An unlisted livestream can be eligible to go live. “Unlisted” is a visibility setting for an individual stream; it does not bypass YouTube’s channel requirements. A hidden channel is different: YouTube disables it until you restore it. For standard live streaming, the channel must be verified, the creator must be at least 16, and the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Mobile streaming has an additional 50-subscriber minimum.
Unlisted stream versus hidden channel
An unlisted stream is still a livestream on an eligible channel. Anyone with its link can watch and share it, but it generally will not appear in the channel’s video listings or search results. Choosing unlisted changes who is likely to find the stream; it does not change whether YouTube lets the channel go live. YouTube’s live-stream settings and privacy-setting guidance explain the visibility options.
A hidden channel is not an unlisted channel. YouTube says a hidden channel is disabled and its content is not viewable to others. Restore the channel before trying to use its features, including livestreaming. YouTube’s hidden-channel restoration instructions describe the process.
What each visibility setting means
| Setting | Who can watch | Discovery and sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone | May appear on the channel and in search. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link | Generally absent from channel listings and search; viewers can share the link. |
| Private | The owner and people selected for private sharing | Not link-accessible to everyone; distinct from unlisted. |
Unlisted is therefore not a confidentiality control: a viewer who has the URL can pass it on. Choose private when access should be limited to specifically selected viewers.

Requirements to livestream on YouTube
YouTube’s general live-stream requirements are that the channel is verified, the creator is at least 16, and there are no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. YouTube states: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.” YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
The 50-subscriber threshold applies specifically to mobile live streaming, not as a general eligibility rule for every streaming method. YouTube’s mobile requirements also include verification, no restrictions in the previous 90 days, live streaming turned on, and a supported device. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and fix the channel state
- Confirm the channel is active. If it is hidden, sign in to the account and follow YouTube’s channel restoration flow. For a Brand Account, select the hidden channel and confirm restoration. YouTube notes that view counts may take up to one week to update after the channel becomes visible again.
- Verify the channel. If it is not verified, complete YouTube’s verification process; unlisted visibility does not replace this requirement.
- Check restriction history. Confirm that the channel has had no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube says an active restriction prevents you from using another channel to stream during the restriction period. Do not try to evade it by switching channels; see YouTube’s live-streaming rules.
- If using a phone, check the mobile-specific conditions. Confirm the channel has at least 50 subscribers, live streaming is turned on, and the device is supported. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time mobile activation.
- Choose visibility after eligibility is established. In the stream settings, select public, unlisted, or private according to who should be able to watch. Visibility cannot restore a hidden channel or remove a restriction.
Does your streaming method change eligibility?
YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. They are setup choices, not substitutes for channel eligibility. Webcam streaming requires a computer with a webcam; encoder workflows can use production equipment such as cameras, microphones, and preamps. Buying equipment does not restore a hidden channel or lift a restriction. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover its streaming methods.
Common reasons you cannot go live
- The channel is hidden: restore it first; changing a stream to unlisted does not reactivate it.
- The channel is not verified: complete verification before attempting to stream.
- A live-stream restriction is active or falls within the 90-day lookback: wait until eligible and follow YouTube’s restriction notices. Do not use another channel to get around an active restriction.
- You are trying to stream from a mobile device with fewer than 50 subscribers: the mobile threshold is separate from the general requirements. Consider a different YouTube streaming method if appropriate, but all methods still require an eligible channel.
- Mobile streaming was just enabled: first activation can take up to 24 hours.
- You expect unlisted to make the stream private: anyone with an unlisted link can watch and reshare it. Use private sharing for selected viewers instead.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the channel is eligible and you want a prerecorded video to keep looping as a YouTube livestream, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Your uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not camera livestreaming, and it does not change YouTube eligibility rules. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
