Roblox says it scans the complete equipped avatar when it changes and may reset a violating avatar by unequipping its items. Account restrictions are a separate possible outcome under Roblox’s broader moderation policy.
How Roblox checks an outfit
Roblox announced that it automatically scans avatars whenever they are changed, evaluating the equipped items together rather than judging each item only on its own. An item that is acceptable by itself can contribute to a combination that violates policy. Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman described the approach in the January 29, 2026 Safety Snapshot.
For example, Roblox said a black suit, armband, and mustache might each be allowed separately, while the complete look could resemble Adolf Hitler and violate policy. The overall presentation matters, not just whether each piece passed moderation individually.
If Roblox detects a violating avatar, it says it may reset the avatar by unequipping all avatar items and notify the user of the policy involved. Kaufman said Roblox users updated their avatars an average of 274 million times a day in 2025; that figure describes the scale of avatar changes, not the number of violations or bans.

Avatar reset versus account ban
| Outcome | What it affects | What Roblox says |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar reset | The equipped avatar and its items | Roblox may unequip all avatar items after detecting a violating avatar and send a notice identifying the policy involved. Roblox Newsroom |
| Account-level restriction | Access to or use of the account | Roblox’s moderation framework allows consequences ranging from warnings and content removal to account-level restrictions. Severity, impact, and prior behavior can affect enforcement. Roblox Support |
Roblox does not say that every outfit issue results in an account ban or publish a guaranteed penalty for each avatar scenario. Repeated violations may lead to more serious consequences, but the specific outcome depends on the circumstances and Roblox’s moderation decision.
What avatar outfit rules can apply?
Roblox’s Marketplace policy says avatar bodies must not be sexually suggestive or depict or suggest nudity in genital areas, and sets modesty-layer requirements. It also says accessories and clothing are moderated under the Misusing Roblox Systems Community Standard. These are examples of rules that can matter; they are not a complete list of every standard that may apply to an avatar or its overall appearance.

What to do if Roblox moderates your outfit
- Read the Roblox notification. An avatar-reset notice identifies the policy Roblox says was violated. For other moderation actions, check the notice for the appeal option available to your case.
- Use the appeal route in the notice. Eligible cases may be appealed through Violations & Appeals; other cases may use the Roblox Support form. The appeal guidance says Roblox will review an appeal, but it does not guarantee the moderation action will be reversed.
- Check the deadline and regional terms. Roblox Support states that an appeal must be filed within 30 days of the moderation action. Regional rules may provide different time limits, so follow the deadline and instructions shown for your case and location.
How to report someone else’s avatar
If you see an avatar that appears to violate Roblox rules, use the reporting guidance for reporting and blocking. Roblox explains how to report avatar violations outside experiences as well as behavior within them.
