Yes—but only when the specific Apple Arcade game supports remote input. Apple says Apple TV 4K games can be played with the Siri Remote or a game controller, while also warning that some games require a controller. Check the controller indicator on each game’s page before downloading; the catalog is not universally playable with the remote.

What the Siri Remote can—and cannot—do

The Siri Remote is a valid input method for compatible Apple Arcade titles on Apple TV 4K. Apple’s Arcade overview describes playing on Apple TV 4K “using your remote or a game controller.” That wording is important: it confirms remote play, but it does not promise that every game accepts the remote.

Apple also states that “some games on Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD require a controller to play.” In other words, controller support is decided per title. A game can be designed for remote input, offer remote support as an alternative to a controller, or require a controller altogether. The Siri Remote is therefore best understood as a supported control option for part of the catalog, not as a universal replacement for a gamepad.

How to tell whether a game works with the remote

Use the game’s own product page rather than guessing from its genre, screenshots or advertised platform. Apple provides a controller indicator on each Apple Arcade game page. That indicator tells you whether a controller is optional or required.

  1. Open the Arcade app on your Apple TV 4K.
  2. Select the game you are considering.
  3. Read the controller indicator on the game’s page before downloading.
  4. If the indicator says a controller is optional, the Siri Remote is an available way to play.
  5. If the indicator says a controller is required, plan to connect a compatible controller before launching the game.

This check is the most reliable answer for an individual title because Apple says each Apple Arcade game is different. A remote-compatible game and a controller-required game can sit next to each other in the same subscription catalog.

What “optional” and “required” mean

Controller status on the game page Can you use the Siri Remote? What to do
Controller optional Yes, the game supports remote input as an alternative. Download and launch with the Siri Remote, or connect a game controller if you prefer.
Controller required No; the Siri Remote is not sufficient for that title. Use a supported Bluetooth or MFi-compatible game controller.

“Optional” does not mean that every feature feels identical with both input methods. It means Apple identifies a controller as an alternative rather than a prerequisite. The game’s controls, comfort and precision may differ depending on the input device, but the title is intended to accept the remote.

Why many Apple Arcade games still need a gamepad

Apple’s Apple TV 4K download guidance says that most games in Apple Arcade require a third-party Bluetooth game controller or another accessory sold separately. This is a catalog-level warning, not a rule that applies to every game. Some titles are built around simple directional, selection or motion-free input that the Siri Remote can provide; others need controls that Apple classifies as requiring a separate controller.

That distinction matters when deciding whether an Apple TV 4K is ready for a particular game. Having an Apple Arcade subscription and enough storage to download a title does not guarantee that the Siri Remote can operate it. The controller indicator remains the title-specific check.

Which controllers Apple lists as alternatives?

For games marked as controller-required—or for players who want a traditional gamepad—Apple lists these supported controller families:

Controller family How it fits the Apple TV Arcade setup
Sony PlayStation DualShock 4 Listed by Apple as a supported game-controller option.
Sony DualSense Listed by Apple as a supported game-controller option.
Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth Listed when using the Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller model.
Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Listed by Apple as a supported controller.
Xbox Adaptive Controllers Listed by Apple as a supported accessibility-oriented controller family.
MFi-compatible game controllers Apple’s Made for iPhone/iPad-compatible controller category; compatibility still depends on the game and Apple TV software.

The list does not mean that every controller ever sold will work. Use a controller from one of Apple’s listed families, make sure it supports the connection method required by the Apple TV, and check the individual game page. If you are buying a controller specifically for Apple TV Arcade, a Bluetooth Xbox Wireless Controller or another Apple-compatible MFi controller is a practical choice for titles that do not accept the remote; it is not necessary for every game.

Do you need an Apple Arcade subscription?

Yes. Apple TV 4K requires an Apple Arcade subscription to download Arcade games. The subscription requirement and the input requirement are separate checks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A subscription gives you access to download Apple Arcade games.
  • The controller indicator tells you whether the Siri Remote is enough for the selected game.
  • A subscription cannot make a controller-required game work with the remote.

If you can see a game but cannot download it, confirm that the Apple Arcade subscription is active. If the game downloads but does not respond to the remote, return to its product page and verify the controller status rather than repeatedly reinstalling it.

Step-by-step setup for the three common situations

1. A remote-compatible game

  1. Open the Arcade app on Apple TV 4K.
  2. Select the game and confirm that its page indicates controller support is optional.
  3. Download the game with an active Apple Arcade subscription.
  4. Launch it and use the Siri Remote for the controls the game presents.

No additional gamepad is required for the input method Apple identifies as optional.

2. A game that accepts either input method

  1. Check the page and confirm the controller is marked optional.
  2. Decide whether you want the Siri Remote or a paired supported controller.
  3. Launch the title with the chosen device connected and available.
  4. If the game presents a control-selection prompt, follow that prompt; otherwise use the active input device recognized by Apple TV.

This is the most flexible case: a controller may improve comfort or precision, but Apple does not list it as mandatory.

3. A controller-required game

  1. Read the game page and confirm that a controller is required.
  2. Use a controller from Apple’s supported families, such as a Bluetooth Xbox Wireless Controller, DualShock 4, DualSense, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, Xbox Adaptive Controller or another MFi-compatible model.
  3. Put the controller into its pairing mode and connect it through Apple TV’s Bluetooth-controller controls.
  4. Return to the Arcade app, download the game with your Apple Arcade subscription and launch it.

The Siri Remote can still navigate Apple TV menus, but it is not the gameplay device for a title Apple labels controller-required.

Troubleshooting when the remote does not work

The game opens, but button presses do nothing

First, inspect the game’s product page again. The most likely explanation is that the title requires a controller. Apple’s indicator is more authoritative than the fact that the game appears in the Arcade app or launches successfully.

The page says a controller is optional, but controls feel wrong

Confirm that the Siri Remote is the active input device and that you are using the controls shown by the game. Optional support means the title accepts the remote; it does not guarantee that every action is as comfortable or as precise as it would be on a full gamepad. If the game remains difficult to control, try one of Apple’s listed controllers.

A paired controller is not recognized

Check that the controller belongs to a family Apple lists, that it supports Bluetooth where Bluetooth is required, and that it is not still actively connected to another device. Put it back into pairing mode and reconnect it through Apple TV’s Bluetooth controls. Then reopen the game so it can detect the controller from a clean launch.

The game or feature is unavailable

Apple cautions that game availability and features vary by hardware, software, country and region. A title or input feature that appears in one location or on one Apple TV configuration may not be available in another. Verify that the Apple TV 4K is running compatible software and consider regional availability before treating the missing option as a controller problem.

Hardware, software and regional limits

“Apple TV 4K” describes a product family rather than one identical configuration worldwide. Apple expressly qualifies game availability and features by hardware, software, country and region. That qualification applies when you evaluate both the catalog and controller behavior.

  • Game metadata: The controller indicator on the title page is the relevant signal for that particular game.

Because Apple gives no universal game count or percentage for remote compatibility, it is not possible to calculate how many titles will work with the Siri Remote from the catalog-level wording alone. Check each game page instead of relying on a catalog-wide assumption.

Choosing between the Siri Remote and a controller

Your situation Best starting choice Reason
You want to try a game without buying accessories. Check for “controller optional” and use the Siri Remote. No separate gamepad is needed for that title’s supported remote mode.
The game page says a controller is required. Use an Apple-listed Bluetooth or MFi-compatible controller. The Siri Remote is not sufficient for gameplay.
You play a mixture of remote-compatible and controller-required games. Keep the Siri Remote for navigation and add one supported controller. This covers both input categories without assuming every game needs the accessory.
You need an accessibility-focused option. Consider an Xbox Adaptive Controller from Apple’s supported list, subject to the title’s requirements. Apple specifically lists the Xbox Adaptive Controllers among compatible alternatives.

Common misconceptions

“Apple Arcade on Apple TV always requires a controller.”

Not always. Apple explicitly says you can play Apple TV 4K games with the remote, and some games mark a controller as optional. The requirement is title-specific.

“If the game downloads, the Siri Remote must work.”

Download access and input support are different. Apple TV 4K needs an Apple Arcade subscription to download games, while the game page’s controller indicator determines whether the remote can play the title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A controller listed by Apple works identically in every game.”

Apple lists supported controller families, but individual games still define their own input requirements. A supported controller is the correct hardware for controller-required games; it does not change a game’s rules or guarantee that every title exposes the same controls.

A quick pre-download checklist

  • Confirm you are using an Apple TV 4K configuration and software supported for the game.
  • Make sure your Apple Arcade subscription is active.
  • Open the game’s page in the Arcade app.
  • Read the controller indicator: optional means the Siri Remote can be used; required means you need a compatible gamepad.
  • If buying hardware, choose an Apple-listed Bluetooth controller or an MFi-compatible model.
  • Remember that availability and features can vary by country or region.

The practical answer is therefore simple but not universal: start with the Siri Remote only when the game page marks controller support as optional. For a controller-required title, connect a compatible gamepad before playing.
