Under the 2014 D&D rules, you can use the hand holding an arcane focus to perform Somatic components when the spell also has a Material component. If a spell has Somatic components but no Material component, you need a hand free for the gestures; holding a focus does not by itself satisfy that requirement.
When the focus hand can perform Somatic components
The 2014 Basic Rules: Spellcasting require free use of at least one hand to perform Somatic gestures. The Material-component rule makes a specific allowance: when a spell has Material components, the hand that accesses or holds the material—or an eligible spellcasting focus used in its place—can also perform the spell’s Somatic components.
That means the allowance applies to a spell with both Material (M) and Somatic (S) components. It does not make the focus hand generally “free” for every spell with gestures.
How the component combination changes the ruling
| Spell components | Can the focus hand perform S? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| M and S | Yes, if the focus is valid for the Material component. | Use the same hand to handle the focus or material and make the gestures. |
| S, with no M | No. The Material-component allowance does not apply. | Have free use of a hand for the gestures. |
The practical distinction is whether the spell actually lists a Material component, not whether you happen to be holding an object that can function as a focus.

What if you are holding a focus and a weapon?
For a spell with M and S, the hand holding the focus can perform both functions, so the weapon in your other hand does not prevent casting under this component rule. For a spell with S but no M, the focus does not count as the free hand needed for the gestures. You must free a hand—for example, by putting away the focus or weapon—if both hands are occupied.
The official Sage Advice Compendium illustrates this with a cleric carrying a shield bearing a holy symbol and a mace. The shield hand can perform the Somatic component for Aid, which has both M and S. For Cure Wounds, which has S but no M, the cleric must unequip either the shield or mace to free a hand. The example concerns a holy symbol rather than an arcane focus, but demonstrates the same M-versus-no-M distinction.

When a focus cannot replace a material component
A spellcasting focus can stand in for an eligible Material component, but not for a component that has a listed cost or one the spell consumes. In those cases, you must provide the specified component; the focus does not remove that requirement. The Material-component rules appear in the 2014 Basic Rules and the System Reference Document 5.1.

This ruling describes the 2014 fifth-edition rules. The cited Basic Rules and SRD 5.1 present that rules text. D&D’s 2024 rules are a separate rules version; check the wording in the 2024 Player’s Handbook rather than assuming that every detail or phrasing is identical. The Sage Advice Compendium is an official Wizards of the Coast clarification source, and its guidance should be applied with its stated rules context in mind.
