Yes. In Pokémon GO, Trainers at level 31 or above can receive Candy XL by walking with a Buddy, but an ordinary Buddy walking reward does not guarantee an XL Candy. Set the Pokémon whose Candy XL you want as your Buddy and earn its regular walking Candy; Candy XL may accompany that reward.
How walking can give you Candy XL
- Set the Pokémon from the evolutionary line you want to power up as your Buddy.
- Walk until you reach that species’ Buddy Candy distance. The distance varies: The Pokémon Company lists examples in 1 km, 3 km, 5 km, and 20 km bands in its Buddy Adventure guide. These are distances for ordinary Buddy Candy, not a stated Candy XL drop rate.
- When the walking reward is earned, you may also receive Candy XL if you meet the level requirement. Niantic lists Buddy walking as one activity that can produce Candy XL, but does not publish a numeric chance per reward in its Powering Up Pokémon help page.
Who can collect Candy XL?
You must be Trainer level 31 or above to begin collecting Candy XL, according to Niantic’s Powering Up Pokémon help page. Candy XL belongs to a Pokémon’s evolutionary line and is used to power that Pokémon to higher CP.
Does an excited Buddy make XL Candy arrive faster?
An Excited Buddy reduces the walking distance required to collect Buddy Candy, as described in Niantic’s Buddy Adventure help page. This can make the walking reward interval shorter; it does not guarantee Candy XL or establish a higher XL drop chance. When your Buddy is on the map, the Good Buddy “Adventure with Buddy” perk also reduces the distance for earning Candy.
Can an event increase Candy XL from walking?
Some event bonuses can add Candy XL for Buddy walking temporarily. For example, the official Precious Pals announcement offered additional Candy XL when walking with a Buddy from January 20 through January 25, 2026, local time. That event has ended; check the current event announcement in-game or on Pokémon GO’s official channels for any active walking bonus.

Do you need a Poké Ball Plus?
No. Buddy walking is an in-game mechanic, and the Poké Ball Plus is optional. Pokémon Support says that a Poké Ball Plus connected to Pokémon GO measures travel distance for Buddy Candy and Egg progress in its Poké Ball Plus support article. That page does not say the accessory guarantees Candy XL; it only relates to tracking distance.

- Niantic’s cited help pages do not state a numeric Candy XL chance for each Buddy walking reward.
- The available official sources do not establish a universal daily limit for Candy XL earned through Buddy walking.
- The listed 1 km, 3 km, 5 km, and 20 km distances describe ordinary Buddy Candy intervals, not XL Candy odds.
