Yes. You can usually uninstall the Xbox app in Windows 11, but “Xbox” is not one program. Xbox Game Bar and Gaming Services are separate components, and removing the wrong one can disrupt the overlay or some Game Pass and Microsoft Store games. For most people, uninstall the Xbox app alone—or disable Game Bar if its pop-ups are the problem—is the safer choice.

What “Xbox” means in Windows 11

Windows devices can have several distinct Xbox-related components. Their names and availability vary by Windows build and device configuration, so you may not see every item below.

Component What it does What to do
Xbox app Provides access to Xbox features such as PC Game Pass, the game catalog, social features, and game installation and management. Usually safe to uninstall if you do not use it.
Xbox Game Bar An overlay opened with Win + G, with widgets and features such as capture and performance tools. Disable it if you only want to stop the overlay; uninstall it separately if Windows offers that option.
Gaming Services A Windows gaming component used by the Xbox app and some Microsoft Store games. Usually leave it installed, especially if you play Game Pass or Store games.
Microsoft Store Distributes and updates apps and games, and is a route for reinstalling Xbox apps. Keep it; removing it is unnecessary for uninstalling Xbox.
Other Xbox-related services May support functions such as authentication, networking, saved games, or controllers. Avoid manually deleting these as routine cleanup.

How to uninstall the Xbox app

Use Windows’ normal uninstall controls first. Microsoft notes that some built-in apps do not offer a standard uninstall option. See Microsoft’s Windows app-uninstall instructions.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Search for Xbox and locate the Xbox app.
  4. Select its three-dot menu (…), then choose Uninstall.
  5. Confirm the prompt. Restart if Windows asks you to.

You can also open Start > All apps, right-click Xbox, and choose Uninstall if that option appears.

If you cannot find an Uninstall option

Check that you have selected the Xbox app rather than Xbox Game Bar. The app may already be removed, may appear under a different name, or may be subject to device-management restrictions. Microsoft also lists account type, region, compatibility, and administrator controls among factors that can affect Microsoft Store availability; see Microsoft’s guidance for a missing Microsoft Store app. On a work- or school-managed device, ask your administrator before trying to bypass a restriction.

Remove or disable Xbox Game Bar

Game Bar is separate from the Xbox app. If Windows offers an uninstall control, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, search for Xbox Game Bar, and select … > Uninstall.

If Win + G pop-ups are the problem

Try disabling Game Bar rather than removing it, particularly if you want to retain gaming features. Open Settings > Gaming and look for the Xbox Game Bar controls; available labels and locations can differ between Windows 11 builds. If you use a controller, check whether its button is configured to open Game Bar. To stop background recording, review Settings > Gaming > Captures. To quiet alerts, see Settings > System > Notifications and turn off notifications for Xbox or related gaming apps if they appear.

Removing Game Bar does not remove every Xbox-related app, service, or package. If a game or app later reports an ms-gamingoverlay error when it tries to open the overlay, reinstall Game Bar through Microsoft Store rather than deleting additional Windows components.

Should you remove Gaming Services?

Usually not as part of ordinary Xbox cleanup. Gaming Services can be needed to install or launch Xbox app and PC Game Pass games, as well as some Microsoft Store games. Removing it can lead to installation, launch, sign-in, or licensing problems. If you later install a game that needs it, you may be prompted to restore it.

Microsoft Q&A community guidance discusses Gaming Services as part of the Windows gaming setup and notes that gaming components may return after updates. Treat that as a reported possibility, not a guarantee about every Windows device: Microsoft Q&A discussion of removing gaming apps.

Advanced: inspect packages before using PowerShell

PowerShell is not the recommended first method. Microsoft’s standard uninstall guidance does not present wildcard commands as a universal, permanent way to remove all Xbox components. If you are comfortable with package management and have a specific reason to proceed, create a restore point or backup first, then inspect what is installed for your user:

Get-AppxPackage *xbox* | Select-Object Name, PackageFullName

Only remove a package after confirming its exact identity and that you accept the consequences. Replace PACKAGE_NAME below with the package’s actual name shown on your system:

Get-AppxPackage *gaming* | Remove-AppxPackage

They use wildcards and can match components you did not intend to remove, particularly the broader *gaming* pattern. Get-AppxPackage generally targets packages for the current user unless additional parameters are used. Removing an AppX package does not necessarily remove associated services, scheduled tasks, files, or components for other users. These commands are community-recommended, not a guaranteed official procedure for permanent removal; the community discussion is at Microsoft Q&A. Do not delete registry entries as routine cleanup.

What happens to games, saves, and Game Pass?

  • Installed games: Uninstalling the Xbox app does not automatically mean that every installed game is deleted. Game files and the app that manages them can be separate.
  • Game launches and installs: Removing Gaming Services can stop some Xbox, Game Pass, or Microsoft Store games from installing or launching.
  • Saves: Whether progress is preserved depends on the individual game, its account and cloud-sync behavior, and where it stores local saves. Check the game’s save and sync behavior before removing related gaming components.
  • Game Pass subscription: Uninstalling the app does not cancel a subscription or delete a Microsoft account. If you want to stop billing, manage or cancel the subscription separately through your Microsoft account.

Microsoft says Store downloads and Xbox games can generally be installed again through your account’s library or download history, subject to account, region, availability, and compatibility. See Microsoft’s instructions for finding and installing Store downloads.

If Xbox is missing from the Store or will not install

Check that you are signed into the right account, and consider region, device compatibility, Store access restrictions, and pending Store or Windows updates. Microsoft lists account, compatibility, and availability issues in its Microsoft Store installation troubleshooting. If the Store itself is behaving incorrectly, Microsoft says running wsreset.exe resets its cache; a blank command window may appear briefly before the Store opens. The command and recovery steps are covered in Microsoft’s Store downloads guidance.

If a gaming app remains stuck signing in or Gaming Services appears damaged, Microsoft Q&A discusses the Gaming Services Repair Tool as a troubleshooting option. Its availability and suitability can depend on the issue and Windows setup; see the Microsoft Q&A discussion.

Choose the least disruptive fix

Your goal Recommended action
You never use the Xbox app or Game Pass Uninstall the Xbox app through Settings if Windows offers the option.
You want to stop Win + G interruptions Disable Game Bar or its controller-button launch behavior; uninstall it only if you prefer.
You use Microsoft Store games or PC Game Pass Keep Gaming Services installed.
You only want less visual clutter Unpin Xbox from Start or the taskbar instead of removing packages.
You want to free disk space Check large game installations first. The Xbox app may free some package and cache space, but the amount varies and is unlikely to rival removing a large game.
The Xbox app is malfunctioning Try updating, repairing, or resetting it through Windows app settings before advanced package removal; Microsoft recommends updating Windows and Store apps and then repairing or resetting apps in its Store app troubleshooting guidance.
