Yes—but not simply for owning or using a macro-capable device. Bungie’s policy focuses on whether an external tool enables accessibility or instead automates intended gameplay, bypasses idle detection, or gives a player an advantage. The policy update behind the “can now” framing was announced in August 2024, not as a new 2026 rule.
What Bungie’s policy says
Bungie defines an external accessibility aide as a device or input that augments a player’s control beyond what the game normally provides. Its examples include programmable controllers, keyboard-and-mouse adapters, advanced macros, and AI automation. Features provided by Bungie itself are excluded from this definition. See Bungie’s Destiny 2 restrictions and banning policies for the current wording.
The policy does not treat all such tools as automatically prohibited. Bungie states: “simply using an accessibility aide to play Destiny 2, where a player could not play otherwise, would not be a violation of this policy.” The relevant distinction is what the tool does and how it affects play.
Which macro uses can lead to a ban?
Bungie says tools may violate the policy when they automate challenges intended for players or alter the challenge in ways that produce an advantage. Its examples include reducing recoil or increasing aim assist—limits that apply to all players. Bungie defines gaining an advantage as using a tool with the intent, directly or indirectly, to achieve victory. It also warns that advantages in PvE can carry over into PvP, and says gameplay is evaluated for policy violations.

Automation that bypasses idle detection or performs activities to earn rewards is also explicitly in scope. Bungie names XP, materials, and drops—including Exotic class items—as examples of loot that can be earned through prohibited automation. A macro that plays or farms while the player is away is therefore materially different from an accessibility aid that lets the player participate.
How to assess a particular setup
Bungie publishes criteria and examples, not a list of approved third-party devices or safe macro profiles. A programmable controller or adapter is not automatically safe because of its brand or product category; nor does the presence of macro features by itself establish a violation. Consider the setup’s function, effect, and reward behavior:

These questions reflect Bungie’s stated criteria; they are not a test that guarantees a configuration is permitted. If a particular device profile is uncertain, the controlling reference is Bungie’s policy. The official page does not provide a device-by-device ruling.
What changed in August 2024?
In its August 22, 2024 This Week in Destiny post, Bungie said it had updated its restriction and ban policies earlier that week to address AFK macros. The announcement emphasized automated reward earning, acknowledged accessibility benefits, and said Bungie would rather hear feedback about difficult reward paths than have players bypass them with automation.

Bungie said in that announcement it did not plan to issue retroactive restrictions or bans for the policy change, and that actions related to the change would be for future infractions. It also said players using macros for accessibility should not be actioned upon. Those statements describe Bungie’s announcement at that time; they are not a guarantee about every future case or an individual configuration.
Bungie’s conduct guidance also lists abuse of external accessibility tools as conduct that may result in a ban or restriction. That is consistent with a policy focused on abusive use rather than the mere existence of an accessibility device. See the conduct and enforcement guidance.

What a restriction or ban can mean
Bungie distinguishes account bans from device bans. An account ban bars that account from affected activities. A device ban blocks Destiny play on the banned hardware regardless of which account is used. Repeat offenses may escalate to permanent account or hardware bans, and Bungie says an egregious violation can result in a permanent ban on a first offense.
