Spoilers for an Act III story event: If your original horse is lost in the story, you cannot get that same horse back as your permanent mount. Continue the main story to the Act III mission Heart of the Jito, where Yuna presents another horse for you to choose and name. The horse used before then is temporary, not a return of your original mount.
Story loss is different from a horse running away in combat
During ordinary gameplay, your horse can be frightened and run off briefly. Sucker Punch creative director Jason Connell told GameSpot, “Your horse is not gonna die,” explaining that combat may scare the horse away temporarily but does not kill it: GameSpot’s report. That statement concerns combat gameplay, not the later scripted story event.

The original horse is lost in a scripted sequence near the start of Act III. It is a story beat, rather than a consequence of enemies attacking your horse during normal play.
How to get another permanent horse
- Continue the main story after the scripted loss. You will ride an interim horse before the next permanent choice; it is not your original horse returned.
- Play through Act III until Heart of the Jito.
- After writing a letter to Lord Shimura, follow Yuna. She presents another samurai horse for you to choose and name, according to the GameFAQs walkthrough.
Can you restore the original horse?
The documented story sequence offers a different horse to choose and name; it does not describe a way to restore the original one. The available sources do not establish a workaround for getting that same horse back, so do not mistake the interim mount or the later choice for recovery of your original horse.

Why the horse choice matters
PlayStation’s official Q&A with Sucker Punch describes Jin’s horse as his journey partner and confirms that players choose a horse early in the game. That early choice makes the story loss feel personal, but it does not change the later outcome: the story gives you another named horse rather than returning the original.
