Usually, no. PlayStation Store’s standard policy allows a game or add-on to be canceled within 14 days only if downloading or streaming has not started. If the PS5 game has begun downloading or streaming, it is generally not refundable unless the content is faulty. Your account country can also give you rights beyond the standard policy.
The rule that decides most PS5 game refunds
PlayStation uses two conditions for a normal digital-game cancellation: the request must be made within 14 days of purchase, and the game must not have started downloading or streaming. Both conditions matter. Being inside the 14-day period does not make a game refundable after its download has begun.

The Canadian PlayStation Store cancellation policy states that games or add-ons started downloading or streaming are not eligible for a refund unless they are faulty. The UK policy uses the same core rule.

The restriction is tied to the start of delivery, not to whether you actually launched the game or played it. If the PS5 began downloading the game, or you started streaming it, the ordinary change-of-mind route is normally closed. Pausing the download, deleting the game, or leaving it unplayed does not restore the standard eligibility condition.

The 14-day period is necessary but not sufficient
A purchase made yesterday can still be ineligible if its download or stream started. Conversely, a purchase that has not been downloaded or streamed can fall outside the standard route once 14 days have passed. The policy is therefore a combination of timing and delivery status rather than a simple two-week return window.

How to check and submit a normal cancellation
PlayStation’s support instructions start from the purchase record rather than from the PS5 game tile. Use the account that bought the game and find the transaction in the PlayStation Store.
- Open PlayStation Store Order details. Sign in to the same PlayStation Network account used for the purchase, then open the order or transaction details.
- Select the PS5 game transaction. Check that the item, purchase date and account are correct. The cancellation request must be attached to the actual transaction, not to a different edition or a separate DLC purchase.
- Choose “Cancel Purchase” if it appears. PlayStation displays this option only when the transaction is treated as eligible by its automated process. Select it and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the transaction details and any confirmation message until the money has been returned or Support has finished reviewing the request.
If “Cancel Purchase” is missing, the automated route is not confirming eligibility. That can happen because the download or stream has started, the request is outside the standard time window, the item is not being treated as an eligible game or add-on, or account-region rules require a different process. Do not assume that reinstalling or deleting the game will change the transaction status; contact PlayStation instead.

What changes when the downloaded game is faulty?
Faulty content is the principal policy exception for a game that has already started downloading or streaming. The Canadian and UK policies preserve a possible refund route in that situation, but they do not promise an automatic refund for every technical complaint. PlayStation can assess the issue under the rules that apply to your account country.
Describe the defect precisely
When you contact Support, explain what the game does, when the problem occurs and whether the problem is repeatable. For example, distinguish a game that repeatedly fails to launch from a game that launches but has a single isolated error. Include the title and edition, the date of purchase, the transaction details and the PS5 account used. Keep screenshots, error codes and other records if they are available, but do not alter them or claim a defect you cannot reproduce.
Use Support when the automated option is unavailable
PlayStation directs customers to PlayStation Support or its online assistant when the Order details process does not resolve the request. Tell the agent that downloading or streaming has started and that you are requesting a review because the content is faulty. A clear description helps Support distinguish a defect claim from an ordinary change-of-mind request.

The exact remedy can depend on the account’s country, the nature of the fault and applicable consumer law. A Support review is therefore the appropriate next step rather than repeatedly submitting the same cancellation form.

Country and consumer-law differences
PlayStation’s standard language is not the only rule that can apply. The UK cancellation policy expressly says that customers may have additional rights under applicable local law. The same principle matters for other account regions: the country associated with the account can affect cancellation rights, remedies for faulty digital content and the procedure Support follows.
The Canadian, UK and Ireland policy pages describe the same central downloaded-content restriction, but that does not make every country’s legal result identical. A reader in another region should check the PlayStation Store terms for that country and rely on the account region, not the location of the console or the country where the player is traveling.

If local law gives a stronger remedy for defective digital content, tell Support that you are making the request under the rights applicable to your account country. Keep the wording factual and provide the purchase record so the agent can route the case correctly.
How refunds are paid and how long they take
PlayStation’s refund FAQ says you may receive a refund in 10 days. That is a processing estimate, not a guarantee that every bank or card will display the credit on exactly the tenth day. After PlayStation approves the refund, the time shown in your statement can also depend on the payment provider.

PlayStation says refunds are sent to the original payment method where possible. Purchases made with wallet-fund vouchers are an exception to that general path, so the result can differ from a card or other direct payment. Check the method used for the transaction before contacting your bank about a missing credit.

Common PS5 refund questions answered
“I downloaded the wrong game. Can I return it?”
Usually not through the ordinary cancellation policy. If the download has started, an accidental purchase or wrong title is normally treated as a change of mind, even when the game has not been launched. You can still check Order details, but the standard 14-day cancellation condition requires that downloading or streaming has not started. If the transaction is not eligible, Support may explain whether any country-specific right applies; do not represent a mistaken purchase as a fault.
“I downloaded it but never opened it. Does that help?”
Not under the standard rule. The relevant event is the start of downloading or streaming, not the first launch, play time or trophy activity. An unplayed game whose download began is generally ineligible unless it is faulty or another legal right applies.
“I only streamed the game. Is streaming treated differently?”
No. The policy refers to downloading or streaming. Starting a stream can therefore remove the normal cancellation eligibility in the same way as starting a download.

PlayStation’s refund checklist treats full games, DLC and season passes as games or downloadable content for this purpose. The same two standard checklist conditions apply: the content has not been downloaded or streamed, and the request is within 14 days of purchase. A faulty add-on can be raised with Support under the exception for faulty content.
“What if I bought the game more than 14 days ago but never downloaded it?”
The purchase is outside the standard checklist once the 14-day period has ended. You can ask Support to review the transaction, especially if you believe local law provides an additional right, but the ordinary policy does not promise a cancellation after that deadline.
Troubleshooting a rejected or missing refund option
- Confirm the account. A family member or a second PSN account may have made the purchase. Order details must be opened on the purchasing account.
- Check the item type. Verify whether you are requesting a refund for the full game, an add-on or a season pass, and select the matching transaction.
- Review delivery status. A download may have started automatically through a console setting or remote installation. Streaming also counts, even if no local game file remains.
- Check the purchase date. The standard window is measured from the purchase, so keep the receipt or transaction record available.
- Look for “Cancel Purchase.” If the option is absent, move to PlayStation Support or the online assistant rather than repeatedly refreshing the Store.
- Separate a fault from preference. Explain a reproducible technical defect as a defect; dissatisfaction with the genre, performance preference or an accidental selection is normally a change-of-mind request.
- Record the case. Save the support conversation, case number, transaction ID and any requested evidence.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the country attached to the purchasing PlayStation account.
- Find the transaction in PlayStation Store Order details.
- Ask whether downloading or streaming has started. If it has not, continue to the next check; if it has, the normal route is generally closed.
- Check whether the purchase is within 14 days.
- If both standard conditions are met, select “Cancel Purchase” and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If delivery started but the content is genuinely faulty, gather the purchase details and defect information, then contact PlayStation Support or use the online assistant.
- After approval, allow up to 10 days for PlayStation’s processing estimate and monitor the original payment method, remembering that wallet-funded purchases may be handled differently.
Bottom line
Downloading or streaming a PS5 game usually ends the standard PlayStation Store refund option, even when the purchase is less than 14 days old and the game was never played. A game or add-on that has not begun downloading or streaming can generally be submitted through Order details within 14 days. If the downloaded content is faulty, contact PlayStation Support and describe the defect; local law and the account’s country can change the final result.
