Short answer: Minecraft Education does not officially support importing custom player or NPC skins. You may download a PNG skin file, but there is no supported Education workflow that imports and applies it. If you meant downloading the game itself, use the official Minecraft Education download page.
If you meant “download Minecraft Education”
Open the official download page, choose your platform, install the app, and sign in with the school, organization, or eligible Microsoft account required by your license. The page lists downloads for Windows, Chromebook or Android, Mac, and iPhone/iPad. It displayed version 1.21.133 when checked in August 2026; use the live page rather than treating that number as permanently current.
Windows installation choices
Organizations can use the Microsoft Store or the desktop installer. Microsoft’s Windows Installation Guide says the two Windows versions work similarly but are incompatible with each other. Uninstall one before switching to the other.
For Windows deployment, the guide documents these WinGet commands:

winget search "Minecraft Education"
winget install "Minecraft Education" --scope user
winget install "Minecraft Education" --scope machine
These commands install the application only; they do not install skins.
Licensing
The official licensing page displayed $5.04 per user per year for qualified educational organizations and $36 per user per year for eligible commercial organizations such as camps and clubs, both with annual commitment, on August 18, 2026. Eligibility, country, taxes, and purchasing arrangements can change. A license does not unlock custom-skin importing.
If you meant downloading and using a skin
Downloading a PNG and importing it are different actions. A skin website may let you save a file to your device, but the official Minecraft Education FAQ states that custom skins for players and NPCs are not supported: Minecraft Education FAQ.
Consequently, there is no supported sequence of downloading a PNG, opening a Dressing Room import control, and applying that skin. If an import button is missing, that is normally the product limitation—not evidence that your PNG is corrupted.

Why Java and Bedrock skin tutorials fail in Education
| Edition | Why a tutorial may not apply |
|---|---|
| Java Edition | Uses Java-specific installation, account, and mod systems. |
| Bedrock Edition | Supports consumer Bedrock features and file workflows that are not automatically available in Education. |
| Minecraft Education | Is a separate classroom product with its own supported features and restrictions. |
Education uses some Bedrock content concepts, but that does not mean feature parity. The official add-on guide warns that custom skins, third-party mods, and Java Edition mods are not officially supported: Teachers Guide to Add-Ons.

What .mcpack, .mcaddon, .mcworld, and .mctemplate files do
| Extension | Officially described purpose | Player-skin import? |
|---|---|---|
.mcpack |
Resource pack or behavior pack | No supported guarantee |
.mcaddon |
Bundle containing resource and behavior packs | No supported guarantee |
.mcworld |
Packaged world | No |
.mctemplate |
World template for relevant content workflows | No |
A resource pack can change textures or other visual elements in a world, while a behavior pack changes gameplay behavior. The extension alone does not turn a package into a supported personal-skin system, and the official guide explicitly excludes custom skins.
Why unofficial skin workarounds are unreliable
Community posts have described skin packers or manually copying files into application folders, but official support responses identify custom skins as unsupported. For example, see this support response and this out-of-box-feature response.
- A method may work only with one older build or platform.
- An update can break it without notice.
- Files may not transfer between Windows, iPad, Chromebook, Mac, and other platforms.
- School-managed devices can block application-folder changes.
- Support may not troubleshoot problems caused by unsupported modifications.
- Unknown “skin installers,” launchers, or executable downloads can request unnecessary permissions or contain malware.
Do not alter a school-managed installation without administrator permission. Never bypass device controls to install an unofficial skin method.
What to do when a skin attempt fails
The PNG downloaded, but nothing happened
That is expected under the official limitation: Education does not officially import custom player skins. The file itself is not necessarily bad.
An .mcpack imported, but no skin appears
The package may target ordinary Bedrock, contain an invalid manifest, be restricted by the device, or change world resources rather than provide a player-skin feature. Import success does not establish skin support.

The skin works in Bedrock but not Education
That is an edition mismatch. Bedrock compatibility does not promise Education compatibility.
It worked on an old computer
Treat that as an unsupported, version-specific modification rather than proof of a current feature. It may stop working after an update or reinstall.

Account sign-in does not make unsupported local skin files roam. An official discussion about transfer confirms that custom skins are unsupported: Transferring skins.
The school blocks the download or import
Contact the school’s IT administrator. Do not bypass management policies or edit protected folders.
Supported ways to personalize an Education lesson
- Use the appearance and character options exposed by the current Education build, if your organization permits them.
- Use official lesson worlds, templates, and educational content.
- Use Bedrock-compatible resource or behavior packs only when they are appropriate for Education and approved by the school or organization.
- Create visual identity with armor, dyed leather, banners, named items, builds, signs, NPC dialogue, cameras, and portfolios.
- If dependable personal skin imports are essential, use a supported consumer Bedrock or Java installation, subject to its account, age, device, and school policies.
The licensing page uses the phrase “customizable skins,” but that should not be read as approval for importing an external PNG. It can refer to built-in appearance or personalization options; the support FAQ remains explicit that custom player and NPC skins are unsupported.

Teachers, administrators, and NPCs
A teacher can distribute a lesson world or an approved add-on, and an administrator can manage application deployment. The official material does not establish a supported workflow for assigning each student a personal custom player skin. The same restriction covers NPC skins, so classroom role-play characters cannot be given imported custom NPC textures through an official feature.
