In Metroid Prime, Samus can jump while in Morph Ball form by using a Morph Ball Bomb: position the ball over the bomb as it explodes. Some editions also have a separate Spring Ball move, and the exact controls depend on which version you’re playing.
How to jump in Morph Ball form
Use a Bomb Jump in the original GameCube game
- Transform into Morph Ball form.
- Lay a Morph Ball Bomb.
- Position Samus directly over it as it explodes. The blast propels the ball upward for a short jump.
Nintendo’s Metroid Prime GameCube manual says that varying the timing of bombs can help Samus reach greater heights. The technique is about placement and timing, rather than pressing the regular jump button while rolled up. Nintendo’s GameCube manual
Which editions have a Morph Ball jump?
| Edition | Jump method | Control notes |
|---|---|---|
| Original Metroid Prime (GameCube) | Bomb Jump: position the Morph Ball over a bomb as it detonates. | The manual assigns A to laying Morph Ball Bombs and B to ordinary jumping and Boost Ball. It does not describe a separate Spring Ball move. Nintendo GameCube manual |
| Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii) | The manual documents both Bomb Jumps and a separate Spring Ball jump. | Use the Wii edition’s instructions; they are not universal button directions. Nintendo Trilogy manual |
| Wii de Asobu Metroid Prime | Spring Ball is performed by swinging the Wii Remote upward, provided Samus has bombs. | This motion input applies to this Wii version only. Nintendo’s controls page |
| Metroid Prime Remastered (Nintendo Switch) | Nintendo confirms Morph Ball and Bomb features; the product page does not specify the jump input. | Check the game’s in-game control display for the mapping in your control scheme. Nintendo product page |
Bomb Jump and Spring Ball are different techniques
A Bomb Jump uses the explosion of a Morph Ball Bomb to launch Samus. Spring Ball is a distinct move documented in Metroid Prime Trilogy; it does not mean that the bomb-launch technique is unavailable. The Wii-era motion instruction is specific to that version, so don’t assume it applies to GameCube, Trilogy’s other control options, or Remastered.

If the jump does not work
- For a Bomb Jump, make sure the ball is positioned over the bomb when it detonates; a bomb exploding nearby is not enough.
- If you are trying to use Spring Ball, confirm that your edition supports it and check that edition’s control display or manual.
- In Remastered, use the in-game controls to identify the input for your selected control scheme; the cited Nintendo product page confirms the relevant features but not a specific jump button.
