The bot normally keeps an outbound connection to Discord, so it does not need to claim the website’s public port.

Why a bot and website can coexist on one VPS
A VPS has one operating system, network interface and public IP, but it can run many independent services. Port numbers identify listening sockets, not entire servers. If your reverse proxy owns ports 80 and 443 while the website listens on 127.0.0.1:3000 and the bot runs as a different process, there is no port collision.

Discord bots generally connect outward to Discord’s gateway and HTTP APIs. That connection is initiated by the bot, so a public inbound port is not required for normal command handling, events or scheduled tasks. A website or dashboard is different: browsers need an inbound HTTP or HTTPS endpoint. The reverse proxy provides that endpoint and forwards requests to the private application port.
This arrangement also limits the blast radius of failures. A website restart should not terminate the bot, and a bot deployment should not require taking the web server offline. Discord.Net deployment guidance describes a remote VPS as a practical way to keep a bot online continuously and notes that a low-cost VPS can be enough for small- to medium-scale bots. Red Discord Bot’s hosting documentation likewise supports Linux or Windows VPSs, recommends Linux, and characterizes a dedicated server as unnecessary unless the bot is unusually large or the machine has other substantial workloads.

A practical single-VPS architecture

Purgito documents this pattern with Nginx at the edge, a systemd-managed Python process and an HTTP API bound to 127.0.0.1; its documentation explicitly notes that no Python socket is exposed directly to the public internet. Sylo documents another option: one Node process can contain both a Discord bot and a web dashboard, with Docker Compose and a configurable dashboard port. Combining code in one process is possible, but separate services are usually easier to restart, update and troubleshoot.
How to deploy both services step by step
1. Prepare the VPS and a service account
- Choose a current Linux distribution supported by your bot and web framework. Create a non-root administrator, add SSH keys, and apply all operating-system updates.
- Create an application directory with separate subdirectories such as
/srv/discord-botand/srv/website. Give each service only the filesystem permissions it needs. - Install the runtime required by each project (for example, Node.js, Python or .NET), plus your reverse proxy and any database package you intentionally run on the same machine.
Do not assume that a provider’s smallest plan has enough disk for logs, a database and build artifacts. Leave free space for updates and temporary files.
2. Bind the website to a private port
Configure the web framework to listen on a local address rather than all interfaces. A generic environment configuration looks like this:

PORT=3000Some frameworks default to 0.0.0.0. Change that default when the application is not meant to be reached directly. If the website and reverse proxy run in separate containers, bind the application to the container network and publish only the proxy’s ports to the host.
3. Put the reverse proxy on 80 and 443
The proxy should be the only internet-facing HTTP service. A minimal Nginx server block for a site at example.com can forward traffic to a local application:

}Enable HTTPS with a certificate issued for your domain, then redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS. HELIX guidance recommends placing a public dashboard behind a reverse proxy with SSL termination and forwarding to a local application port. If the dashboard uses WebSockets for live bot status, add the proxy’s WebSocket upgrade headers and confirm that idle timeout settings suit the dashboard.
Use a separate hostname or path for additional applications, but keep every upstream on its own local port. Never configure two applications to listen on the same address and port.
4. Run the bot independently with systemd
A systemd unit gives the bot automatic startup and restart behavior without tying it to the website process. Adapt the executable and working directory to your framework:

Check status with systemctl status discord-bot and inspect recent output with journalctl -u discord-bot. A Node, .NET or compiled bot uses a different ExecStart, but the isolation principle is the same.
5. Keep credentials outside source control
Store the Discord token, database password, signing keys and other secrets in a root-readable environment file or a secrets facility. Restrict its permissions and ensure it is excluded from Git repositories, container images and public build logs. Rotate a token immediately if it appears in a commit, issue, screenshot or error message.

6. Add a database or cache privately
If the website and bot share data, let both services reach a database through localhost or an internal container network. Do not open the database port to the internet merely because two applications need it. Define migrations, persistent volumes and backup jobs before production traffic arrives. A database placed on the same VPS consumes the same CPU, memory, storage I/O and backup bandwidth as the bot and website.
7. Apply firewall and TLS rules
- Allow 80 and 443 for web traffic.
- Allow SSH only from trusted administration addresses or through your chosen access control.
- Block public access to application, database, cache and monitoring ports unless a specific feature requires them.
- Renew certificates automatically and test renewal before the existing certificate expires.
Then test the public domain, the local upstream and the bot separately. A successful website response does not prove that the bot authenticated, and a connected bot does not prove that the proxy or certificate is correct.
Docker Compose instead of systemd
Containers are useful when the bot and website have conflicting runtime dependencies or when you want repeatable deployments. Publish the website only through the proxy; leave the bot un-published:

- webIn this model, Nginx forwards to the Compose service name and port rather than to 127.0.0.1 on the host. Use named volumes for uploads, database files and certificates, and configure health checks so a container that is running but not responding can be restarted or flagged.
Will the bot and website conflict on ports?
They conflict only when two listeners claim the same IP address and port. A common safe allocation is:

- 80/443: reverse proxy and TLS.
- 3000: website framework on localhost or the private container network.
- 8080: an optional API or second dashboard.
- No bot port: the bot uses an outbound Discord connection unless you deliberately add a webhook or local control API.
To diagnose a suspected collision, list listening sockets with your operating system’s socket utility, then inspect each service’s configured host and port. If the website works locally but not through the domain, check proxy routing, DNS and TLS before changing the bot. If the bot fails at startup with an address-in-use error, it may include an optional HTTP health endpoint; assign that endpoint a different private port.
How much VPS capacity do you need?
There is no universal CPU or RAM number for “a Discord bot plus a website.” The documentation reviewed for this topic does not publish a benchmark that maps guild count or page views to a specific plan. Start with a small plan for a lightly used bot and simple site, then measure the real workload.

Compare plans by CPU share, RAM, SSD performance, transfer allowance, region, IPv4 and IPv6 availability, backup options, support and price. The Discord.Net guide’s “cheap VPS (~$5)” statement is an example for small-to-medium bots, not a current universal price or a capacity guarantee; verify live pricing and included resources in your region.
Audio processing, large caches, high guild counts, a busy database or sudden traffic can turn a comfortable small instance into a bottleneck. Resize when measurements show sustained pressure, not merely because a provider advertises a larger plan. A dedicated server is generally excessive for this combination unless the bot is very large or the host also runs other substantial workloads.

- Independent restarts: use separate systemd units or containers, each with an automatic restart policy.
- Health checks: expose a private health endpoint for the website and track bot gateway connection state.
- Log rotation: cap journal and application logs so an error loop cannot fill the disk.
- Backups: copy database and persistent files off the VPS and periodically test restoration.
- Staged deployments: build and validate a new website release before switching the proxy, and avoid restarting the bot during unrelated web changes.
- Resource controls: set sensible worker counts and container limits so a runaway web request or media job cannot consume all memory.
- Observability: alert on disk capacity, memory exhaustion, certificate expiry, repeated bot reconnects and elevated HTTP error rates.
Separating processes does not create infinite resources. If both services compete for all available memory, the operating system can terminate either one. Monitoring and limits are what make co-hosting dependable.

Security checklist for a shared VPS
- Keep the operating system, reverse proxy, runtimes, libraries and bot framework patched.
- Bind internal services to localhost or a private network and verify that firewall rules match the intended exposure.
- Terminate HTTPS at the proxy and forward the original host and protocol headers correctly.
- Use least-privilege service accounts; do not run the bot and web application as root.
- Protect Discord tokens, OAuth secrets, database credentials and signing keys outside source control.
- Review proxy access logs and bot logs for credential leakage, unexpected request paths and repeated failures.
- Back up persistent data and document how to rebuild the VPS if it becomes unavailable.
When one VPS is no longer the right boundary
Move one service to another VPS or a dedicated host when measurements show sustained CPU, memory, storage or network contention; when a bot’s availability requirements differ sharply from the website’s release schedule; or when a security boundary requires separate operating systems. A separate database can also help when database I/O dominates the application. Make that change in response to observed bottlenecks, compliance needs or failure-domain concerns, not because co-hosting is inherently unsafe.
Troubleshooting the most common failures
The domain returns a gateway error
Confirm that the website process is running and listening on the port named in proxy_pass. Test the upstream locally, then inspect Nginx’s error log. A wrong bind address, stopped service, blocked local port or mismatched container service name is more likely than a Discord-related problem.
The bot is offline after a website deployment
Check whether both applications were placed in one process or one container and restarted together. Split them into separate units, or deploy the web container independently, then inspect the bot’s service status and gateway authentication logs.
Ports appear open to the internet
Review listening sockets and firewall rules. Change the application bind address to localhost or the private container network, remove unnecessary host port mappings, and reload the firewall. Leave only the proxy’s web ports and restricted administration access exposed.
The VPS runs out of memory
Identify the process consuming memory, including the database and proxy. Reduce worker counts or cache sizes, fix leaks, rotate logs, and resize when usage remains high under normal load. Do not treat swap as a substitute for adequate RAM; it can keep a service alive while making response times unacceptable.

Bottom line
One VPS is a sound default for a Discord bot and a website when the services have separate processes or containers, private application ports, a reverse proxy on 80/443, protected secrets, backups and independent restart policies. Begin with a modest plan, measure CPU, memory, storage, transfer and latency, and split the workloads only when their actual demands or reliability requirements justify the extra infrastructure.
