The requirement depends on the Assassin’s Creed game, your platform, and the store where you bought it.
For example, Ubisoft’s PC listings for the Assassin’s Creed Animus Pack and the Mirage/Valhalla bundle require both a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect. Assassin’s Creed Shadows on Steam is different: Steam includes a lightweight embedded version, so you do not download the full standalone launcher, but you must link a Ubisoft account.

Uplay is now called Ubisoft Connect
Ubisoft retired the Uplay name and replaced it with Ubisoft Connect. The current service is free and uses a Ubisoft account. On PC, Ubisoft Connect is available as a desktop application; on consoles, many Ubisoft games expose Connect features from inside the game itself.

That creates two separate questions that are often mixed together:

- Do you need to install the full Ubisoft Connect PC launcher? Some PC editions do, while certain Steam releases include a smaller embedded version instead.
Therefore, “Can I play without Uplay?” has no single yes-or-no answer for every Assassin’s Creed game. Check the exact title and storefront.

This table describes the specific cases covered by Ubisoft’s published guidance. It is not a blanket rule for every Assassin’s Creed edition, bundle, or Steam release. Store pages can change, so the current requirement shown for your exact product takes precedence.
When a Ubisoft account is required
A Ubisoft account is the identity that stores your game entitlement and associated content in Ubisoft’s systems. If a product requires account linking, owning the game on Steam, Microsoft Store, or another platform does not remove that requirement. You connect the external platform account to Ubisoft once, then use the same Ubisoft account for later launches.

For PC products whose official requirements explicitly list both items, you need the account and the launcher. The launcher is not a paid subscription: Ubisoft describes Connect as a free service. Creating an account does not by itself grant access to games; the account must be the one that activated, redeemed, or purchased the particular title.
Why the account matters even when Steam starts the game
Steam can provide the installation files and the button you click, while Ubisoft still performs an entitlement or service check. That is why Shadows on Steam can avoid a separate full launcher installation yet still require a linked Ubisoft account. The reduced installation changes how Connect is delivered, not whether Ubisoft identifies the player.
How the first launch works on common PC setups
Ubisoft-listed PC game or bundle
- Install Ubisoft Connect PC from Ubisoft’s current desktop software page.
- Sign in or create a Ubisoft account.
- Use the account that purchased, activated, or redeemed the Assassin’s Creed product.
- Install or locate the game in the launcher or the store where you acquired it.
- Start the game and allow the initial entitlement check to finish. Keep the launcher available if the title requires it at every launch.
If you sign in with a different Ubisoft account, the game may not appear in the library even though the store client shows that you own it. Do not create several accounts while troubleshooting; first identify the account used for the original activation.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows purchased on Steam
- Install Shadows through Steam as usual.
- Press Play in Steam.
- When Ubisoft’s connection screen appears, sign in to the Ubisoft account you intend to keep linked to that Steam account.
- Approve the account connection and let the embedded lite version complete its setup.
- Return to Steam for subsequent launches unless the game displays a specific Ubisoft sign-in prompt.
Ubisoft’s March 18, 2025 addendum to its Shadows technical Q&A states that Steam installs Ubisoft Connect automatically and runs it in a lite version. That statement is specific to Shadows on Steam; it should not be applied automatically to every Assassin’s Creed game sold on Steam.

Microsoft Store purchase on Windows PC
- Install the game from Microsoft Store.
- When Ubisoft Connect PC is requested, install or open it.
- Sign in with the Ubisoft account used for the Microsoft Store purchase or activation.
- Allow the account handoff to complete before launching again.
If the Microsoft account owns the game but the Ubisoft account does not show it, the usual issue is a mismatch between the Ubisoft account used during activation and the one currently open in Connect.
Console purchases are different from PC purchases
For a Ubisoft game bought through Microsoft Store on a console, Ubisoft says the title is accessed directly on the console. There is no Ubisoft Connect PC installation step because that is a Windows application. Start the game from the console library and follow any account or network prompts shown by that version.
“Directly on the console” does not mean that every feature is anonymous or permanently offline. A game may still ask you to sign in for online multiplayer, cloud saves, rewards, account-linked content, or other connected functionality. The exact prompt depends on the game and console edition.
PlayStation and Xbox storefront behavior can also differ by title and edition. If the console store page or the game’s startup screen names Ubisoft account linking, complete that step; if it does not, do not install the Windows launcher merely because an older guide calls it Uplay.

Ubisoft says Ubisoft Connect PC can start in Offline mode when an internet connection is unavailable. The same support guidance warns that some features or functionality may be affected. Offline mode is therefore a launcher behavior, not a promise that every Assassin’s Creed game will launch in every circumstance without a connection.
Several conditions can change the result:
- A first launch may need an online activation or account-linking check.
- A title may require an update before it can start.
- Online multiplayer, cloud synchronization, rewards, news, and other connected features will not work normally offline.
- A game-specific digital-rights check can impose requirements beyond the launcher’s general Offline mode.
If you plan to travel or play without reliable internet, launch the game online first, finish account linking, apply updates, and test the exact title before disconnecting. Treat the result of that test as title-specific rather than assuming all Assassin’s Creed games behave identically.

The most common cause is being signed in to the wrong Ubisoft account. Ubisoft says games and in-game content are tied to the account where they were activated or redeemed.

- Open Ubisoft Connect and sign out.
- Sign back in with the email address originally used when the game was redeemed, purchased, or linked.
- Check the library again and search for the exact game name rather than a bundle’s marketing name.
- If you started from Steam or Microsoft Store, launch from that storefront once more so the account-linking handoff can be repeated.
- Do not unlink accounts casually. A platform connection can have restrictions, and changing it may not transfer an entitlement to a different Ubisoft account.
If the title still does not appear, collect the purchase receipt, platform username, and the Ubisoft account email before contacting support. Those details let support determine whether the entitlement was redeemed on another account.

Use this checklist before installing anything:
- Identify the exact edition. A base game, deluxe edition, season pass, bundle, and add-on can have different store descriptions.
- Identify the platform. Windows PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and a cloud or streaming version may use different launch paths.
- Identify the storefront. Ubisoft’s own PC listing, Steam, Microsoft Store, and a console store are not interchangeable for support instructions.
- Read the current system-requirements or activation text. Look specifically for “Ubisoft account,” “Ubisoft Connect,” or “third-party account.”
- Separate launcher language from account language. “Account required” does not always mean that a full standalone launcher download is required.
- Check the date of the guidance. Ubisoft can change installation behavior, especially when a Steam build embeds a lite component.
For a Ubisoft-listed PC product, assume both the account and Connect PC are needed when the listing says so. For Shadows on Steam, follow the game-specific embedded-l version guidance. For any other title, verify its own current listing instead of transferring requirements from Shadows.
Common mistakes and fixes
Installing the wrong application
Searching for “Uplay” can lead to obsolete instructions or unofficial downloads. Use Ubisoft Connect, the current name, and obtain the PC application through Ubisoft’s official channel or the installer supplied by the game’s storefront.
Creating a second Ubisoft account
A new account may appear empty because the game belongs to the original account. Recover access to the account used at activation instead of repeatedly registering new addresses.
Assuming every Steam game embeds Connect
Shadows has an explicit Steam statement about a lite embedded version. That does not establish the same arrangement for every Assassin’s Creed game. Check the individual Steam listing and Ubisoft support instructions.
Assuming console access means no account ever
Console access avoids Ubisoft Connect PC, but online and account-linked functions can still request credentials. Follow the prompt shown by the console version.
Confusing offline launcher mode with guaranteed offline play
Connect PC’s Offline mode may preserve access to some installed content, but Ubisoft warns that features can be affected, and a particular game may still need a first online launch or periodic check.
Bottom line for the “Uplay” question
You do not need an application literally called Uplay; that name has been replaced by Ubisoft Connect. You often do need a Ubisoft account. Whether you must install the full Ubisoft Connect PC launcher depends on the game and storefront: Ubisoft-listed PC products such as the cited Animus Pack and Mirage/Valhalla bundle require it, while Assassin’s Creed Shadows on Steam uses a built-in lite version instead. Microsoft Store console purchases are accessed on the console, whereas Microsoft Store PC purchases use Ubisoft Connect PC. Verify the exact edition’s current requirements before assuming that another Assassin’s Creed game follows the same rule.
