The smithing table recipe uses the armor piece, one template, and a netherite ingot; the template is consumed.
Why a smithing template is required
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20 release notes say netherite equipment crafting now requires a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template. The Bedrock Trails & Tales update notes describe the same requirement. In a vanilla world using those rules, there is no alternative recipe that skips the template.

At the smithing table, combine one diamond armor piece, one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, and one netherite ingot. Each upgrade consumes a template, so upgrading a full armor set requires a template for each piece.
How to get a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
Find one in a Bastion Remnant
Search Bastion Remnant chests for the initial template. Java Edition 1.20’s release notes specify that every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant contains two Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates; that guarantee applies to Treasure Room bastions, not every bastion type.

Duplicate a template you already have
Use a crafting table to duplicate a template with seven diamonds, one block of the material the template is made from, and the template itself. The recipe produces two templates, consuming the original and leaving you with two copies. This supplies more templates; it does not make the armor-upgrade recipe template-free.
