Yes. You can make a modern game appear older by processing its rendered image with shaders, using an engine’s pixel-perfect rendering pipeline, applying an emulator shader, or placing a video scaler between a console and the display. These techniques can add scanlines, phosphor structure, color bleed, soft focus, curvature, pixel boundaries and other period cues.
They mainly change presentation. A screen filter does not automatically replace a game’s models, textures, animation systems, sprite limits, level design or other underlying assets. That distinction determines whether you want a convincing CRT presentation or a deeper PS1-, SNES- or arcade-style conversion.

What an “older” look actually changes
There are two different goals hidden in this question. The first is making a modern render look as though it is being viewed on older display hardware. The second is making the game appear to have been built with the technical limits and visual conventions of an older console or arcade board.
Display-style changes
Post-processing can alter the final frame after the game has rendered it. Lower apparent resolution, deliberate pixel boundaries, integer scaling, scanlines, phosphor or shadow-mask patterns, bloom, curvature, color bleed, reduced color depth and restrained grain all belong to this category. The game still calculates its original geometry, animation and effects; the player sees a treated version of the output.

Rendering and asset changes
Authentic PS1-era cues such as low-poly geometry, texture warping, vertex wobble, affine-looking texture behavior and strict sprite or color limits require changes earlier in the pipeline. Those changes normally involve the game’s renderer, assets or both. A horizontal-line overlay cannot create a low-polygon model, a limited animation set or a historically accurate sprite budget that was never present in the source.
That is why no single filter can turn every modern release into every older era. A CRT treatment can suggest the display; an era-specific reconstruction needs control over how the game is rendered.
Four practical ways to apply the effect
| Method | Typical platform | What it changes | Control and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC shader injection | Compatible Windows PC games and video software | The final frame, using color and sometimes depth data exposed by the injector | Highly adjustable and reversible, but compatibility and anti-cheat policy vary by title |
| Engine-level pixel-perfect rendering | Games built with an engine that exposes the workflow, especially developer projects | Pixel-aligned rendering plus optional post-processing before the final image | Most coherent when designed into the game; generally unavailable to players unless the developer exposes settings |
| Video-path hardware | Consoles, handheld docks and locked-down systems that cannot run injected shaders | The signal after the source device has rendered it | One device can serve several sources, with no game modification, but it adds hardware cost and another processing stage |
| Emulator CRT shaders | Games running through a shader-capable emulator frontend | The emulated frame, including CRT simulation and scaling behavior | Fine control over scaling and display characteristics; demanding presets can slow weak hardware |
PC: use a post-processing shader injector
On a compatible PC title, an injector is usually the most adjustable route. ReShade describes itself as a “generic post-processing injector for games and video software.” It can access frame color data and, where the game exposes it safely, depth data. That makes it suitable for CRT-style overlays and other screen treatments without changing the game’s installed assets.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before installing anything
- Check the game’s anti-cheat and multiplayer rules. An injector may be blocked, disabled or treated as unsupported even when the same effect is harmless in an offline title.
- Confirm that the game’s rendering path is compatible with the injector and that your display resolution and graphics hardware can handle the chosen shader.
- Keep an unmodified copy of the game’s configuration and know how to remove the injector so you can return to the original presentation.
A safe setup sequence
- Install the injector for the game’s actual executable and select the rendering API it uses. Do not assume the API from the game’s age or storefront; verify it in the title’s own settings or documentation.
- Launch the game once and confirm that the injector’s in-game interface appears. If it does not, stop and resolve compatibility before adding presets.
- Start with a restrained CRT preset: mild scanlines, a subtle phosphor or mask pattern, modest bloom and limited curvature. Heavy effects make it harder to judge whether scaling is correct.
- Set the game or injector to an integer scale where practical. Repeated pixel patterns remain more even when the source pixels map to whole display-pixel multiples.
- Adjust one control at a time. Tune brightness and contrast after the mask or scanline strength; otherwise you may compensate for an overly dark preset by crushing shadow detail.
- Test menus, bright scenes, dark scenes and rapid motion. A preset that looks convincing on a still title screen can shimmer, blur text or exaggerate motion artifacts during play.
Depth-aware effects can behave differently from simple color overlays because they depend on how a particular game supplies depth information. If a mask or scanline effect works but depth-based curvature, edge treatment or focus effects do not, use a color-only preset rather than forcing unsupported depth data.
Developer route: pixel-perfect rendering in an engine
If you are making the game, or the developer has exposed a rendering mode, an engine-level workflow gives you control that a player-side overlay cannot. Unity’s pixel-perfect workflow is designed to keep rendered elements consistent with a chosen pixel grid. Unity also documents combining that workflow with post-processing for retro screen effects.

What this route can control
- How world and screen coordinates map to a defined pixel grid.
- Whether sprites and 2D elements remain aligned rather than landing between display pixels.
- When the image is reduced, enlarged or presented at an integer scale.
- Which post-processing effects are applied after the pixel-structured image is produced.
Why it looks different from an overlay
A developer can decide where pixelation occurs in the pipeline. Pixelating only the final image leaves the original geometry and lighting calculations intact. Rendering at a deliberately limited internal resolution can produce stable pixel boundaries throughout the scene, while a later CRT pass adds scanlines, bloom or a mask. The result is usually more coherent than blurring a high-resolution frame and drawing black lines over it.
For a player, this option exists only when the game provides a toggle, a low-resolution mode or another supported rendering setting. Installing a general-purpose injector cannot recreate engine decisions that the shipped game never exposes.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Console and locked-down systems: process the video signal
When a console cannot run injected software, a video-path scaler can apply the treatment after the console has rendered its frame. RetroTINK-5X Pro firmware documentation, for example, lists scanline choices including Slot Mask, Aperture Grille and PVM styles, along with an LCD overlay effect. Those options are useful when the source is a console, a device with no shader access or a system where modifying game software is undesirable.
Basic signal chain
- Connect the console or other source to the scaler’s supported input.
- Connect the scaler’s output to the display and select the display’s matching input.
- Choose the output resolution and refresh mode that the display accepts.
- Enable the scaler’s scanline or overlay menu and select a pattern that matches the look you want: a slot mask, aperture grille, PVM-style treatment or LCD overlay.
- Adjust intensity while viewing both bright and dark scenes. Excessive scanline strength can erase detail, especially after additional scaling by the television.
- Use integer scaling when the scaler and display combination allows it. Non-integer enlargement can make repeating scanlines uneven from one row to the next.
Hardware processing affects whatever source is connected to it, so the same treatment can cover several consoles. It also leaves the game files untouched. The trade-off is that you must manage an additional device and its firmware, output modes and display compatibility.
Emulators: combine integer scaling with a CRT shader
Libretro’s documentation describes CRT shaders as attempts to reproduce aspects and characteristics of cathode-ray-tube displays. This approach is especially useful when the game is already running through an emulator frontend that supports shader passes.

Recommended order
- Set the emulator’s internal resolution and aspect ratio correctly for the system being emulated.
- Enable integer scaling if your display size permits it. Libretro notes that integer scaling generally improves repeating scanline-type effects because each source row is enlarged evenly.
- Apply the CRT shader after the game’s image has been scaled according to the core’s output rules.
- Choose the mask or grille style, scanline strength, bloom, curvature and phosphor behavior.
- Check latency and frame pacing during motion, not just the appearance of a paused frame.
CRT shaders can be computationally expensive. Libretro explicitly warns that some shaders are very demanding and can make weak hardware run slowly. If frame pacing deteriorates, reduce the shader’s complexity, disable costly passes or use a simpler scanline and mask combination.

Building a convincing look for each era
General CRT presentation
Begin with scaling rather than decoration. A stable pixel grid gives scanlines and mask patterns something consistent to follow. Add a moderate scanline effect, then a phosphor, shadow-mask or grille structure. Soft focus, slight bloom and limited color bleed can suggest the way bright neighboring colors interacted on a CRT. Curvature and grain should remain restrained; excessive distortion announces the filter instead of resembling a display.
SNES-style presentation
SNES-era references are usually strongest when the image has clear sprite boundaries, a limited-looking palette and an appropriately low apparent resolution. A CRT pass can provide the display character, but it cannot impose the original console’s sprite construction or palette decisions on a modern game. To go further, the game itself needs a low-resolution render target, deliberate palette reduction or assets authored for those limits.
Arcade-style presentation
Arcade monitors varied, so choose a mask or grille pattern that fits the intended cabinet rather than treating every arcade game as identical. Preserve the game’s aspect ratio and use integer scaling when possible. A bright, clean aperture-grille look and a softer shadow-mask look communicate different hardware histories; the shader should support the chosen reference rather than stack every effect at once.
PS1-style presentation
A PS1 impression depends more on the scene than on scanlines alone. Low-poly geometry, texture warping, vertex wobble, limited texture detail and deliberately simple lighting are rendering or asset decisions. A CRT overlay can frame those cues, but it cannot generate them from a modern high-detail model. If the game offers a low-fidelity mode, combine it with a light display treatment; otherwise, expect a modern scene viewed through an older-looking screen rather than a true PS1 reconstruction.

Troubleshooting common failures
The game will not launch or multiplayer is unavailable
Remove or disable the injector first and test the unmodified game. Anti-cheat systems and platform restrictions can reject injected components. Treat compatibility as title-specific; a setup that works in one game is not a guarantee for another.
The image is too dark or muddy
Reduce mask and scanline strength before raising brightness. Recheck bloom and color bleed, then inspect a bright scene and a dark scene separately. A display’s own picture mode may also be applying a second layer of sharpening, smoothing or contrast processing.
Scanlines shimmer or vary in thickness
Check the scaling ratio. Integer scaling usually keeps repeating lines more uniform. Non-integer enlargement, an additional television scaler or a mismatched aspect-ratio conversion can make alternating rows uneven.
Performance drops after enabling the shader
Disable the most demanding passes first, especially complex CRT simulations, multiple blur stages or high-quality mask calculations. Libretro’s warning about demanding shaders applies directly here: a visually accurate preset can be too expensive for the available hardware.
The result still does not look like the target console
Identify whether the missing cue is a display artifact or a rendering limitation. Scanlines, masks, bloom and curvature belong to the display side. Geometry, texture behavior, sprite limits, palette choices and animation constraints require engine or asset changes. Choose a method that controls the missing layer rather than adding more screen distortion.

How to choose the right method
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum adjustment on a compatible PC | A shader injector | You can tune the final image and remove the treatment without replacing game assets |
| A stable look built into your own game | Engine-level pixel-perfect rendering | Pixel alignment and post-processing can be designed together instead of added afterward |
| Several consoles or a system with no shader access | A video-path scaler | The treatment occurs after rendering and is independent of the game software |
| Retro games already running in an emulator | Integer scaling plus a CRT shader | The emulator controls source scaling while the shader supplies display characteristics |
| Historical PS1, SNES or arcade construction | Engine, mod or asset changes | A display filter alone cannot reproduce the underlying technical limits |
Use the least invasive method that controls the effect you actually want. Software is usually the most flexible on a compatible PC; hardware is practical when the source is closed or shared across multiple systems; built-in engine controls are the least fragile when the developer provides them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a CRT filter turn a modern game into a genuine PS1 game?
No. It can reproduce display characteristics such as scanlines, masks, bloom and curvature, but PS1-era geometry, texture behavior, animation limits and asset choices require changes to the renderer or content.
Why is integer scaling important?
It enlarges source pixels by whole-number multiples, keeping repeating scanlines and pixel boundaries more even. Non-integer scaling can make rows vary in thickness or shimmer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I use these effects on a console that cannot run shaders?
Yes. A video-path scaler can process the signal after the console renders it. This is useful for consoles and other locked-down systems where software injection is unavailable.
Why does a shader slow my computer down?
CRT simulations may use several demanding passes for masks, blur, bloom and curvature. Libretro documents that some presets can make weak hardware run slowly, so simpler passes may be necessary.
Are shader injectors safe for online games?
Compatibility is title-specific. Anti-cheat software or platform rules may block injected components, so check the game’s policy and test without the injector if launch or multiplayer problems occur.
