Yes. You can play many PS4 games without internet, including offline single-player games and disc games that do not require online services. You cannot use an offline connection for online-only games or online multiplayer, and digital games can depend on account and console activation settings.
Which PS4 games work offline?
Single-player games that do not depend on online services can be played without a persistent internet connection. Sony’s North American PS4 FAQ, published October 30, 2013, stated that a persistent connection was not required for single-player games. PlayStation’s offline-use guidance also says PS4 disc games can be played without a network, except for online-only titles.
The deciding factor is the game and mode, not just whether you own a disc. A disc does not bypass a title’s online-only requirement: if the game needs its servers or a network connection to run, it will not work offline. Check the game’s packaging or PlayStation Store listing for online-only status and mode requirements.
Can you play PS4 games offline from a disc?
Yes, if the game has an offline-capable mode. PlayStation’s PS4 setup instructions say that inserting a game disc starts installation. Select the game tile on the home screen to launch it, and keep the disc inserted while playing. A connection is not needed for an offline-capable game, but online-only titles remain an exception.

Can you play digital PS4 games offline?
Digital games are tied to the account that purchased them, so offline access can depend on the console’s activation and license state. PlayStation says a primary PS4 lets users of that console use applications purchased from PlayStation Store; an account can activate one PS4 as its primary console. See PlayStation’s primary PS4 activation guidance for the relevant Settings path and access details.
If a digital game is unavailable, first check that you are using the purchasing account and that the console is activated as that account’s primary PS4. Subscription-catalog games have an additional condition: access depends on the current subscription and whether the title remains available. PlayStation’s PlayStation Plus support page explains subscription-content access.

What changes when you want to play multiplayer?
Online multiplayer requires an internet connection. Most PS4 games also require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, but some are exempt; check the individual game’s Store listing. This is separate from offline single-player: a game may offer both, but only its offline-capable modes will work without a network.

- Disc game: Make sure the disc is inserted and the game is installed. If it is online-only, an internet connection is required regardless of the disc.
- Digital game: Confirm that the purchasing account has access and that the PS4 is activated as its primary console. For a subscription game, check that the subscription is active and the title is still available.
- Update message: Some games or content require newer PS4 system software. PlayStation warns that a disc can notify you when a later system version is required; consult its PS4 system software update guidance.
Movie discs are a separate case: Sony’s 2013 FAQ said Blu-ray and DVD playback required a one-time internet activation, while game discs did not require online authentication. That movie-playback rule should not be mistaken for a requirement to activate game discs online. Streaming apps and online services, meanwhile, depend on network access and are not offline alternatives.
