What’s the difference between cricket and baseball?
Both sports alternate between a team batting and a team fielding, but they organize those turns differently. In MLB, each half-inning normally ends after three outs. In international cricket, the format sets how many innings each team has and, in limited-overs matches, how many overs a batting side may face.
“Inning” is the standard baseball spelling; cricket uses “innings.” An over is a set of deliveries bowled by one player. It is not the same as a baseball inning or a fixed number of outs, so overs and innings are useful structural clues, not direct conversions between sports.
This comparison covers the International Cricket Council’s international formats—Test, One-Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I)—and Major League Baseball (MLB). Other cricket competitions and baseball leagues may use different playing conditions.

How are the formats structured?

The ICC describes the structures of its international formats on its formats page. MLB’s regulation-game rules describe the nine-inning structure and what happens when a game is tied.
How long does each game take?
For a quick comparison, the ICC says a T20 International usually takes three hours. That is a typical format-level description, not a guaranteed end time. By comparison, MLB reported that nine-inning games averaged 2 hours and 38 minutes through September 25, 2025. That figure is a seasonal average for MLB, not a rule or a prediction for an individual game.

These figures give a broad sense of scale, but they are different kinds of evidence: one is the ICC’s usual estimate for T20Is, and the other is MLB’s measured average for nine-inning games in a particular season through a stated date. They are not a controlled head-to-head timing test. Weather, stoppages and competition conditions can affect how long a match takes.
There is no single duration for “a cricket match.” The format matters: a T20I is commonly described in hours, an ODI has a 50-over limit per side, and a Test is scheduled across five days. Nor does MLB have a fixed clock duration: a regulation game is defined by innings, and a tie after nine sends play into extra innings.

What happens in a normal MLB game?
MLB regulation is nine innings. In each inning, both teams ordinarily have a turn to bat; the team in the field tries to record three outs to end the batting team’s half-inning. Across nine innings, the trailing team must have the opportunity to make 27 outs. The home team can win before batting in the bottom of the ninth, so that half may not be played.
If the score is tied after nine innings, the teams continue into extra innings until the tie is broken under MLB’s rules. As a result, nine innings is the normal regulation structure, not a fixed maximum length.

What happens in international cricket?
T20 International
Each team has one innings of up to 20 overs. The ICC says a T20 International usually takes three hours, but “usually” is not a time limit: the match can take longer, and an innings may end before its over allowance is used.
One-Day International
Each team has one innings of up to 50 overs. “One-Day” names the format; it does not make its structure equivalent to a nine-inning baseball game or establish a universal start-to-finish runtime.

Test
Each team has two innings in a five-day format. Five days is the scheduled format, not a promise that every Test uses every day. Unlike MLB’s tied game extending through extra innings, Test cricket’s structure is built around two innings per team and a multi-day schedule.
Who sets the rules for international cricket?
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) drafts and interprets the Laws of Cricket. For international matches, the ICC’s playing conditions can add provisions; competition conditions may therefore differ from the Laws alone.
