: do not expect a Bluetooth speaker to pair directly with the console as a supported audio device. Set up an HDMI soundbar or AV system
PlayStation’s PS5 audio settings guidance describes selecting an output device and configuring an HDMI device type. When you select an AV amplifier, the console also provides channel and speaker-position settings. Which connections are available depends on whether the audio system is connected through the TV/display or directly as part of the HDMI chain.

- Check the connection path. Consult the manuals for the PS5, TV/display and soundbar or AV system. Establish which device receives the PS5’s HDMI signal and how audio reaches the speakers.
- Select the output device on the PS5. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and choose the output device that matches your setup. The available choices can depend on the connected equipment.
- Set the HDMI device type if applicable. If the PS5 is connected to an AV amplifier, configure the HDMI device type and use the available channel and speaker-position settings to match the system.
- Check for sound. If audio does not come through the intended system, verify the physical connections and the TV/audio-system input, then confirm the PS5 is set to output audio to an HDMI device. PlayStation’s picture and sound troubleshooting guidance includes checking the HDMI audio output setting.
If you want to use a Bluetooth speaker anyway
You may be able to route sound through a TV/display or an intermediary transmitter, but that is not the same as pairing the speaker directly to the PS5. The equipment in that chain determines whether it works. Before buying an adapter or changing your setup, confirm that the source device can send audio through the required connection and that the speaker can pair with that source. Check the manuals for both devices rather than relying on a general promise of PS5 compatibility.
Also verify how the specific devices handle audio in your intended setup. The official guidance cited here does not establish universal compatibility or specify audio delay for TV-to-speaker or transmitter-based connections, so avoid assuming that every combination will behave the same way.

What to do when the PS5 reports CE-109531-9
Sony identifies error CE-109531-9 as a compatibility issue involving a Bluetooth audio device. If it appears while you try to use a speaker, stop treating that speaker as a supported direct PS5 audio output. Choose another route—such as a compatible HDMI audio system—or check whether your TV/display supports sending its audio to the speaker.

- For a USB or analog headset, check the exact device’s compatibility; Sony’s support statement says “most,” not all, are supported.
- For a Bluetooth speaker behind a TV or transmitter, troubleshoot the pairing and output settings on those devices. That does not change the PS5’s direct Bluetooth support.
Bottom line for choosing a setup
If you want sound from speakers with the least ambiguity, look at an HDMI-connected soundbar or AV system and confirm its connection path against your TV/display and PS5. If you already own a Bluetooth speaker, first check whether your TV/display can send audio to it. Neither option should be confused with direct Bluetooth speaker pairing to the console.
