It depends on the edition. Bedrock Realms let the owner activate add-ons for a world, and joining Bedrock players automatically download and apply them. For Java Realms, Minecraft Help says, “We recommend not using any mods.” Bedrock add-ons and Java mods are different customization systems, so first check which edition your Realm uses.

These are not interchangeable terms: a Bedrock add-on is not a Java mod, and the documented Bedrock activation process is not a supported setting for installing Java server-side mods.
How to activate add-ons on a Bedrock Realm
The Realm owner can activate an add-on for a world slot, including an existing world, through the Realm’s settings:
- Open Play, then Realms.
- Select the Realm and open Settings.
- Select the world slot you want to customize, then choose Edit World.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Choose the add-on under My Packs or Marketplace Pass Packs, activate it, and confirm.
- Return to the Realm and wait for the world changes to upload.
Those menu paths and steps are documented in Minecraft Help’s Bedrock add-on instructions. Add-on availability and compatibility can depend on the add-on and game version; the instructions do not establish that every add-on works on every platform.

What happens when players join?
Minecraft Help says that Bedrock Edition devices connecting to a Realm automatically download and apply the add-ons activated on that Realm. Players therefore do not use the Java mod process to receive those Bedrock world changes. They still need to join with Bedrock Edition: Java and Bedrock Realms are edition-specific, and players must use the edition that matches the Realm. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements explain the matching-edition requirement.
What Java Realm owners should expect
Minecraft Help’s Java Realm joining guidance states: “We recommend not using any mods.” That is the official recommendation for the Java Realm experience. It does not, by itself, document a technical impossibility for every client-side modification; it also should not be read as confirmation that Java Realms support installing server-side mods through a Realm setting.

Minecraft’s Realms product page describes features including user-created content, but that broad description does not establish Java server-side mod support. For the specific question of Java mods on Realms, the Java-specific Help guidance is the more direct reference.

- Java Realm: Minecraft Help recommends against using mods.
- Bedrock Realm: The owner can activate compatible add-ons on a world slot using Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Joining a Realm: Your game edition must match the Realm’s edition. Bedrock players joining an add-on-enabled Realm automatically receive its active add-ons.
