Yes. Obsidian can be melted or fused, but it takes high-temperature kiln conditions. Molten obsidian is highly viscous, so it will not necessarily flow or pour like ordinary liquid glass. There is no single exact melting temperature that applies to every specimen.
What temperature does obsidian melt at?
The available measurements depend on the material and conditions. The National Park Service gives 700–900°C as a general melting-temperature range for silicic rocks; that is broad context, not a precise threshold for obsidian.
An obsidian-specific kiln experiment by Shackley and Dillian reported minor physical changes in its samples beginning after 700°C. The samples melted and fused at some temperature above 940°C, and heating them to 1080°C caused severe physical changes. Those results describe the tested samples and experimental setup, not a guaranteed temperature for all natural obsidian.
A 2026 study of synthetic obsidian heated a sample to 1065°C and observed bubbles expand as it heated and shrink as it cooled. This further illustrates how composition and thermal history affect the result; it does not establish how a natural specimen will look after remelting.

Why melted obsidian may not pour like liquid
Obsidian is usually rhyolitic volcanic glass. Glass forms when molten material cools without crystallizing, and the high silica content and low water content of obsidian magma make it unusually viscous. The USGS describes obsidian as forming when viscous, silica-rich rhyolite lava cools rapidly (Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, October 19, 2020).
That viscosity matters: reaching a molten or fused state does not mean the material becomes a thin, easily poured liquid. The cited evidence does not establish that remelted natural obsidian will produce a clear, uniform object.

Can you melt obsidian at home?
The evidence supports melting in high-temperature kiln conditions, not an ordinary household oven or handheld torch as a reliable way to melt a useful quantity. It does not establish a safe home procedure. A kiln intended for controlled high-temperature work would need a suitable temperature rating and chamber capacity; check its specifications and suitability for the material rather than assuming a particular device will work.
Obsidian also breaks with sharp, conchoidal edges. The USGS advises gloves when walking on an obsidian flow, so take care handling fragments and avoid assuming pieces are blunt or safe to touch.
