Usually, no. Nintendo of America says it cannot provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases, and Nintendo’s United States digital-products policy says Nintendo Account payments are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one.
You should still contact the Nintendo Support team for the country or region tied to your Nintendo Account as soon as possible. Support can review the transaction, but Nintendo’s published policies do not promise approval, a courtesy exception, a processing deadline, or a particular refund method.

What Nintendo’s published rules say
The rule depends on the region of the Nintendo Account and the terms that apply to that purchase. A game bought through Nintendo eShop is digital content, so ordinary store-return expectations do not necessarily apply once the transaction is accepted.

Nintendo of America’s support guidance specifically lists “Wrong Game, Didn’t Like Game, Accidental Purchase.” It says downloaded-game and downloadable-content purchases cannot be refunded or exchanged when the purchase was a mistake. That wording covers common cases such as selecting the wrong title, buying the wrong edition, or confirming a purchase unintentionally.

United States: payments are final unless an exception applies
Nintendo’s United States digital-products policy states that, except when Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one, payments made through Nintendo Account services are final and non-refundable. The same policy covers pre-purchases and subscription payments, although this article concerns an eShop game or DLC bought by mistake.
That exception language matters. It does not turn an accidental purchase into an automatic refund, but it means the published rule is not intended to override a mandatory right under the law that applies to your transaction.
United Kingdom: immediate digital performance can end cancellation rights
Nintendo’s United Kingdom terms say it cannot provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases or for games a customer does not like. The terms also explain that, when you buy digital content in Nintendo eShop, you consent to Nintendo beginning performance immediately, before the cancellation period ends, and acknowledge that you lose the right to cancel at that point.

In practical terms, the UK wording treats the start of digital delivery as significant. A request based only on not wanting the game anymore is therefore unlikely to fit the published policy.
Japan: non-download and non-use do not create a return right
Nintendo’s Japanese notice says purchased downloaded products cannot be returned, refunded, or transferred. It expressly says this applies even if the product has not been downloaded or used. Leaving a game unopened, deleting it from the console, or deciding not to start it does not by itself cancel the purchase under that notice.

What to do after an accidental purchase
Act promptly, but do not assume speed guarantees a refund. The following process gives support the information it needs and avoids turning a simple mistake into an inaccurate claim.

- Stop using the purchase while you collect the details. Do not download, launch or continue playing the game while preparing your request if you can avoid it. This does not create a refund right, but it keeps your description accurate. Do not delete the game believing deletion reverses the charge; Nintendo’s Japanese notice specifically says non-use does not make a purchase refundable.
- Identify the Nintendo Account. Note the email address or account ID connected with the eShop transaction. If several family members use the console, confirm which account actually made the purchase rather than relying only on the console profile name.
- Gather the transaction record. Have the game or DLC title, purchase date, amount paid, order or receipt number and the Nintendo Account country or region ready. A receipt email, account transaction history or payment record can help support locate the correct order.
- Use the regional Nintendo Support team. Select the support channel for the country or region assigned to the account. Nintendo’s own guidance directs customers who need additional assistance to contact Nintendo. A support agent cannot apply the policy for a different region, so do not substitute another country’s terms for your account’s terms.
- Describe the event precisely. Say whether you selected the wrong title, bought a duplicate, chose the wrong version or edition, or had an unauthorized child purchase. If the problem is an accidental confirmation, say that plainly. Do not describe the game as defective unless there is an actual technical defect; an inaccurate defect claim can make the request harder to assess.
- Ask what remedy is available under the applicable policy. You can ask Nintendo to review the transaction and explain whether any refund or other remedy is available. Phrase the request as a review, not as an entitlement that the published policy has already granted.
- Raise legal rights separately when relevant. If you live in a jurisdiction with mandatory digital-content protections, tell support the country involved and ask how those rights apply. The United States policy expressly leaves room for refunds required by applicable law, but it does not identify every situation in which such a requirement would apply.
A clear message you can send to support
Keep the first message short and factual so the agent can match it to the transaction:

Use the bracketed fields only as a template and replace them with your actual information. If you bought the wrong game, do not imply that the title is faulty. If a child made the purchase without permission, state that fact and identify the account used; do not call it fraud unless that is genuinely what occurred.

What Nintendo has not promised
No official policy cited here publishes an approval rate for accidental purchases. Nintendo also does not promise a one-time courtesy refund, a guaranteed exception for an unused game, a standard number of days for a decision, or a fixed processing time. An agent may review an individual request, but the published rules do not guarantee a favorable outcome.
Several common assumptions are therefore unsafe:
- “I have not downloaded it, so the refund is automatic.” Japan’s notice expressly rejects that assumption, and the other regional material does not create an automatic unused-purchase refund.
- “Deleting the game cancels the order.” Removing software from the console does not undo the eShop transaction.
- “Nintendo always grants one courtesy refund.” No cited official source promises a one-time exception.
- “A refund will arrive within a published number of days.” The cited guidance does not provide a standard decision or payment timetable.
- “The rules are identical worldwide.” North American, US, UK and Japanese notices use different wording, so the account region matters.
How to handle common mistake types
Wrong game or wrong edition
Identify exactly what you intended to buy and what was actually charged. A wrong title or edition fits the mistaken-purchase category described by Nintendo of America, so present it as a selection error rather than a complaint about the game’s quality.
Duplicate purchase
List both transaction dates or order numbers and explain which purchase was intentional. Do not assume that owning the same content twice creates a refund right; ask support to review the duplicate charge under the account’s regional terms.

Unauthorized child purchase
State that a child or another household member used the account without permission, and provide the account and transaction details. Keep the explanation accurate and ask support what options exist. The cited policies do not promise a special child-purchase refund.
Purchase made before downloading
Tell support that the content has not been downloaded if that is true, but do not present that fact as an automatic cancellation. Japan’s official notice says the no-refund rule applies even before download or use, while the other regional material likewise does not promise a pre-download return.
If support says no
Ask the agent to identify the regional policy applied to the transaction and to explain whether any applicable-law exception was considered. Keep the case number and written correspondence. If you believe a mandatory consumer right applies, obtain advice specific to your country and the purchase circumstances rather than relying on a rule from another Nintendo region.

Do not misrepresent the reason for the purchase or repeatedly submit contradictory explanations. A precise record of the account, order, amount, date and mistake gives you the clearest basis for any further review.
Bottom line for a mistaken Switch eShop purchase
The published baseline is that an accidental Nintendo eShop game or DLC purchase is not refundable. Your practical option is to contact the correct regional Nintendo Support team promptly with complete transaction information, explain exactly what happened and ask how the policy and any mandatory local rights apply. Treat a refund as discretionary unless your jurisdiction gives you a separate legal entitlement.
