Plutonium’s client is free, but it does not include Black Ops II. To play BO2 (also called T6) through Plutonium, you need a compatible copy of the original game files. Plutonium’s official guide asks you to select an existing BO2 folder, and its documentation explains that the mod uses the original files.
What is free—and what you still need
“Free” can mean two different things here: the Plutonium client/mod or the original game. Plutonium is a modification that runs on top of BO2; it is not a replacement copy of the game. The project’s game-files explanation says the original files are required for the modified version to start.
Plutonium’s forum has also stated that it removed its provided free copies of Activision games, including BO2/T6, and directs players to obtain the games themselves. That is project guidance, not a legal ruling about every way of acquiring or using game files.
Can you use a Steam copy of BO2?
Yes. Plutonium’s T6 FAQ says you can select a Steam copy of Black Ops II. It warns that some SKIDROW or NOSTEAM repacks are incompatible because their files may be outdated or incomplete. The FAQ’s guidance does not verify every possible source or version.

How to point Plutonium to your BO2 files
- Install the Plutonium launcher and sign in with a Plutonium forum account.
- Choose Black Ops 2 in the launcher and select SETUP.
- When prompted, select the folder containing the BO2 game files. For a typical Steam installation, the folder is under
SteamsteamappscommonCall of Duty Black Ops II. - If the launcher reports an invalid path, select the actual BO2 folder—the chosen folder does not contain the files Plutonium expects.
These steps follow the official Plutonium installation guide. Plutonium’s FAQ also says fully offline T6 play is not supported, so offline play does not remove the need for the original game files.
