You can check whether the disc works with your specific Xbox model, then install and play it on supported hardware that has a disc drive. Use Xbox’s compatibility lookup for older-generation games and confirm the exact console model before you begin.
What “digitize” means for an Xbox game disc
Installing a game from a disc copies game data to the console; it does not, by itself, give you a digital entitlement to play without the disc. The disc remains relevant to disc-based play. Xbox’s support pages describe compatibility and moving from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, but do not establish a program for converting a disc into a standalone digital copy.
Check whether your disc can be used on your Xbox
- Identify the game and its original Xbox generation. Note the exact title and whether the disc was released for Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, or another generation.
- Identify your console model and disc-drive hardware. Check the model rather than relying only on “Series X|S” or “Xbox One”: a disc can only be read by a console with an optical drive.
- Look up older-generation games. Search the title in Xbox’s backward-compatible game lookup. Compatibility is title-specific, so do not assume every older Xbox disc will work.
- Check the console transition guidance. If you are moving from Xbox One to Series X|S, consult Xbox’s migration guide and verify your precise console model.
- Insert the disc and follow the console’s installation prompts. Successful installation means the console has installed game data; it does not mean the disc has been converted into a digital license.
What to do if the console does not recognize the disc
Record the exact error code shown on the console and use the matching Xbox Support guidance. Xbox has a page for error code 0x87e10011; its guidance should not be treated as a fix for other error codes. If no code appears, the available support information does not establish a universal disc-recognition fix.
If you need to play offline
Offline use has its own setup conditions, separate from whether a disc is compatible or installs. Check Xbox’s Xbox One offline-use guidance and verify the requirements for your specific game and console setup. The support information available for this topic does not specify all current offline conditions.

Choose the right path for what you want
| Your goal | What to check | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Play the disc on your current Xbox | Whether the exact title is supported on that console generation, and whether the console has a disc drive. | That the disc has become a digital license. |
| Move from Xbox One to Series X|S | Your exact Series X|S model and Xbox’s migration guidance. | That every Xbox One disc works on every Series X|S model. |
| Play without inserting the disc | Whether you have a separate digital entitlement for the game. | That installing from your disc grants one. |
| Install or play offline | The console’s offline-use guidance and the requirements for the particular game and setup. | That offline play is guaranteed solely because the game installed. |
