What counts as passive income in Skyrim?
Players usually mean one of three things: gold generated over time that they can collect later, periodic gold paid through an NPC, or simply a merchant who can afford to buy more loot. Those are different mechanics. In particular, more money in a shop is not a payment to your character.
Options that can provide recurring gold
Spouse shop
The merchant reference lists spouses as merchants at the household, making a spouse shop a potential source of recurring income. The available documentation does not establish a universal payout amount or collection schedule, so treat it as a small convenience rather than a predictable salary.
Goldenhills Plantation
Goldenhills Plantation is associated with the Farming Creation Club content included with Anniversary Edition. It is the farm-focused route to consider if you want a role-play farm or a lower-maintenance source of gold. Exact earnings and payout timing are not established here, so a specific gold-per-day figure would be misleading. Edition packaging and platform availability can vary; check that the relevant content is installed if the plantation does not appear in your game.

Investor helps sell loot; it does not pay you
The Investor perk increases the available gold at shops where you invest. That can make selling valuable loot easier when merchants run out of cash, but you still have to trade with them to receive gold. It does not create a recurring deposit or pay you while you are away adventuring.
Do Hearthfire homes generate income?
Owning a standard Hearthfire homestead should not be treated as an automatic passive-income mechanic. Bethesda Support explains that buying a plot requires earning the relevant Jarl’s trust and receiving a letter; the available land-access instructions do not document automatic gold payments from owning the property.

To pursue a Hearthfire plot, first earn the trust of the Jarl in the hold where you want land—Falkreath, Hjaalmarch, or Dawnstar—and receive the required letter. The specific favors or quests vary by hold. These requirements unlock land purchase; they are not an income setup.

- You want recurring or farm-themed gold: Look into Goldenhills Plantation if your installed edition includes the Farming content, while keeping expectations modest because a verified yield is not established.
- You want a household shop: A spouse merchant is an option, but do not rely on an assumed fixed payout or schedule.
- You want to sell more loot in fewer trips: Investor is the relevant perk; it increases shop buying capacity rather than generating income.
- You want a home: Hearthfire land is a property route, not evidence of automatic passive payments.
