Yes, historically—but only in a limited sense. Citra could emulate Nintendo 3DS local wireless multiplayer between Citra instances over the internet. It did not connect to Nintendo’s online servers. Citra support was discontinued in 2024, and archived documentation does not confirm whether community room servers are operating now.
What “online” means in Citra
Citra’s archived FAQ answered the question “Does Citra support Wi-Fi, network connectivity or online play?” with a qualified yes: it supported networked local Wi-Fi, but not connections to Nintendo’s servers. The FAQ is preserved in an archive dated March 4, 2024: Citra FAQ.

The distinction is between using the internet as a route for local wireless multiplayer and signing in to Nintendo’s online services. Citra’s multiplayer documentation described its feature as emulating local wireless multiplayer over the internet: players could join a multiplayer room, with a host running the room server and clients exchanging game data through it. That setup did not provide access to Nintendo’s servers or reproduce every official online feature. A game’s local wireless mode and its Nintendo-server features are not interchangeable.

Does Citra online multiplayer still work?
Citra announced that support for the project was discontinued effective immediately in 2024, with its repositories and websites to be taken offline. The announcement is preserved at Citra’s project announcement.
The archived documentation explains how the feature was designed, but it is not a current service-status page. It does not establish whether a particular community room server is online today, whether a given game works with current infrastructure, or whether a usable public lobby is available.
