On Xbox, buying a paid Call of Duty game does not by itself include console online multiplayer. The Microsoft Store listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare says online multiplayer on console requires an eligible Xbox Game Pass plan and that subscriptions are sold separately. Warzone is the exception: Xbox says a Game Pass Core subscription is not required to play Warzone, although other online modes still require Core. Cloud gaming follows a different rule: Activision says the linked Xbox account needs an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription for the listed Call of Duty games.
So the answer depends on what you are playing and how you are accessing it: paid console releases require the applicable online-multiplayer plan, Warzone can be played on Xbox without Core, and streaming the listed games through Xbox Cloud Gaming requires Ultimate.

The short answer: ownership and online access are separate
“Can I play Call of Duty multiplayer without Game Pass?” has two different answers on Xbox:
- Paid Call of Duty release on an Xbox console: No, not for online console multiplayer. You can own the game and still need the eligible Game Pass plan named by the current store listing. The subscription is separate from the purchase.
- Call of Duty: Warzone: Yes, for the free-to-play Warzone product. Xbox’s listing says Game Pass Core is not required for Warzone. It also says that all other online modes still require Core.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: You need an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription for the listed Call of Duty games, according to Activision Support. Cloud access is streamed access, not the same thing as owning the console game.
These rules are for the Xbox products covered by the cited listings. Requirements can change by game, Game Pass tier, region, platform and date, so check the current listing for the exact release and mode you intend to use.

Why buying Call of Duty does not automatically unlock multiplayer
The game purchase is one entitlement
A paid Call of Duty purchase gives you access to that paid release under its store and account terms. It does not remove the separate requirement for online console multiplayer. The current Microsoft Store listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare states: “Online multiplayer on console requires XBOX Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate (subscriptions sold separately).”
The important wording is “subscriptions sold separately.” In practical terms, the transaction for the game and the subscription that enables console online multiplayer are separate decisions. Owning Modern Warfare therefore does not mean that every multiplayer mode will start without an online-service subscription.
The online service is a second requirement
Xbox describes Game Pass Core as including online console multiplayer, allowing members to find and play with other people on Xbox. That describes the role of the service; it does not turn a paid Call of Duty release into a free-to-play product. You still need the game itself, plus the eligible online-multiplayer access required for the mode and listing you are using.

This distinction explains why a player can install a purchased game successfully yet receive a subscription prompt when selecting an online mode. Installation or ownership answers “Do I have the game?” The online-service requirement answers “Can this Xbox account use console multiplayer?”
Warzone is the Xbox exception
Free-to-play Warzone does not require Core
The Xbox Warzone listing makes a specific exception: “A Game Pass Core subscription is not required to play Call of Duty®: Warzone™.” That means an Xbox player who wants the free-to-play Warzone product can play it without buying the paid game and without subscribing to Game Pass Core, subject to the listing’s current platform and account requirements.
Other online modes still have a requirement
The same listing immediately limits the exception: “All other online modes still require Game Pass Core.” Do not treat the Warzone rule as a blanket exemption for Call of Duty. If you switch from Warzone to an online mode belonging to a paid Call of Duty release, the console-multiplayer requirement applies again.
For a player deciding whether to subscribe, the practical dividing line is the product being launched. Warzone is the free-to-play route for Xbox online play without Core. A paid release remains a paid game with a separate online-service requirement.

Cloud gaming has a different subscription rule
Streaming is not the same as owning the console game
Activision Support says the linked Xbox account must have an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription to play the listed Call of Duty games through Xbox Cloud Gaming. In this situation, the game is being streamed through a supported cloud-gaming setup rather than run from a purchased console installation.

That creates a third case:
- Buying a paid console game does not replace the console online-multiplayer requirement.
- Warzone can be played on Xbox without Game Pass Core under the Warzone listing’s stated exception.
- Cloud gaming for the listed Call of Duty titles requires active Ultimate on the linked Xbox account.
Do not infer cloud eligibility from console ownership. A player may own a Call of Duty release and still need Ultimate to stream it through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

The table compares ownership model, online-service requirement and access method. It does not establish a universal rule for every Call of Duty title or every platform. Use the current store or support listing for the specific game, account and region.
What to do in each common situation
If you bought Modern Warfare or another paid Call of Duty release
- Identify the exact paid release and the Xbox account that owns it.
- Open the current Microsoft Store listing and read the online-multiplayer requirement for that edition. The cited Modern Warfare listing requires an eligible Game Pass plan and says the subscription is sold separately.
- Make sure the account playing online has the required plan active. Ownership of the game alone does not satisfy this second requirement.
- Launch the paid release and select its online mode. If Xbox displays a subscription prompt, that is consistent with the listing’s separate online-service requirement rather than evidence that the game purchase failed.
This is the normal paid-game path: game entitlement plus the applicable console online-multiplayer access.

If you only want to play Warzone
- Confirm that you are launching the Warzone product, not an online mode from a paid Call of Duty release.
- Use the Xbox Warzone listing as the rule for this product. It says Game Pass Core is not required for Warzone.
- If you move into another online mode, recheck the requirement. The same listing says all other online modes still require Core.
You therefore do not need to buy a paid Call of Duty release merely to access Warzone, and the cited Xbox listing does not require Core for Warzone itself.
If you want to stream a listed Call of Duty game
- Use a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming device and sign in with the Xbox account linked to your Activision account.
- Check that the linked Xbox account has an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
- Start the listed Call of Duty title through cloud gaming rather than assuming a console purchase grants streaming access.
Activision’s requirement is account-based: Ultimate must be active on the linked Xbox account. Cloud gaming access should be evaluated separately from both console ownership and the Warzone free-to-play exception.

Core is the online-multiplayer reference in the Warzone materials
Xbox’s Game Pass Core page says Core includes online console multiplayer. The Warzone listing uses that same tier name when it says Core is not required for Warzone and that other online modes still require it.
Paid-game listings may name different eligible plans
The current Microsoft Store listing cited for Modern Warfare names “XBOX Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate.” Because the wording differs between listings, do not assume that a requirement printed for one game or date automatically applies to another. Read the exact requirement displayed for the release and region you are buying or launching.

Troubleshooting a multiplayer subscription prompt
You bought the game but cannot enter online multiplayer
First check whether you are launching a paid console mode. If so, the purchase and the online-service requirement are separate, so the prompt may be expected. Verify the active Game Pass plan on the account that is trying to play, then compare the requirement with the current store listing.
You expected Warzone to be free but see a subscription message
Check the product and mode. The Core exemption applies to Warzone as identified by Xbox; the listing still requires Core for all other online modes. Starting a paid release or selecting one of its modes will not inherit Warzone’s exception.
Cloud gaming says you are not eligible
Confirm that you are using the linked Xbox account and that Game Pass Ultimate is active. Activision’s cloud rule is not satisfied merely by owning a console copy, and it is not replaced by the Warzone console exception.

Check the country or region, the exact edition, the date of the listing and whether you are reading a console or cloud-gaming entry. Xbox and Activision describe requirements for particular products and access methods, so a different current listing may show different wording.
Does this apply outside Xbox?
The evidence cited here addresses Xbox console listings, Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It does not establish the subscription rules for PlayStation, PC storefronts or other platforms. If you are playing on another platform, use that platform’s current Call of Duty listing and online-service policy rather than transferring the Xbox rule automatically.
Even within Xbox, distinguish the product (paid Call of Duty release or Warzone), the access method (installed console game or cloud streaming) and the account’s active plan. Those three details determine which requirement applies.
A practical decision rule
- Want paid Call of Duty multiplayer on an Xbox console? Buy the game and maintain the eligible Game Pass plan shown for online console multiplayer; the purchase does not include the subscription.
- Want only Warzone on Xbox? Use the free-to-play Warzone product. Xbox says Core is not required for it, while other online modes still require Core.
- Want to stream a listed Call of Duty game? Use Xbox Cloud Gaming with an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription on the linked account.
- Unsure which rule applies? Identify the exact game, mode, platform, account and access method, then read the current listing for that combination.
Those distinctions answer the ownership question without conflating a paid game license, console multiplayer access and cloud streaming eligibility.
