You can’t enable Fortnite ray tracing on PS5 with a separate setting. Epic says Fortnite’s Lumen-based global illumination and reflections are automatic on PS5, with no setting required. The “change one setting” advice applies to 120 FPS—not to ray tracing.
How Fortnite lighting works on PS5
Epic Games describes the PS5 effects as Lumen-based global illumination and reflections. They are built into Fortnite’s rendering on the console rather than controlled by a ray-tracing switch. See Epic’s ray-tracing support explanation.
Epic’s instructions for a Ray Tracing option and DirectX 12 are for PC. They are not steps to follow on PS5. Epic also warns that ray tracing significantly reduces frame rates on PC; that warning does not establish a PS5 setting or performance figure.
What the 120 FPS setting changes
If you were looking for a setting to make gameplay smoother, Fortnite’s separate 120 FPS Mode may be relevant. Epic’s PS5 setup requires the console’s Performance Mode game preset, followed by enabling 120 FPS Mode in Fortnite’s Video settings if the option is available. A compatible TV and AV setup also matters, and unsupported 4K at 120 Hz may affect output resolution. Follow Epic’s PS5 and Xbox 120 FPS instructions.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- On PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets and select Performance Mode.
- Launch Fortnite, open Settings > Video, and turn on 120 FPS Mode if it appears.
If Fortnite does not show the 120 FPS option, Epic says it is not available for that setup. It is not a way to switch Lumen on or off.
Why 120 FPS can affect advanced graphics features
There is a tradeoff if you want the listed advanced HDR graphics features: Epic says to turn 120 FPS Mode off to make Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps, and Temporal Super Resolution HDR features available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The setting therefore concerns a choice between the high-frame-rate mode and those features, not a hidden ray-tracing toggle. See Epic’s HDR troubleshooting guidance.
