Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →No—documented vanilla Minecraft behavior does not let a dispenser empty a cauldron. To remove water or lava, use an empty bucket on the cauldron yourself. A dispenser can collect a water source block with a bucket, but that is a different interaction.
How to empty a cauldron
- Hold an empty bucket.
- Use the bucket on the filled cauldron. Mojang’s cauldron guide describes using an empty bucket to remove a cauldron’s contents.
The guide also says cauldrons accept water and lava, but not milk.
Why a dispenser works on water but not a cauldron
A water source block and a cauldron are different targets. A dispenser can collect a water source block directly in front of it when activated with an empty bucket, but the Minecraft Wiki bucket reference says that emptying a cauldron does not work with dispensers. The source-block behavior is also described by the Thai Minecraft Wiki.
| Target | Bucket interaction | Can a dispenser do it? |
|---|---|---|
| Water source block | Collect it with an empty bucket | Yes, according to the cited water-bucket reference |
| Filled cauldron | Use an empty bucket as a player to remove the contents | No, according to the cited bucket reference |
Edition and version context
Mojang’s guide does not specify a Java or Bedrock version for this mechanic. A Java Edition 1.17.1 player report describes the dispenser interaction failing, but it is historical corroboration rather than a current-version test. The cited documentation therefore supports the practical answer for documented vanilla behavior, not a claim that every current edition has been freshly verified.
