You can’t obtain Cleaving through a documented route in ordinary vanilla Survival, based on the official Minecraft release materials checked. Microsoft Learn does describe Cleaving as an axe enchantment, but its page is for creators building custom enchanted items—not proof that players can find or apply it in Survival.
What is Cleaving in Minecraft?
Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock stable creator documentation describes Cleaving as an axe enchantment that increases melee damage and extends how long a shield stays disabled after a melee attack. The page was last updated January 30, 2025, and covers enchantments and creating custom enchanted items. Its listing explains the enchantment’s intended effect in that context; it does not document an ordinary Survival acquisition method. Microsoft Learn: Enchantment List

Can you get Cleaving in vanilla Survival?
No documented ordinary Survival method appears in the official release materials checked. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21 notes identify Density, Breach, and Wind Burst as the three mace-exclusive enchantments added in that release, and do not list Cleaving. That means the official sources checked do not establish Cleaving as obtainable from an enchanting table, a villager, loot, or another Survival source. They also do not establish a current command or server configuration for obtaining it. Avoid treating an instruction for any of those routes as verified unless it is backed by reliable information for your specific edition and version.

Why is Cleaving listed if it isn’t available?
The name appears in Microsoft Learn’s creator documentation because the page describes enchantments and how creators can use enchantment components to make custom enchanted items. That is different from a Mojang release note documenting an enchantment shipped for ordinary play. In other words, the creator listing explains Cleaving’s axe effect; it does not show that players can acquire it in Survival.
Do Minecraft combat snapshots add Cleaving?
No. Combat snapshots are experimental, manually installed builds, not ordinary game releases. Mojang’s Combat Test Snapshot v5 notes call its experimental axe enchantment “Chopping,” not Cleaving. Combat Test Snapshot v5 notes Mojang’s Java Snapshot 24w13a notes discuss Density, Breach, and Wind Burst, but do not document Cleaving as part of that group. Java Snapshot 24w13a notes Experimental material should not be taken as evidence that an enchantment is obtainable in the current ordinary release.

What should you do if you want Cleaving?
If you are playing standard vanilla Survival, there is no documented acquisition step to follow. If you saw Cleaving in an enchantment reference, check whether that reference is describing creator tools or a custom setup rather than ordinary gameplay. The official sources checked do not establish a vanilla command or configuration that enables it, so a specific command or setup should not be assumed to work.
