No—not in any established, meaningful way. Horror games played while seated have not been shown to cause weight loss. Fear or a racing heart is not the same as exercise, and the available studies do not test horror games as a weight-loss method. Games that require sustained movement can use more energy than seated gaming, but that is a different activity—and a short-term calorie increase does not establish lasting weight loss.
Does seated horror gaming burn enough calories to cause weight loss?
There is no reliable calorie figure for playing a horror game, and no horror-specific trial showing that it leads to weight loss. The evidence on traditional video gaming offers a useful, though indirect, comparison: a one-hour study of 120 young adults found a mean energy surplus of 655 ± 533 kcal during traditional gaming, compared with 638 ± 408 kcal while watching television. The surplus means participants took in more energy than they expended during the session; it does not show that gaming caused weight loss. Oakes and colleagues, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2012.
A small 2015 study of 14 participants measured joystick gaming at 1.07 ± 0.26 kcal/kg/hour and motion-sensor gaming at 1.30 ± 0.32 kcal/kg/hour. The authors described the increase as modest and concluded that traditional gaming with a motion sensor did not provide enough energy expenditure for cardiovascular conditioning. They also noted that increased heart rate and breathing were consistent with psychological stimulation rather than exercise. PubMed-indexed study, 2015.
Why fear is not a calorie-burning workout
A jump scare can make you feel startled and briefly raise your heart rate, but that response alone does not show that you have done exercise or burned enough energy to change body weight. The cited studies do not measure calorie burn from jump scares, and no figure should be inferred from heart rate, fear, or suspense.

What changes when a game requires movement?
Active video games can increase energy expenditure compared with traditional seated gaming, but the results concern movement-heavy games—not horror games as a genre. A 2015 review of 15 studies published between 1998 and April 2012 estimated average active-game play at 2.62 METs (95% CI 2.25–3.00), which the authors characterized as light activity. It estimated about 108 kcal more per hour for a 60-kg person than traditional video gaming; that is a group-based review estimate, not a prediction for an individual or a horror title. The review noted substantial variation between games. Dutta and Pereira, Journal of Physical Activity and Health, 2015.
The authors said active video games “may be used to replace sedentary screen time (eg, television watching or TVG play) with light activity in healthy adults.” That is a claim about substituting light movement for sedentary time, not proof that active gaming produces weight loss.

A 2009 study of 22 children and 20 adults measured energy expenditure above resting levels during Nintendo Wii Boxing at 189 ± 63 kcal/hour for children and 148 ± 71 kcal/hour for adults. It demonstrates that an activity-promoting game can increase movement and expenditure; it does not measure horror gaming or establish lasting weight change. Lanningham-Foster and colleagues, The Journal of Pediatrics, 2009.
What the active-game evidence does—and does not—show
- Movement-heavy games can demand more energy than conventional seated play.
- The reviewed average intensity was light activity, with substantial differences among games.
- These session measurements do not establish how a person’s body weight changes over time.
Why a session’s calorie estimate cannot predict weight loss
Energy expenditure during one play session is not the same outcome as weight loss over weeks or months. A short-term measurement does not account for the broader pattern of energy intake and expenditure over time, and it cannot establish that the activity will produce a lasting change in body weight.

What to take from the evidence
- Playing a horror game while seated is not an established weight-loss method.
- Fear, a fast heartbeat, or a jump scare is not evidence of meaningful exercise or a specific calorie burn.
- A game that requires sustained movement may replace some sedentary time with light activity, but the available studies do not show that horror gaming causes lasting weight loss.
