Yes—provided you add Sony’s separately sold PlayStation 5 Disc Drive (model CFI-ZDD1). The PS5 Pro itself ships without an optical drive, so its built-in hardware cannot read any physical game or movie disc. With the compatible drive attached, it can play supported PS4 game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs.
Digital PS4 games do not need the accessory. Physical discs do, and each PS4 title still has to be supported by the PS5 system. Sony says more than 8,500 PS4 games run on PS5 Pro, while a small number of titles remain incompatible.

What you need to play discs on PS5 Pro
There are two separate questions: whether the PS5 Pro can run the software on a disc, and whether the console has hardware to read that disc. The PS5 Pro passes the software test for supported PS4 games and common movie formats, but the standard console fails the hardware test because it has no optical drive installed.
The required accessory
The compatible add-on is the PlayStation 5 Disc Drive (CFI-ZDD1). Sony sells this drive separately rather than including it with the PS5 Pro. Once physically attached and paired with the console, it provides the laser reader needed for PS5 and supported PS4 game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD playback.

What happens without the drive
A PS5 Pro without CFI-ZDD1 is a digital-only system for games and video. You can download digital PS4 games from your library or the PlayStation Store, but inserting a game or movie disc is impossible because there is no disc slot. An external USB optical drive cannot substitute for Sony’s dedicated model; the PS5 software is designed around the official PS5 Disc Drive.
Which movie discs can PS5 Pro play?
With CFI-ZDD1 installed, the PS5 Pro supports the three consumer video-disc categories Sony identifies for PS5 consoles with a Blu-ray drive.

The drive does not turn every disc format into a guaranteed playback option. Sony’s published support covers 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD video discs. The game’s own compatibility status controls whether a PS4 disc can be used.

Can PS5 Pro play your PS4 discs?
Yes, in most cases. PlayStation states that more than 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5 Pro. A physical copy is used as the licence check: leave the disc in the drive whenever you launch the installed game. The console may install or download a PS5-compatible version, but it still needs the original disc present for access.
Why “most” does not mean every title
Sony lists a small number of PS4 games that are not compatible with PS5 consoles. Compatibility can also vary by game features. Sony warns that some functionality available on PS4 may be absent when a title runs on PS5, even when the game itself launches normally. That can include features tied to older peripherals, operating modes or online services that the publisher no longer maintains.
How to check a particular disc
- Identify the exact game and edition printed on the disc and case.
- Check PlayStation’s current PS4-to-PS5 compatibility information for that title before buying a drive solely for it.
- Confirm that the disc is a genuine game disc for a supported market and that the console can connect to PlayStation Network for any required update or licence check.
- After installing the drive, insert the disc and follow the on-screen installation or update prompt.
If Sony marks a title as incompatible, adding CFI-ZDD1 will not make it playable. The accessory solves the reading problem; it does not change the game’s software compatibility.

How to add the Disc Drive and use a disc
Use the installation leaflet supplied with CFI-ZDD1 for the physical attachment steps. The exact panel-removal sequence is model-specific, so do not force a cover or use a third-party fitting guide that does not identify the PS5 Pro. The process has four practical phases.

- Verify that the label says CFI-ZDD1 and that it is the drive intended for PS5 Pro.
- Shut down the PS5 Pro completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode.
- Disconnect the AC cable and place the console on a stable, scratch-free surface.
2. Attach the drive
Remove the PS5 Pro’s designated outer cover only as shown in Sony’s instructions, align the drive with its connector and mounting points, and refit the cover. The drive should sit flush; a gap, loose fit or excessive pressure indicates that it is not aligned correctly.
3. Update and pair
Reconnect power and start the console. Sony advises using current PS5 system software. Initial pairing of the drive may require an internet connection, so connect the PS5 Pro to the internet before attempting first-time setup. Follow the pairing prompt until the console reports that the drive is ready.

4. Insert and launch
- For a movie, insert the disc with the label orientation shown in the console’s on-screen guidance.
- For a PS4 game, insert the disc, wait for the installation tile to appear, and install any offered update.
- Keep the game disc inserted whenever you play that physical copy; removing it ends the disc-based licence check.
Once pairing is complete, ordinary playback does not necessarily require an internet connection. Internet access can still be needed for system updates, game patches, account checks or online features.
Important limitations to know before buying the drive
3D stereoscopic output is not supported
Sony says PS5 does not support 3D stereoscopic output. A 3D Blu-ray that depends on stereoscopic playback therefore should not be treated as a supported 3D movie experience on PS5 Pro, even though the console reads ordinary Blu-ray discs.

PS4 features can differ on PS5
Backward compatibility targets the game software, not perfect reproduction of every PS4-era function. A supported title may run while lacking a peripheral feature, menu option or service that depended on the original PS4 environment. Read the game-specific notes if a particular feature matters to you.

A disc drive does not guarantee a game upgrade
Some publishers provide a PS5 version or upgrade path, while others do not. The PS5 Pro can run the supported PS4 release from your disc, but any next-generation version, upgrade fee or enhanced mode is controlled by the publisher and the individual game.
System software matters
Drive pairing and compatibility are handled by the PS5 operating system. Running outdated system software can prevent setup prompts from appearing or leave a game without a required compatibility fix. Update before troubleshooting the hardware.

Sony does not establish one universal price for the drive in the compatibility information. Cost and stock vary by country, retailer and date, so check the current local listing before treating the accessory as part of the console’s total cost.
Troubleshooting disc problems
The PS5 Pro does not detect the drive
- Power the console down fully and check that CFI-ZDD1 is seated flush according to Sony’s installation instructions.
- Reconnect the AC cable, start the console and install any pending system update.
- Connect to the internet and retry the first-time pairing process.
- If the drive remains absent from the system interface, remove power before reseating it; do not pull on the connector while the console is running.
A movie disc will not start
- Confirm that the disc is a supported 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray or DVD rather than a format outside Sony’s listed playback support.
- Clean visible fingerprints or dust with a soft, lint-free cloth and try again.
- Test a second known-good disc to distinguish a damaged disc from a drive or software issue.
- Install the latest system software before contacting PlayStation Support.
A PS4 game disc is rejected or will not launch
- Check the exact title against Sony’s current compatibility information; incompatible games cannot be fixed by reinstalling the drive.
- Leave the disc inserted after installation, because the physical copy supplies the licence check.
- Allow the console to download the game’s latest patch and restart after the update.
- Remember that a supported game can still omit some PS4 functionality on PS5.
Buying checklist for a physical-library owner
- Confirm the hardware: you are buying CFI-ZDD1, not a generic USB optical drive or an accessory for a different PlayStation model.
- Count your physical use cases: include PS4 game discs, 4K movies, standard Blu-rays and DVDs you actually plan to use.
- Verify game compatibility: look up important PS4 titles individually because a small number are excluded.
- Plan for setup: have internet available for possible first-use pairing and update the console before testing discs.
- Set expectations: 3D stereoscopic output is not supported, and some PS4 features may not carry over.
- Check regional availability: accessory price and stock are not fixed worldwide, so confirm current local terms before purchase.

PS5 Pro can play Blu-ray movies and PS4 discs, but only after you add Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive.
