No—you cannot keep a hired Pawn as your permanent companion. Dragon’s Dogma 2 separates your persistent Main Pawn from temporary support Pawns hired from friends or other players. You can inspect, command, and equip a support Pawn, but that Pawn remains owned by its original player and leaves your party when you dismiss it or it becomes forfeit.
Equipment is the important catch: newly equipped weapons, armor, and other compatible gear are treated as a gift to the Pawn’s owner when the Pawn leaves. Ordinary materials carried in the Pawn’s pack are handled differently and can return to your storage. If an item matters to you, remove it before dismissing the Pawn.

The quick answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can I keep a hired Pawn permanently? | No. A hired or support Pawn is temporary and remains another player’s Pawn. |
| Can I equip one? | Yes, if the weapon, armor, or item is compatible with its vocation. Newly equipped gear is effectively sent to the owner as a gift when the Pawn leaves. |
| Can I change its appearance or voice? | No. Appearance, voice, and other permanent customization belong to the Pawn’s owner. |
| Can I change its vocation? | You cannot turn a hired Pawn into your own customizable Pawn. Its vocation and normal compatibility rules still govern what it can use. |
| Do carried materials come back? | Materials in a support Pawn’s pack are reported to return to your item storage when the Pawn is dismissed or forfeited, although Pawn specializations can move or sell some low-rarity items while the Pawn is active. |
The practical rule is simple: customize and invest in your Main Pawn; treat a hired Pawn as a temporary party member whose equipment you are willing to give away.

|---|---|---|
| Ownership and persistence | Created for your Arisen and remains part of your save. | Belongs to another player and is temporary in your party. |

| Online availability | Your own Pawn is always the one tied to your character. | Can be hired from friends or other players on the same platform; this is not online co-op multiplayer. |
What you can change on a hired Pawn
Inspection and commands
You can select a support Pawn, inspect its vocation, equipment, skills, and other displayed characteristics, then decide whether it fits your party. Once hired, it can receive the normal party commands and fight alongside you. Those actions affect how the Pawn functions in your current adventure, not who owns it.
Appearance, voice, and inclination
The official PlayStation description calls the Main Pawn “fully customizable.” For that Pawn, the Art of Metamorphosis can change appearance and voice under the item’s stated conditions, while inclination can be changed with the Art of Metamorphosis or the appropriate Rift Incense interaction.
Those tools are not a rental-service customization system. The available official descriptions do not provide a way to use them on another player’s support Pawn. You cannot remodel a hired Pawn, replace its voice, or permanently rewrite its inclination for the owner’s save.

Vocation
A hired Pawn arrives with the vocation selected by its owner. You should choose a support Pawn whose role suits your party instead of expecting to convert it after hiring. Equipment remains subject to vocation and the game’s ordinary compatibility rules, so a weapon or armor piece that works for one Pawn may be unusable by another.
How equipping a hired Pawn really works
Compatible gear can be equipped
The game allows you to put compatible weapons, armor, and other equipment on a support Pawn. This can be useful when a temporary party member needs a better-fitting item for its vocation or when you want to improve its immediate combat performance.
Compatibility still matters. A Pawn cannot ignore vocation restrictions simply because you own the item, and equipping a piece does not give you a way to change the Pawn’s underlying role.
Newly equipped gear is a gift
When a support Pawn leaves, equipment newly equipped on it is sent to its owner. In practical terms, putting your sword, staff, helmet, or armor on a hired Pawn is a gift transaction, not a temporary loan. The owner receives the gear rather than you recovering it as party equipment.
This is the most important inventory rule in the system. Do not equip a rare or irreplaceable item on a hired Pawn unless you are deliberately giving it away. If you changed your mind, remove the item before dismissal and replace it with gear you can afford to lose.

- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Gifts and equipment are related but not identical
Capcom’s FAQ says you can send a gift before dismissing a support Pawn. That explicit gift option is separate from the automatic treatment of newly equipped equipment: both ultimately send something to the other player, but equipping valuable gear by accident is avoidable. Check the Pawn’s equipment screen before confirming its departure.
What happens when a hired Pawn leaves
Normal dismissal
When you dismiss a support Pawn, it returns to its owner. Gear you newly equipped is transferred to that owner, while ordinary materials carried in the Pawn’s pack are reported to return to your storage. The distinction is between equipped gear and carried items, so do not assume every object follows the same rule.
Forfeiture
If the Pawn becomes forfeit, Capcom states that items held by the Pawn are automatically sent to item storage. This protects carried inventory from being stranded with a Pawn that is no longer available to your party.
Forfeiture does not make the Pawn yours or preserve it as a permanent companion. It is simply another way the temporary contract ends, after which the Pawn goes back to its owner’s world.
Materials and Pawn specializations
Materials in the support Pawn’s pack are treated differently from equipment. Inventory guidance reports that ordinary materials return to your storage when the Pawn is dismissed or forfeited. However, some Pawn specializations can move or sell low-rarity items while the Pawn is active. If a material appears to be missing, check whether a specialization acted on it before assuming that dismissal lost it.
Safe procedure for hiring and dismissing a Pawn
Use this sequence whenever you are replacing a support Pawn or considering an equipment upgrade.
- Open the game’s Pawn-hiring interface. Choose a support Pawn offered by a friend or another player. Hiring is limited to users on the same platform.
- Inspect before confirming. Check vocation, equipment, skills, and the displayed information that matters to your party. Pick a role you actually need rather than planning to change the Pawn later.
- Hire the Pawn into an available support slot. Your Main Pawn remains your persistent companion; support Pawns occupy the temporary slots.
- Use commands and evaluate performance. Let the Pawn work in your party before spending any equipment. A good fit may need no changes at all.
- Equip only expendable items. Confirm that every item is compatible with the Pawn’s vocation, and treat every newly equipped piece as a possible gift to the owner.
- Recover valuable gear before dismissal. Open the Pawn’s equipment, remove anything you want to retain, and return it to your own inventory.
- Send an intentional gift if you want to. Capcom supports sending a gift before dismissal. Use that option for an item you genuinely mean to give away, not as a substitute for recovering your own gear.
- Dismiss the Pawn and verify storage. Ordinary carried materials should be handled separately from equipped gear. If the Pawn becomes forfeit instead, check item storage for the held items.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
“I dismissed the Pawn and my armor is gone.”
That is expected if the armor was newly equipped on the support Pawn. The transfer to its owner is the system’s gift behavior. You cannot treat a hired Pawn as a locker for loaned equipment, so recover your gear before dismissal next time.

“The Pawn will not use the weapon I selected.”
Check vocation and compatibility. Equipment rules still apply to support Pawns, and an item suitable for one vocation may not be valid for another. Choose a Pawn already built for the role you need.
“My friend’s Pawn does not appear.”
Hiring is restricted to players on the same platform. Capcom’s FAQ states: “No, pawns can only be hired by a user playing the game on the same platform.” A platform mismatch prevents the hire even when the player is otherwise eligible.
“Is hiring a Pawn online co-op?”
No. Capcom describes hiring Pawns from friends or other players around the world, but the system does not place those players together in a shared co-op session. You are borrowing a recorded companion configuration, not inviting the owner into your game.

How to choose between investing in your Main Pawn and hiring support
Use your Main Pawn for long-term customization
If you want a particular appearance, voice, inclination, or carefully maintained build, put that effort into your Main Pawn. It is the companion whose identity and progression remain tied to your save, and it is the Pawn for which the game documents the full customization tools.
Use hired Pawns to fill immediate party gaps
Support Pawns are best treated as role coverage. Hire a vocation that supplies healing, ranged damage, frontline defense, or another capability your current party lacks. Their value is flexibility: you can replace them when the party’s needs change without rebuilding your permanent companion.
Spend only what you are prepared to give away
A hired Pawn can benefit from compatible equipment, but the transfer risk changes the economics. Use spare or replaceable gear when an upgrade is worthwhile, and keep unique equipment on your own character or Main Pawn. This avoids turning an ordinary party adjustment into an accidental gift.
Platform and availability limits
Capcom’s FAQ states that support Pawns can be hired from friends or other players around the world, subject to the same-platform rule. That means the feature is broad within a platform ecosystem but not cross-platform. The Main Pawn and hired Pawns therefore serve different social functions: your Main Pawn represents your persistent character, while support Pawns let other players’ builds assist your adventure asynchronously.
The official PlayStation description summarizes the structure clearly: “The player’s main Pawn is fully customizable,” while two additional Pawns can be hired through the game’s options or from other players. That wording is why a hired Pawn can be inspected and used extensively without ever becoming your own permanent companion.
Bottom line
You cannot keep a hired Pawn permanently or customize it as if it were your Main Pawn. You can hire up to two temporary support Pawns, command them, and equip compatible items, but newly equipped gear is sent to the owner when the Pawn leaves. Ordinary carried materials are handled separately and can return to storage on dismissal or forfeiture. For a lasting build, appearance, voice, and inclination, use your Main Pawn; for flexible party roles, hire support Pawns and treat their equipment as expendable.
