HP Omen Max 16 (RTX 5090) review: spectacular plugged-in speed, compromised value

The HP Omen Max 16 RTX 5090 is a fast, upgradeable OLED desktop replacement—but its six-pound chassis, weak gaming battery and inconsistent lead over RTX 5080 laptops make discount pricing essential.

Verdict: The RTX 5090 HP Omen Max 16 is an excellent desktop-replacement laptop when you want maximum plugged-in 1600p performance, 24GB of VRAM and a superb 240Hz OLED screen. It is not an automatic best buy: the roughly six-pound chassis, heavy adapter, weak gaming battery life and inconsistent lead over RTX 5080 rivals make the $4,000-plus configuration worth buying only at a meaningful discount.

  • Best for: enthusiasts, creators and AI/3D users who need high mobile GPU memory and mostly play or work near an outlet.
  • Avoid if: you prioritize portability, all-day battery life, maximum brightness, a great keyboard or performance per dollar.
  • Configuration reviewed by major outlets: Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 32GB DDR5, 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD and 16-inch 2560×1600 240Hz OLED.

First, identify the Omen Max 16 you are buying

“Omen Max 16” describes a family, not one fixed machine. HP sells versions with Core Ultra 7 255HX or Core Ultra 9 275HX processors, RTX 5060 through RTX 5090 graphics, up to 64GB of memory, up to 2TB of storage, and 165Hz FHD+, 240Hz QHD+ IPS or 240Hz QHD+ OLED panels. Check the complete product number before comparing a listing; an RTX 5090 OLED review cannot stand in for an RTX 5060 IPS model. RTINGS documents the configuration range.

HP specifies 24GB of GDDR7 on the RTX 5090 version and advertises OMEN Tempest Cooling PRO, with Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E depending on SKU. Its Unleashed Mode can raise total platform power to as much as 250W, a configurable maximum rather than a guaranteed sustained draw. HP’s product page also cautions that actual performance varies.

Test configuration and what the numbers mean

The most useful published results come from different review units and procedures. Tom’s Hardware tested the Core Ultra 9/RTX 5090/32GB/2TB/OLED combination at $4,329; Tom’s Guide tested a materially similar configuration at $4,299. Those are review-period prices, not a current August 2026 street-price guarantee.

DLSS 4, frame generation, power mode, firmware, drivers and the CPU can materially change results. A generated frame-rate number is not equivalent to the same number of conventionally rendered frames or the same input latency.

Gaming performance: extremely fast, not universally the fastest

At 2560×1600, the Omen Max 16 delivers the performance expected from a high-power RTX 5090 system, but the badge alone does not guarantee first place. Laptop power limits, cooling and firmware matter, and some RTX 5080 competitors matched or exceeded it in portions of Tom’s Hardware’s suite.

Tom’s Hardware recorded 3,097 single-core and 19,822 multi-core in Geekbench 6, plus a 2-minute-54-second 4K-to-1080p transcode. Its 25GB file copy averaged 1,395.4MB/s, slower than some rivals despite the fast PCIe 4.0 drive. Laptop Mag also noted that HP directed its testing with Nvidia driver 572.62 while 572.82 was available, so comparative conclusions from that run are not definitive hardware limits. Tom’s Hardware testing and Tom’s Guide testing should be read as configuration-specific evidence.

The 240Hz OLED is the strongest reason to choose it

The reviewed panel is sharp at 2560×1600, extremely responsive and rich in contrast, with genuinely black pixels and wide-gamut color. Tom’s Hardware measured 362.8 nits in SDR and 141.4% DCI-P3 volume; Tom’s Guide measured the same brightness, 199.7% sRGB volume, 141.4% DCI-P3 volume and a 0.31 Delta-E on its unit. These are independent measurements of particular panels, not guarantees for every regional SKU.

HP lists, for the relevant OLED configuration, up to 240Hz, 0.2ms response time, 500-nit SDR, HDR up to 1,100 nits, 100% DCI-P3, variable refresh and VESA True Black HDR 1000. See the HP support specification for that SKU. In a bright room, some competing IPS panels are brighter and their matte finish reflects less. OLED also warrants sensible static-desktop habits because burn-in remains a long-term risk; its subpixel layout can make small text look less crisp than on a conventional RGB LCD.

Cooling, power modes and noise

Tom’s Guide found the Omen unusually cool and quiet for its class. HP recommends charging above 90% and selecting Max Fan for the best thermal capability on RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 versions. HP’s optimization guidance is useful because maximum performance depends on the full-power adapter and the selected OMEN Gaming Hub mode.

Use Balanced for ordinary work, Performance for sustained gaming and Unleashed when you accept more power, heat and fan noise. Owner reports describe occasional throttling, crashes or repasting, but those are anecdotal and may reflect a particular unit, firmware, driver or thermal-compound condition; they do not establish a product-wide defect. Verify temperatures and stability during your return window rather than assuming every chassis behaves identically.

Battery life: a desktop replacement in practice

Gaming away from the charger is the Omen’s clearest weakness. Tom’s Guide and Tom’s Hardware each recorded 1 hour 25 minutes in their PCMark 10 gaming test. Tom’s Guide measured 3 hours 20 minutes of web browsing, while TechRadar reported approximately 5 hours 10 minutes in PCMark 10 and about 5 hours in its movie test. Those figures differ because of refresh rate, OLED versus IPS, brightness, hybrid/discrete graphics mode, Windows settings, background software, battery health and test methodology.

HP lists an 83Wh battery for one Omen Max 16 configuration. Treat the machine as capable of light work away from an outlet, not as an all-day notebook. Gaming should be done on the supplied high-wattage adapter; do not assume a small USB-C charger can sustain maximum performance.

Weight, build and everyday handling

The reviewed laptop weighs about 6.1lb and Tom’s Hardware notes a power brick of roughly two pounds. HP support material lists 2.68kg (about 5.91lb) for another configuration, illustrating regional variation. The practical travel load is therefore close to eight pounds before accessories. Tom’s Guide lists dimensions of 14.04×10.59×0.9 inches.

The aluminum lid and base look restrained rather than aggressively gamer-styled, and the construction feels premium, but the machine is heavy. Tom’s Guide liked the subdued design and per-key RGB. Tom’s Hardware found the keyboard mushy and lifeless, a meaningful concern if you also write or code on it. Hinge stability, deck flex, webcam quality, speakers and trackpad quality vary less dramatically in coverage than the keyboard, but none turns this into an ultraportable.

Keyboard, camera, audio and ports

The full-size keyboard includes navigation keys and per-key RGB controlled through OMEN Gaming Hub. Reviewers disagree on feel: Tom’s Guide praised the overall experience, while Tom’s Hardware preferred a firmer, more responsive action. Try the keyboard if office work matters as much as gaming.

The tested port selection includes two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, Ethernet and a 3.5mm headset jack. USB-C/Thunderbolt supports DisplayPort output. Wireless connectivity is SKU-dependent: HP lists Wi-Fi 7 with Bluetooth 5.4 or Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3. Confirm the exact regional arrangement before ordering. HP’s listing is the appropriate reference.

OMEN Gaming Hub and upgradeability

OMEN Gaming Hub provides performance profiles, fan controls, Unleashed Mode, overclocking controls, hybrid-graphics selection, RGB customization, game-library features and update tools. HP describes Unleashed as raising total platform power to as much as 250W without a BIOS change; that is a manufacturer ceiling, not a promise of constant draw or a fixed frame-rate gain.

Memory and storage are the practical advantages over thinner flagships. The family supports up to 64GB RAM and up to 2TB storage according to RTINGS, but do not assume a second empty M.2 slot, identical screw layout or identical Wi-Fi-card access across SKUs. Check the service manual for your product number; opening the chassis can also affect warranty handling in some regions.

How it compares and what the RTX 5090 premium buys

At launch-period review pricing, the RTX 5090 OLED Omen cost about $4,299–$4,329, while the family started at $2,499 with lower specifications. Current prices must be checked against the exact seller, memory, storage, panel and warranty. A similarly equipped RTX 5080 machine that delivers nearly the same 1600p frame rates is usually the better value unless your workload needs the 5090’s 24GB VRAM.

Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 Direct RTX 5090/5080 flagship rival Exact display, price and configuration vary; see Lenovo’s family page
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 RTX 5090 More portable premium design Thin chassis may trade sustained performance, ports or upgradeability; verify the SKU
ASUS ROG Strix Scar 16 Performance-focused 16-inch rival Panel brightness, styling and price are configuration-dependent
Alienware Area-51 18 RTX 5090 Larger desktop-replacement screen Best Buy listed $5,949.99 for one 64GB/2TB model; it is substantially less portable
Desktop PC More performance per dollar, quieter cooling and easier upgrades Requires a separate monitor and gives up mobility

Retail category listings are price signals, not permanent offers. For example, Best Buy showed a 32GB/2TB Zephyrus G16 RTX 5090 at $3,949.99 with a displayed $450 saving during the cited research period. Check the live listing before treating any figure as current. Best Buy’s RTX 5090 category also contains competing Scar and Alienware systems.

Who should buy it?

Competitive and AAA gamers

Buy if you play plugged in and value the OLED’s 240Hz response. Competitive players should remember that a frame-generated number does not equal native latency.

Creators, AI and 3D users

The 24GB VRAM pool and 24-core CPU are compelling for large scenes, models and video work. Upgrade to 64GB only after confirming memory compatibility and the exact workload.

Students and commuters

Choose another laptop unless you can accept the six-pound machine, near-two-pound adapter and short gaming endurance.

Desktop-replacement buyers

This is the Omen’s natural audience: strong plugged-in performance, a large screen for a laptop and user-serviceable memory/storage potential.

Value-focused buyers

Start with the RTX 5080 Omen and compare it with discounted Legion or Asus systems. Pay the 5090 premium only when 24GB VRAM or a clearly faster configuration matters to you.

The Bottom Line

The HP Omen Max 16 RTX 5090 is a powerful, well-equipped desktop replacement whose OLED display and 24GB VRAM are genuinely premium. Its value depends entirely on price: buy the exact Core Ultra 9/RTX 5090/OLED configuration when discounted and when you will stay near an outlet; otherwise, an RTX 5080 model, a better-tuned rival or a desktop is the smarter investment.
