Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can’t make original PS2 discs or original Xbox games run on a PS5 by changing performance settings or connecting a different controller: Sony’s published backward-compatibility guidance covers supported PS4 games, not those older libraries. The practical options are title-specific PS2 versions or streaming access through PlayStation Plus, or a separate Xbox Series X|S for select original Xbox games.
Why PS2 and original Xbox games do not run on PS5
Sony documents PS5 backward compatibility for supported PS4 games; it does not document native support for original PS2 discs or original Xbox games. As a result, there is no established PS5 graphics setting, performance mode, controller mapping, or adapter that makes those games playable on the console. A controller can provide input to compatible software, but it cannot add game compatibility.
Sony also cautions that some PS4 titles may show errors or behave unexpectedly on PS5. The compatibility boundary is therefore the supported game list, not a general guarantee for every older PlayStation title. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance covers PS4 games.
Ways to play selected PS2 games on a PS5
Check for a PS5 remaster or remake
Sony says certain PS2 games are available as remastered or remake versions that can be downloaded on PS4 and PS5. These are specific published versions, not a way to use an arbitrary PS2 disc. Look up the exact game in the PlayStation Store for your region and confirm that the listed version supports PS5.

- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Check the PlayStation Plus classics catalog
Some original PS2 games can be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium in select markets. Catalog titles, regional availability, and required subscription access vary, so check the current listing for your country before subscribing. Streaming is not native disc support; the game must be offered in the catalog. Sony explains the service’s game catalog and access options in its PlayStation Plus guide.
If you are streaming, connection quality matters more than a controller adapter. Sony’s Remote Play service streams access to games a compatible PS5 or PS4 can already play; it does not add PS2 compatibility. Sony also notes that some games, peripherals, and features have restrictions.

Ways to play selected original Xbox games
Microsoft offers backward compatibility for a select catalog of original Xbox games on Xbox Series X|S. This is a separate-console option, not a way to run those games on PS5. Check the exact title in Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog before choosing this route.
- Xbox Series X: A disc-based option for catalog games that you own on disc. Microsoft says a supported disc game downloads to the console and the disc must remain in the drive to play.
- Xbox Series S: Digital-only, so it cannot use original Xbox discs.
- Online features: Microsoft says original Xbox online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are not available through this backward-compatibility route.
Which controller works—and when?
Controller support depends on the game and the console running it. It does not determine whether a game is compatible in the first place.

| Software being played on PS5 | Controller guidance |
|---|---|
| PS5 game | DualSense is required. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says PS5 games are designed for the DualSense’s features. |
| Supported PS4 game on PS5 | DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4, and officially licensed third-party gamepads can work, subject to the game’s support. |
| Original PS2 disc or original Xbox game on PS5 | No controller can make the unsupported game run natively on PS5. |
Sony warns that not all officially licensed or third-party controllers work on PS5. Check compatibility with both the console and the specific game, and confirm with the controller manufacturer before buying. The current PlayStation controller support page describes the supported PS4-game case.
Sony’s separate guide to using a wireless controller covers certain Windows, Apple, and Android devices; it does not extend PS2 or original Xbox compatibility on PS5. Device compatibility and controller features vary.
