The Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Ultra Gaming Rev. 1.0 is a legacy ATX motherboard for Intel’s Z170 platform, built for sixth- and seventh-generation LGA1151 processors and DDR4 memory. Its strongest reason to keep or buy one is unusual-for-its-era connectivity: Gigabyte specifies Thunderbolt 3, M.2, U.2, SATA Express, and six SATA ports. It can still serve a compatible existing PC or a carefully priced legacy build, but it is not a sensible default for a new gaming system: its CPU platform is old, its firmware support is legacy, and its features should not be confused with current USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 capability.

What the GA-Z170X-Ultra Gaming is

This is the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Ultra Gaming, revision 1.0, based on Intel Z170 Express and using the LGA1151 socket in its original sixth- and seventh-generation platform context. It is an ATX board. “Ultra Gaming” is this model’s name, not an indication that it is a current-generation AORUS board. Do not confuse it with the Z170X-UD5 TH, Gigabyte’s Z170X-Gaming 5/6/7, Z170X-Designare, or later AORUS Ultra Gaming products. See Gigabyte’s product page and official specifications.

Area GA-Z170X-Ultra Gaming Rev. 1.0
Chipset and socket Intel Z170 Express; LGA1151
Processor families Sixth- and seventh-generation Intel Core, plus supported Pentium and Celeron models; exact CPU support depends on the board’s BIOS
Memory Four dual-channel DDR4 DIMM slots; non-ECC, unbuffered
Expansion Three PCIe 3.0 x16-length slots (electrical x16, x8, and x4) and three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots
Storage One M.2 Socket 3, one U.2, two SATA Express connectors, six SATA 6 Gb/s ports; RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10
Networking and audio Intel Gigabit Ethernet; Realtek ALC892 audio, up to 7.1-channel analog and optical S/PDIF
Firmware features AMI UEFI, DualBIOS, and Q-Flash

Which CPUs work, and why BIOS version matters

Gigabyte lists supported sixth-generation and seventh-generation Intel Core i7, i5, and i3 processors, as well as compatible Pentium and Celeron CPUs. Socket fit alone does not establish compatibility: later LGA1151 processors are not automatically supported by this Z170 board.

For seventh-generation processors, Gigabyte’s support page identifies BIOS F20, released November 9, 2016, as adding seventh-generation CPU support. The same page lists F21 for improved XMP compatibility (December 13, 2016), F22 for Vcore voltage adjustment (March 16, 2017), F23d for a CPU microcode update addressing the HT flaw (June 28, 2017), F23g for an Intel ME security-vulnerability update (December 1, 2017), and F23j for a CPU microcode update (March 9, 2018). F23j is the newest version listed in the retrieved support information, not a claim that Gigabyte has newly updated this legacy board. Check the revision-specific Gigabyte support page for the current listing and release notes.

#1 Best Overall
GIGABYTE LGA1151 Intel Z170 ATX DDR4 Motherboards GA-Z170X-UD5
  • LGA1151, Supports 6th Generation Intel Core Processors
  • Memory: 4x DDR4 DIMM Slots and Dual Channel.
  • Slots: 1x PCI - Express 3.0 x16 Slots, 1x PCI - Express 3.0 x8, 1x PCI - Express 3.0 x4 and 4x PCI - Express 3.0 x1
  • Audio: Realtek ALC1150 7.1 - Channel High Definition Audio CODEC.
  • Storage Interface: 3 x SATA Express,8 x SATA 3 and 2 x M.2.

If a board with an unknown BIOS is being paired with a seventh-generation CPU, ask the seller to confirm the BIOS version or demonstrate a successful POST. If it has an older BIOS, updating may require a supported sixth-generation CPU first. Before flashing, confirm the board revision, read Gigabyte’s instructions, and use Q-Flash as directed in the official manual. Do not interrupt power during an update or flash solely because a newer number exists.

Memory: DDR4, four slots, and XMP caveats

The board has four DDR4 DIMM slots and a dual-channel memory architecture, for non-ECC, unbuffered desktop memory. The available specification information does not establish a reliable maximum capacity or a complete supported-speed table here, so verify the exact kit and CPU against Gigabyte’s revision-specific memory and CPU support documentation rather than assuming a capacity or advertised XMP speed.

Use a matched kit and follow the manual’s slot-population guidance. Two DIMMs are generally an easier configuration to stabilize at higher memory settings than four; XMP results can depend on the CPU’s memory controller, module density, BIOS, and whether the modules are a matched set. Gigabyte’s F21 release note itself calls out improved XMP compatibility. If four modules fail while two work, start at default JEDEC settings, test modules individually, and add only a matched kit before trying XMP again.

Gigabyte LGA1151 Intel Z170 2-Way SLI ATX DDR4 Motherboards GA-Z170X-Gaming 7
  • LGA1151, Supports 6th Generation Intel Core Processors
  • Memory Socket: 4 x DDR4 DIMM sockets
  • Support for 2-Way NVIDIA SLI technology, 3-Way AMD Crossfire
  • 1 x USB 3.1 (A+C) port, 7 x USB 3.0 ports, 4 x USB 2.0 ports
  • Slots: 1x PCI-Express 3.0 x16 Slot, 1x PCI-Express 3.0 x8 Slot, 1x PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Slot, 3x PCI-Express 3.0 x1 Slots

PCIe slots, graphics cards, and lane sharing

The first full-length slot runs at x16 when used alone. Populating the two primary graphics slots divides the CPU-connected lanes to x8/x8. The lowest full-length slot is electrically x4, and its use can affect SATA availability.

Slot Electrical link Practical note
PCIEX16 x16 when used alone Preferred location for a single graphics card
PCIEX8 Up to x8 Shares the main CPU lane allocation with PCIEX16
PCIEX4 x4 A sufficiently high-bandwidth card in this slot disables SATA 3 0/1
Three PCIe x1 slots x1 each For lower-bandwidth add-in cards

A current PCIe graphics card may work in a compatible system, but this board does not make modern GPU firmware behavior, Resizable BAR support, or performance assumptions safe. Its period SLI/CrossFire support is not a persuasive reason to buy it for present-day gaming.

Storage: M.2, U.2, SATA Express, and SATA

For a Z170-era board, the storage mix is broad: one M.2 Socket 3 connector supports 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 device lengths and SATA or PCIe x4/x2 SSD interfaces; there is also one U.2 connector, two SATA Express connectors, and six SATA 6 Gb/s ports. RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 are specified. These are connector and interface capabilities, not a guarantee that every modern drive or configuration will behave identically.

GIGABYTE LGA1151 Intel Z170 ATX Motherboard ATX DDR4 NA Motherboards (GA-Z170X-GAMING 5)
  • LGA1151, Supports 6th Generation Intel Core Processors
  • Memory socket: 4 x DDR4 DIMM sockets
  • Expansion Slots: 1x PCI-Express 3.0 x16 Slot, 1x PCI-Express 3.0 x8 Slot, 1x PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Slot, 4x PCI-Express 3.0 x1 Slots
  • Support for 2-Way NVIDIA SLI technology, 3-Way AMD Crossfire
  • 3 x SATA Express connector, 6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors

The key documented expansion conflict is the PCIEX4 slot: installing a sufficiently capable card there makes SATA 3 0/1 unavailable. Consult the manual’s connector and sharing diagrams before laying out a combination of drives and add-in cards. A PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 NVMe drive is from a newer generation than this PCIe 3.0-era platform; do not expect the motherboard to provide the drive’s newer interface capabilities.

  • If an M.2 SSD is missing, confirm whether it is SATA or PCIe/NVMe, check its supported physical length, inspect UEFI storage settings, and review lane-sharing rules.
  • Distinguish detection from booting: a drive can appear in UEFI yet still require a compatible boot mode, partition setup, and operating-system support.
  • If SATA drives disappear after installing an add-in card in PCIEX4, check whether they are connected to SATA 3 0/1.

Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C: useful, but not interchangeable

Gigabyte described the board as an Intel Thunderbolt 3 Certified Motherboard. Its published specifications list a rear USB Type-C port with USB 3.1 support, a rear USB 3.1 Type-A port, and a Thunderbolt add-in-card connector. Gigabyte also advertised USB Type-C and PD 2.0 100 W support; treat that as a manufacturer-specific published feature, not a universal guarantee that every cable or device can receive 100 W.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB-C describes the connector shape, not the protocol. This board should not be described as USB4 or Thunderbolt 4. A peripheral may require Thunderbolt protocol support rather than ordinary USB 3.1, a particular cable, drivers, or a compatible add-in-card arrangement. Before buying the board for a dock, display, capture device, or storage enclosure, verify the exact device’s requirements against Gigabyte’s documentation and the device maker’s compatibility information. Historical reviews identified Thunderbolt as the board’s distinctive premium feature, especially for external-device and storage users, rather than a gaming-performance advantage (Tom’s Hardware review).

  • LGA1151, Supports 6th Generation Intel Core Processors
  • Dual channel DDR4, 4 DIMMs
  • Intel USB 3.1 with USB type-C - the world's next universal connector
  • 3-Way graphics support with exclusive ultra durable metal shielding over the PCIe slots
  • PCIe Gen3 x4 M.2 connector with up to 32Gb/s data transfer (PCIe & SATA SSD support)

Rear I/O, displays, audio, and networking

The rear panel includes a PS/2 keyboard/mouse port, USB Type-C, USB 3.1 Type-A, Mini DisplayPort input and output, HDMI, four USB 3.0/2.0 ports, two USB 2.0/1.1 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, optical S/PDIF, and five analog audio jacks. The display outputs depend on a processor with integrated graphics; they are not a substitute for a discrete GPU in a gaming build. Gigabyte specifies HDMI 1.4 up to 4096×2160 at 24 Hz and Mini DisplayPort 1.2 up to 4096×2304 at 60 Hz, with up to 1024 MB shared graphics memory.

The Intel Gigabit Ethernet controller is a useful wired-networking feature. The Realtek ALC892 provides period-appropriate HD audio, up to 7.1-channel analog output and optical S/PDIF; it should not be mistaken for a modern premium audio solution. Fan connections include a CPU fan header, CPU_OPT_PUMP, two system fan headers, and SYS_FAN2_PUMP. Cooler fit still depends on LGA1151 mounting hardware and case, radiator, and fan clearance.

BIOS, drivers, and operating-system support

DualBIOS uses two 128-Mbit BIOS flash chips, and the board supports AMI UEFI and Q-Flash. These features are useful safeguards and update mechanisms, not a reason to treat firmware maintenance as risk-free. Check the installed version, use the correct Rev. 1.0 download, read the release notes, and follow the manual’s update procedure. Gigabyte’s support material is centered on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10-era drivers and utilities; do not assume APP Center, EasyTune, System Information Viewer, or bundled drivers remain supported on a current operating system. Gigabyte’s support notes direct Linux users generally to appropriate chipset-vendor or other sources.

Gaming and overclocking today

At stock settings, this board belongs to a platform whose gaming performance is determined chiefly by the particular supported CPU, memory, GPU, and game, not by the “Ultra Gaming” branding. Historical reviews found broadly normal platform performance and small differences among comparable boards, while identifying Thunderbolt as a more meaningful point of distinction. The same reviews found overclocking less compelling than the board’s feature list might suggest: results and thermal or power behavior varied, and one review described an overclocking wall (PC Perspective; Tom’s Hardware).

Z170 enables overclocking with suitable processors, but the chipset alone does not guarantee headroom. CPU sample, cooling, BIOS, memory configuration, voltage, VRM temperature, and power supply all matter. Do not choose this board on the assumption that it will extract exceptional performance from an old CPU. Its integrated lighting and black-and-red styling are also period features, not modern addressable RGB customization.

Used-board inspection checklist

Because this is a legacy platform, condition and total system cost matter more than an old launch price. A 2016 review cited roughly $159–$160 at the time; that is historical context, not a current valuation. No fixed fair used price is established here.

  • Confirm the exact model and Rev. 1.0 marking; inspect clear photos of the PCB and LGA1151 socket pins.
  • Request proof of POST with a CPU and memory, and ask for the installed BIOS version.
  • Check for corrosion, burn marks, damaged PCIe retention tabs, and missing heatsinks.
  • Test the M.2 slot, Ethernet, rear USB, audio, and relevant storage ports; verify which SATA ports are available in the intended slot configuration.
  • Confirm that the I/O shield is included and establish the return policy before purchase.
  • If Thunderbolt is the reason for buying, identify any required add-in-card accessories and verify the intended peripheral, cable, protocol, and operating-system support.
  • Calculate the complete cost of board, compatible CPU, DDR4, cooler, storage, PSU, shipping, and return protection. Compare that total with a newer CPU-and-board platform.

Should you keep, buy, or replace it?

Keep it if you already own a working system

If the board, CPU, and DDR4 are stable, it can remain useful for a secondary PC, legacy software, storage duties, or a specific Thunderbolt workflow. A compatible CPU upgrade may make sense only when the CPU is verified and the necessary BIOS is already installed or can be updated safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider buying one as a replacement, not as a default new build

A tested, inexpensive board can be a practical replacement when you already have compatible parts or need a particular legacy interface. Avoid an untested board without return protection, especially if you cannot verify BIOS state or socket condition.

Choose a newer platform for a new primary gaming PC

If you need current CPU performance, a meaningful upgrade path, newer PCIe and USB standards, current firmware support, or modern wireless networking, put the money toward a newer platform. If Thunderbolt is essential, a newer Thunderbolt-capable board is the safer direction when modern peripheral compatibility matters. If ordinary external storage is all you need, USB 3.x may be a simpler fit than paying extra for legacy Thunderbolt hardware.
