In the standard ARK: Survival Evolved rule described by the cited wiki pages, flying mounts cannot gain Movement Speed points after Patch 256. Putting level-up points into that stat does not make a normal flyer travel faster in flight. The legacy rule lists ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile as an exception, and custom servers or mods may behave differently.
The short answer: standard flyers cannot be leveled for more speed
For the ordinary, non-Mobile version of ARK: Survival Evolved, a flying mount cannot have its Movement Speed increased through level-up points under the rule introduced with Patch 256. If a Pteranodon, Argentavis, Quetzal or another flyer shows a Movement Speed stat that cannot be advanced, that is expected behavior rather than a broken character screen.

This answer concerns the mount’s own Movement Speed stat. Increasing your survivor’s Movement Speed does not transfer to a ridden creature, and the mount’s flight speed is not raised by spending points on the survivor. Likewise, the general Movement Speed rules for land creatures should not be applied automatically to flyers.
The legacy ARK: Survival Evolved Movement Speed entry identifies Mobile as an exception. That means the answer depends on the edition and platform you are playing. The cited material does not establish a universal rule for every unofficial server, mod, or custom configuration, so those environments need to be checked separately.

What changed in Patch 256?
The flyer restriction is tied to Patch 256 in the legacy game documentation. After that change, flying creatures could no longer receive additional Movement Speed through normal creature leveling. This is a separate rule from the later adjustment to the general Movement Speed stat.
Patch 259 changed a percentage, not the flyer restriction
The same legacy entry records a Patch 259 change in which the general per-point Movement Speed increase was reduced from 2% to 1.5%. That figure describes the broader Movement Speed mechanic; it is not evidence that standard flyers can once again be leveled for speed. Applying the 1.5% value to a non-Mobile flyer produces the wrong conclusion because the flyer restriction takes precedence.
Why older advice can conflict with what you see
Guides written before Patch 256 may describe putting points into a flyer’s Movement Speed. A player using an older version, a different edition, Mobile, or a modified server can therefore report results that do not match the standard post-Patch-256 behavior. When two reports disagree, compare the game edition, platform, patch or version, and whether the server uses default settings or modifications before deciding that one report is incorrect.

Movement Speed, flight speed and survivor speed are different things
“Movement speed” can refer to several separate mechanics in ARK discussions. Keeping them distinct prevents most confusion.
| What is being changed? | Does it make a standard flyer faster in flight? | What the cited rule establishes |
|---|---|---|
| A survivor’s Movement Speed stat | No | The survivor stat belongs to the player character; it does not change a mount’s speed. |
| A flying mount’s Movement Speed level | No, on standard non-Mobile settings after Patch 256 | Flying mounts cannot have Movement Speed increased by leveling under the cited rule. |
| The general Movement Speed percentage | Not for a standard flyer that cannot receive the stat | Patch 259 changed the general per-point value to 1.5%; this does not override the flyer restriction. |
| Imprinting a flyer | No confirmed speed increase under the cited flyer rule | The Pteranodon entry says flyers cannot gain Movement Speed from imprinting. |
| Mobile-specific behavior | Possibly, under the documented exception | The legacy Movement Speed entry explicitly names Mobile as an exception. |
| Unofficial server or mod settings | Not established by the cited pages | Custom configuration can only be answered by that server’s rules or an in-game test. |
The table’s “no” applies to the cited standard ARK: Survival Evolved rule, not to every game that uses the ARK name. Edition and configuration are essential qualifications.
What the Pteranodon information adds
The Pteranodon page result describes the flyer speed change and specifically says flyers cannot allocate Movement Speed levels or gain Movement Speed from imprinting. That gives two practical checks:
Rank #3
- Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dino herd
- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game. Run too far and not only will you be exhausted, but you will also quickly get hungry and thirsty. Weather effects are based on real-world climates, and so you'll need to hide out from rain and snow, while making the most of sunny days
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Gather Resources, Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes and style of everything from the walls of your home, to your character's armor, weapons and more
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout. Make your way to the final boss and figure out why you've been dropped into this Jurassic-era experience
- If the Movement Speed level-up option is unavailable on a standard flyer, that is consistent with the post-Patch-256 rule.
- If imprinting improves other attributes but does not raise flight speed, that is also consistent with the documented restriction.
This does not mean every flyer has identical handling. Species can differ in their base movement, stamina, weight, turning behavior and other attributes. It means that adding a Movement Speed level is not the normal way to make those flyers faster in flight.
How to identify which rule applies to your game
Before changing a build or blaming a server setting, establish the environment in which you are playing. Use this checklist:
- Confirm the edition. Determine whether you are playing the standard ARK: Survival Evolved release, Mobile, or another ARK edition. The documented Mobile exception means the platform matters.
- Check the patch or version. The restriction is associated with Patch 256, while Patch 259 separately changed the general Movement Speed percentage. A legacy guide may describe a pre-Patch-256 system.
- Identify the server type. Note whether the world is official, unofficial, modded or otherwise customized. The cited pages do not settle how every custom configuration handles flyer speed.
- Inspect the creature’s level-up screen. Look specifically for Movement Speed on the flying mount, not on your survivor. If the stat cannot be selected, do not spend points expecting a flight-speed increase.
- Check the mount’s imprinting context. The Pteranodon documentation says flyers do not gain Movement Speed from imprinting, so an imprint result that improves other attributes without increasing speed is not, by itself, evidence of a bug.
- Ask the server administrator for its rules. For an unofficial or modded world, the administrator can confirm whether a mod or setting changes the default restriction.
A reliable way to test a disputed speed claim
If another player says that Movement Speed works on your server, test the claim without mixing variables. Use two flyers of the same species and comparable condition, then change only the suspected factor. For example, compare a mount before and after an available Movement Speed allocation, or compare an unmodified world with the server’s documented setting. Keep the route, rider, terrain and direction consistent. Record whether the stat can actually be allocated and whether the observed travel time changes.

This procedure does not prove how every ARK version works; it tells you what your own configuration permits. A result that differs from the standard rule should be reported with the edition, platform, patch, server type and mod list, because those details determine whether the comparison is meaningful.

“My survivor has more Movement Speed, so the flyer should be faster”
The survivor and the mount have separate statistics. A faster-running survivor does not make a ridden flyer’s flight speed increase. Check the creature’s own stat and level-up options instead.

The 1.5% value belongs to the general Movement Speed change recorded for Patch 259. Standard flyers that cannot receive Movement Speed levels do not get that increase through ordinary leveling.
Best Value
“The imprint should make my Pteranodon faster”
The cited Pteranodon result says flyers cannot gain Movement Speed from imprinting. Imprinting may affect other documented creature outcomes, but it is not a supported route to higher flyer speed under this rule.
“A video shows a fast flyer, so the stat must work”
A video may use Mobile, an older patch, a different edition, a mod or custom settings. Ask for those details before comparing the result with a standard non-Mobile world.
“The Movement Speed button is missing, so my game is broken”
On a standard post-Patch-256 flyer, the missing or unavailable option is expected. Verify the edition and server configuration first; only then investigate a possible technical problem.
What can and cannot be concluded from the available documentation
The cited ARK Official Community Wiki Movement Speed result explains Movement Speed generally, but its returned excerpt does not itself state the flyer-specific restriction. The legacy ARK: Survival Evolved Movement Speed result supplies the Patch 256 restriction, the Mobile exception and the Patch 259 percentage change. The ARK Official Community Wiki Pteranodon result supplies the additional point that flyers cannot allocate Movement Speed levels or gain Movement Speed from imprinting.
Those sources support a precise conclusion for the cited ARK: Survival Evolved rule. They do not verify every current edition, platform-specific implementation, unofficial server setting or mod. The excerpts were retrieved on October 13, 2026, so treat edition and configuration as part of the answer rather than assuming that one rule covers every ARK installation.
Practical decision guide
| Your situation | Best interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Standard ARK: Survival Evolved, non-Mobile, post-Patch 256 | Movement Speed cannot be increased on a flying mount by leveling. | Do not reserve creature points for that stat; verify other attributes relevant to your use. |
| ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile | The legacy documentation lists Mobile as an exception. | Use the Mobile-specific creature screen and rules rather than assuming the desktop behavior. |
| Older build or legacy guide | The guide may describe mechanics from before Patch 256. | Match its version to your own before following its leveling advice. |
| Unofficial server or modded world | The cited pages do not determine the result. | Check server documentation or perform a controlled in-game comparison. |
| Only the survivor’s speed was increased | The mount’s flight speed is unaffected. | Inspect the flyer’s own stats and level-up options. |
Bottom line for flyers in ARK
If you are playing the standard non-Mobile ARK: Survival Evolved rule set after Patch 256, increasing Movement Speed does not make a flying mount faster because flyers cannot receive that stat through leveling. The 1.5% Patch 259 figure applies to the general Movement Speed mechanic, not as a way around the flyer restriction. Mobile is the documented exception, and any other result needs to be explained by a different edition, version, server configuration or mod.
