A standard SteamVR reinstall replaces its application files. A complete reinstall also deals with stale OpenVR driver registrations, leftover folders, third-party add-ons and, when necessary, SteamVR USB state. This guide is for SteamVR on Windows. Start with file verification unless you specifically need a configuration reset, and back up your settings before removing anything.
Choose the least disruptive fix first
| Symptom | Best first step | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| SteamVR crashes, a file is missing, or an update failed | Verify tool files | Repairs damaged or missing application files |
| SteamVR installation is clearly corrupted | Standard uninstall and reinstall | Replaces SteamVR local content |
| The same error returns after reinstalling | Reset OpenVR path data and remove obsolete drivers | Rebuilds external-driver registrations |
| The headset or link box is not detected | Check connections, then reset SteamVR USB devices if appropriate | Clears SteamVR’s remembered USB state |
| Tracking or boundaries are wrong | Run Room Setup and check physical tracking hardware | Recreates the play area; does not repair hardware |
| Duplicate Windows Mixed Reality paths are reported | Repair the specific duplicate entry | Removes only the obsolete driver path |
Valve’s support flow recommends verifying the tool cache before deleting local content: SteamVR file and USB troubleshooting.
Before you begin
- Record custom controller bindings, Room Setup choices, launch options, overlay names and the installation locations of third-party OpenVR drivers. A clean reset may not restore these automatically.
- Close SteamVR, Steam, and the headset manufacturer’s application (for example, Meta Quest Link, VIVE software, Windows Mixed Reality components or PSVR2 PC software).
- Disconnect the headset’s USB and display or link cable. Leave it disconnected through the first reboot and reinstall unless the vendor setup program explicitly requires an earlier connection.
- Confirm which Steam library contains SteamVR. It may be on another drive; use
<Steam library>steamappscommonSteamVRrather than assuming a C: drive. - Back up the OpenVR folder by opening
%LOCALAPPDATA%openvrwith Win + R and copying it to a safe location.
Do not use registry cleaners or delete unrelated driver folders. Identify the application that installed an add-on before removing it.
Method 1: Verify SteamVR files
- Open Steam → Library.
- Enable the Tools filter if SteamVR is not visible.
- Right-click SteamVR and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (called Local Files in some clients).
- Choose Verify integrity of tool files or Verify Integrity of Tool Cache.
Verification repairs SteamVR files without removing user configuration or external-driver registrations. If it reports no problem and the failure is configuration-related, continue below.

Method 2: Standard SteamVR uninstall and reinstall
1. Remove optional add-ons first
Uninstall performance overlays, input emulators, dashboard tools, virtual-display or motion-compensation drivers, headset bridges and duplicate external-driver versions using each application’s own uninstaller. SteamVR’s removal does not necessarily unregister these components; OpenVR maintains driver registrations separately (Valve OpenVR driver documentation).
2. Remove SteamVR through Steam
- With Steam open, go to Library → Tools.
- Right-click SteamVR.
- Select Delete Local Content, or the current equivalent uninstall/remove-local-content command.
- When removal finishes, do not reconnect the headset yet.
These are Valve’s documented uninstall and reinstall steps; labels can vary slightly between Steam client versions (Steam Support’s SteamVR reinstall instructions).
3. Reboot Windows
Restart before reinstalling, particularly after repeated crashes, USB detection failures or removal of a headset driver. A reboot releases old processes and lets Windows reload device state; it does not itself reinstall SteamVR.
4. Check for a leftover application folder
After restarting, inspect <Steam library>steamappscommonSteamVR. If the folder remains, rename it to SteamVR.old instead of deleting it immediately. This preserves logs and gives you a recovery option. Delete the renamed folder only after confirming that no needed files remain. Manual folder removal is an escalation step, not a substitute for Steam’s uninstall command.

5. Install SteamVR again
- Open Steam → Library → Tools.
- Find SteamVR and double-click it, or select its install command.
- Choose the desired Steam library and let Steam finish downloading.
- Do not reinstall every overlay or driver yet.
SteamVR is distributed through Steam and may also be offered when Steam detects a compatible headset (SteamVR features and device information).
Method 3: Complete cleanup when the error survives reinstalling
Reset OpenVR path registration
The documented per-user registration file is %LOCALAPPDATA%openvropenvrpaths.vrpath. It is maintained by vrpathreg.exe, typically found at <SteamVR install directory>binwin64vrpathreg.exe. Older support material can show different spellings, so check the actual filename before changing anything.
- Press Win + R, enter
%LOCALAPPDATA%openvr, and press Enter. - Copy the folder as a backup.
- For a fresh reset, rename
openvrpaths.vrpathtoopenvrpaths.vrpath.old. Renaming the entireopenvrfolder is another reversible option. - Reinstall or launch SteamVR so it can recreate registration data.
This removes registrations for external drivers, so legitimate headset bridges and add-ons may need to be reinstalled or configured again. Do not edit the JSON manually unless you can identify one specific bad entry, and do not run unverified destructive vrpathreg commands.
Targeted repair for duplicate Windows Mixed Reality paths
If the file contains multiple MixedRealityVRDriver entries pointing to different Steam libraries, Microsoft recommends retaining the valid current path, removing the obsolete duplicate, preserving valid JSON syntax, and restarting Steam and SteamVR (Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality SteamVR troubleshooting). Use this targeted repair instead of deleting every entry when you can clearly identify the duplicate. Microsoft states that Windows Mixed Reality will stop receiving security updates, nonsecurity updates, bug fixes, technical support and online technical-content updates after November 2026; that cutoff is not yet effective in September 2026.

- Lets you wirelessly interact and play with the virtual world
- Features 24 Sensors, Multi-Function trackpad, dual-stage trigger, HD haptic feedback and a rechargeable battery
- Compatible with Vive and Vive Pro
Reconnect the headset and rebuild the play area
- Reconnect the headset’s USB and display, wired-link or wireless connection.
- Start the vendor application if required, then launch SteamVR.
- Confirm that the headset and controllers appear in the SteamVR status window.
- Open the SteamVR menu and run Room Setup.
- Choose standing or room-scale setup and recreate boundaries.
Room Setup defines the play area; it cannot correct blocked cameras, reflective surfaces, misplaced base stations, poor lighting or failing hardware.
Reintroduce add-ons one at a time
- Launch a basic SteamVR application and test display, tracking, controllers and audio.
- Install one external overlay or driver.
- Test again before adding another.
This makes it possible to identify the component that recreates the original failure.
Headset-specific considerations
Meta Quest Link or Air Link
SteamVR is separate from the Meta PC runtime, Link/Air Link service, Steam Link for Quest, USB cable and wireless network. Determine whether the headset works in the Meta application before treating the failure as a SteamVR installation problem.
Valve Index
Index failures can involve USB state, firmware, base stations, display connections or the headset itself. Reinstalling SteamVR does not replace those components.

HTC Vive
Vive’s PC software, link box and firmware are separate from SteamVR. Use the vendor’s own repair or reinstall path when that layer is failing; Valve also provides a Vive-specific support branch (Vive Setup support).
Windows Mixed Reality
WMR installs an external SteamVR driver, so stale or duplicate paths are a common special case. Follow the targeted path-file repair above rather than deleting arbitrary driver directories.
PSVR2 on PC
The PlayStation VR2 PC application, adapter software and headset drivers remain separate. Removing SteamVR does not remove or repair them.

SteamVR is missing from the Library
- Enable the Tools filter and search for “SteamVR.”
- Check every Steam library and the library-management view for an installed tool.
- Repair the Steam library if Steam cannot locate the tool; do not download a random standalone installer.
Path or Error 100-type message
Non-default Steam locations can leave an incorrect path registration. Check the SteamVR binwin64 directory for vrpathreg.exe and back up the OpenVR file before making changes. Valve’s path guidance is documented in its SteamVR troubleshooting page.

Headset is not detected
- Check the correct USB, display, link-box or wireless connection and try another appropriate USB port.
- Remove unnecessary USB devices and restart the vendor application.
- In SteamVR, open Settings → Developer (enable Developer Settings if needed), choose Remove all SteamVR USB Devices, confirm, quit SteamVR, then reconnect the hardware.
Valve documents this USB reset as a detection troubleshooting step, not a universal reinstall requirement. Devices will be detected and configured again.
Controllers or tracking are wrong
Run Room Setup, check controller pairing and firmware, and inspect base-station or camera placement. Physical occlusion, reflective objects, lighting and hardware faults are not repaired by reinstalling files.
SteamVR is slow, freezes or has low frame rates
A reinstall cannot fix an underpowered or overheating PC, GPU-driver regression, USB bandwidth limits, wireless interference, refresh-rate or resolution choices, background conflicts or hardware failure. Check the SteamVR Performance Test and open SteamVR → Settings → Performance → Display Frame Timing (Valve performance troubleshooting). Do not permanently disable security software; if a security product is suspected, perform a controlled temporary test and re-enable protection.
Create a diagnostic report
If the failure remains, open SteamVR → Settings → General → Create System Report. Include the error code, headset model, GPU, Windows version, connection method and whether the clean reinstall changed the symptom. SteamVR’s feature documentation describes the report function (SteamVR device and support information).

Final verification checklist
- SteamVR starts without the original error.
- The headset display works and the status window shows the headset.
- Controllers appear and respond.
- Audio output is correct.
- Room Setup completes and boundaries are usable.
- A basic VR application launches.
- Third-party drivers and overlays are added back individually.
Reinstalling Steam itself or Windows is a last resort for broader client or system corruption, not a first-line SteamVR fix.
