Yes—if you complete the claim before the Epic Games Store promotion ends, the game stays in your Epic library permanently. You do not have to install or launch it immediately. The practical catch is that Epic grants a continuing, account-bound digital license, not ownership of the game’s copyright, and access can still depend on your account and the game’s online services.
An offer that you never claim expires when its promotion window closes. A normal claimed promotion is different from a trial, beta, or press build, and a delisted game can remain in your library even though new customers can no longer buy it.

What happens to a claimed free game?
Epic’s Games Store FAQ says that when you claim a free game, it remains in your library to play even after the title is no longer available to new customers for free. Epic’s weekly-free-game support guidance states the same practical rule: once claimed, the game is yours permanently, even if you do not download it right away.

“Permanently” describes the library entitlement under Epic’s account and service terms. It does not promise that every future computer will run the game, that every multiplayer server will stay online, or that the entitlement can be transferred to another person.

Free promotion versus ownership: what you actually receive
Epic describes a completed free claim as a purchased digital license. That wording means the transaction adds a right to access the software through your Epic account; it does not transfer the game’s copyright or other intellectual-property title to you.
Epic’s End User License Agreement (EULA) says software is “licensed, not sold.” The license is personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and non-sublicensable. In practical terms, you can use the game through the account that made the claim, but you cannot resell the license, assign it to a different account, or grant another person an independent copy of your entitlement.
Epic and the game’s other rights holders retain ownership of the code, artwork, music, trademarks and other intellectual property. “Keep forever” therefore means that the account-level entitlement is intended to remain available under the agreement’s conditions. It does not create a property right in the underlying game.

When does the free-game offer expire?
Epic support says free promotions have a limited duration and that you must claim the game within the indicated period. Epic’s weekly-free-game article describes a seven-day availability period before the offer rotates to another title. The exact end time shown on the store page controls that particular promotion.
Claimed versus unclaimed
The deadline applies to people who have not completed the claim. If you finish the checkout-style claim while the offer is active, the resulting license remains in your library after the banner disappears. If you only add the page to a wishlist, leave it in your cart, or plan to claim it later, you have not secured the entitlement.
How to secure a weekly game
- Sign in to the Epic account you intend to use long term.
- Open the free-game listing while the promotion is still active and check the displayed end date and time.
- Select the game’s claim or get option and complete the no-cost checkout.
- Wait for the order confirmation or a library entry before closing the page.
- Open your Library and verify that the title appears under the same account.
Installing the game is optional. A successful claim record, not a downloaded installer, is what preserves the entitlement.
What if you claim it but never download it?
Nothing is lost merely because you postpone the download. Epic explicitly says a claimed weekly game remains yours permanently even if you do not download it right away. You can install it later from the Library, subject to the game’s system requirements, platform support and any service changes that occur in the meantime.

Keeping a title uninstalled can be useful when storage is limited or when you are collecting games for future use. It is still wise to open the Library once after claiming, because that confirms you used the intended account and that the transaction completed rather than remaining an unfinished checkout.
Can a delisting remove a game you claimed?
Epic’s delisting guidance says a game that is removed from the store can no longer be purchased, but an already owned or claimed copy remains accessible in the library. Delisting therefore normally affects new customers, not the entitlement recorded on your account.
Library availability and practical playability are separate questions. Some games require authentication, matchmaking, cloud services or other servers operated by the developer or publisher. If those services are discontinued, the game may become partly or completely unplayable even though its library entry and installer remain available. Epic’s statement about keeping access does not guarantee permanent multiplayer servers, patches, compatibility with future operating systems, or offline functionality.

Trials, betas and press builds are different
Epic distinguishes ordinary claimed promotions from limited-time versions. A trial can stop working when its trial period ends. A beta may close when testing finishes, and a press build can be withdrawn or restricted. Epic’s library guidance identifies beta and press builds as examples that do not grant permanent access.
Look at the product description and the checkout language before assuming that every zero-price listing is a permanent license. A standard “free game” promotion that completes as a normal library transaction is different from a timed demo or test build. The end of a trial is not evidence that Epic expired a normal claimed giveaway.

If a title is missing, first investigate the account and library settings rather than assuming the giveaway expired. Epic’s support guidance points to several checks.

- Confirm the account. Sign out and back in with the Epic account used for the claim. Google, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and other linked identities can lead you to a different Epic account if you created more than one.
- Reset library filters. Clear filters for genre, platform, installed status, hidden items or search terms. A filter can hide a valid entitlement.
- Refresh the Library. Restart the Epic Games Launcher or reload the web library after the claim has completed.
- Check platform compatibility. Some products are available only on specific operating systems or devices. A compatibility restriction can make a title appear unavailable without cancelling the license.
- Check transaction history. Confirm that the no-cost order completed on the account you are viewing. A failed or abandoned checkout does not create a claim.
- Check for a refund. If the title was a paid purchase that was later refunded, Epic removes the refunded product from the library.
- Consider exceptional revocation. Epic lists fraudulent-code revocation and limited-time builds among reasons access can disappear. Contact Player Support if the account and order records do not explain the problem.
Can you get an Epic free game after the offer ends?
Usually not. Epic says the free promotion has a limited duration and requires a claim within the indicated period. Once the weekly window closes, the title can return to its normal price or leave the promotion entirely. Epic’s support guidance does not provide a retroactive claim process for people who missed the deadline.
A later giveaway of the same game would be a new promotion, not a restoration of the old window. Watch the current store listing for its own deadline instead of relying on an earlier announcement.
Refund rules for Epic Games Store purchases
A normal free claim is not a paid purchase that you can refund. If you bought a game through Epic checkout, separate refund rules apply. Epic’s policy covers purchases made through Epic checkout on PC, Mac and mobile, with eligibility depending on the product label and the conditions below.

The 14-day and two-hour conditions are general policy limits, not a promise that every transaction qualifies. The store’s refundable or self-refundable label, the product type, local consumer law and any special terms can change the outcome. A refunded paid game is removed from the library, which explains why a previously visible purchase can disappear after the refund is processed.
Account and service limits to keep in mind
The permanent-library rule operates within Epic’s EULA and Terms. Epic can enforce account rules, restrict platform access, make technical changes and respond to violations. Account termination or other enforcement action can affect access to licenses associated with that account. These conditions do not mean a normal promotion silently expires; they explain why “permanent” is not the same as an unconditional guarantee of access in every circumstance.
The license is also tied to the Epic account that made the transaction. Keep your account credentials secure, enable available security protections, and avoid creating duplicate accounts when claiming promotions. A claim on one account will not automatically appear on another account that happens to use the same computer.
